Relationship Between the Stress-Coping Levels of University Students and their Probability of Committing Suicide

The relationship between the stress-coping levels of students studying at Muğla University Health School, and their likelihood of committing crime to help them cope more effectively with stress generators and the number of suicide attempts reduced was explored. Participants were 350 students studying to be nurses and health officers and they completed the information form developed by the researcher. The questionnaire consisted of a Personal Information Form, Stress-Coping Styles Scale (SCSS), and Suicide Probability Scale (SPS). A significant relationship was found to exist between gender, department at the school, class, education level of the mother, existence of a person among the family members with a suicidal history, place of residence in Muğla, sources of stress, level of satisfaction about the students' department, and stress-coping levels and probability of committing suicide.

The relationship between both the quantity and perceived quality of social support and suicidal risk was examined in a sample of 50 adolescents whose ages ranged from 16 to 20 years. A multiple regression analysis was performed, using scores from Cull and Gill's 1983 Suicide Probability Scale as the criterion measure along with the predictor variables of quantity and quality of experienced social support as measured by the 1983 Social Support Questionnaire of Sarason, Levine, Basham, and Sarason. Analysis showed the social support variables accounted for over 52% of the variance in suicide potential. The greatest proportion of the variance in suicide risk was attributable to the quality of the perceived social support. Adolescents at greater risk for suicide were significantly less satisfied with the quality of their social support.

The article aims at describing the relationship between the educational activity of the elderly and a more optimal way of experiencing their aging. That link can be justified by a higher measure of the overall level of satisfaction with their lives. The purpose of the study described in the paper was an in-depth analysis of the components of life satisfaction among actively learning seniors. A questionnaire survey was conducted with the voluntary participation of 405 third age university students (U3A). The authors collected data on the critical areas comprising individual well-being, illustrating the diversity in the experience of old age among active mature learners. Only 6.8% of the U3A learners are not satisfied with their life achievements. The study revealed that seniors with four or more children were most pleased, suggesting that self-actualization in the family and educational domains need not be competitive. The analysis of the health component of life satisfaction showed a clear overrepresentation of seniors with the good psychophysical condition. In general, successful ratings of the component measures of life satisfaction among the members of the researched group predominate.

Introduction: Couples struggling with infertility, as well as those after experiencing a miscarriage, deal with many types of stressors, in the face of which they react with anxiety, regret and depression, which negatively affects fertility and is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. The use of different coping strategies seems to have different effects on the stress of infertility and miscarriage experiences. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between depression related to infertility and miscarriage and satisfaction with family life, as well as the role of using the reframing in predicting family life satisfaction in the group of depressive infertile couples and after miscarriage. Methods: The study involved 90 couples: 50 couples after miscarriage and 40 couples diagnosed with infertility. The participants completed a questionnaire examining the level of depressiveness (Giessen Test), coping strategies in the family (F-copes) and the family assessment scale (Flexibility and Cohesion Evaluation Scales; SOR). The actor partner interdependence model was used for data analysis. Results: The findings showed that the level of partner depressiveness in both infertile and post-miscarriage couples predicted lower satisfaction with family life in women and men, while husband depressiveness was significant for women's family life satisfaction, but not the other way around. The reframing strategy by partners in both studied groups significantly weakened the relationship between partners’ depressiveness and the level of satisfaction with life. Conclusions: Stress is one of the most important risk factors influencing the results of infertility treatment and spontaneous miscarriage, therefore it is important to identify all factors related to depression symptoms and life satisfaction of infertile and post-miscarriage couples.

<p>The study aims at examining whether life satisfaction of pregnant women is predicted by their stress coping styles, being understood/not understood by their husbands, and intentional/unintentional conception. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 260 pregnant women living in two districts of Province Samsun who had self-reportedly no psychiatric problems. Data collection tools used in the study include a personal information form to determine sociodemographic characteristics of pregnant women, the Ways of Coping Questionnaire to determine stress coping styles, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale to determine level of life satisfaction. As the assumption of normality was not met (p&lt;0.05), the use of non-parametric tests was considered necessary; and thus the study used Spearman's rank correlation coefficient to find the relationship between two variables, and the Mann–Whitney U test to test whether there is a significant difference between two variables. A significant negative correlation was found between life satisfaction and submissive and helpless coping styles which are the subscales of the Satisfaction with Life Scale. The study found that life satisfaction of pregnant women was predicted by their stress coping styles, being understood/not understood by their husbands, and intentional/unintentional conception.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Özet</strong></p><p>Bu araştırmanın amacı gebelerin stresle baş etme tarzlarının, eşleri tarafından anlaşılma /anlaşılmama ve isteyerek gebe kalma/kalmama gibi durumların yaşam doyumlarını ne ölçüde yordadığını belirlemektir. Araştırma kesitsel tipte tarama modelinde desenlenmiştir. Araştırmanın verileri Samsun ilinin iki ilçesinde yaşayan, kendi ifadesine göre herhangi bir psikiyatrik sorunu olmayan 260 gebeden toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde tanımlayıcı istatistiksel yöntemler kullanılmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde (p&lt;0.05) normallik şartı sağlanmadığı için parametrik olmayan testlerden; iki değişken arasındaki ilişkiyi bulabilmek için Spearman Brown Sıra Farkları korelasyon testi ve iki durum arasında anlamlı fark olup olmadığını test etmek için de Mann-Whitney U testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre, stresle başa çıkma tarzları ölçeğinin alt boyutlarından çaresiz yaklaşım ve boyun eğici yaklaşım ile yaşam doyumu arasında negatif yönde anlamlı düzeyde yordamaktadır. Araştırma bulguları ilgili literatür eşliğinde tartışılmış ve daha sonra gerçekleştirilecek araştırmalara yönelik öneriler geliştirilmiştir.</p>

Aim: With this study, it is aimed to examine the nomophobia, coping with stress and anger expression styles of university students. Methods: A total of 532 university students (n=201 female; n=331 male) participated in the study. While the personal information form created by the researcher was used for socio-demographic data, the nomophobia scale developed by Yıldırım and Correia (2015) and adapted into Turkish by Yıldırım et al. (2016) for smartphone addiction, Anger Expression Style Scale, developed by Spielberger et al. (1983) and adapted to Turkish by Özer (1994), was used to determine anger expression styles, and the "Stress Coping Style Scale", which was developed by Folkman and Lazarus (1980) and adapted into Turkish by Şahin and Durak (1995), was used to determine stress coping styles. The homogeneity and variances of the data were tested, Independent Samples t Test was used for pairwise comparisons, One Way Anova was used for multiple comparisons, and Tukey HSD test was used to determine the source of difference. Results: While no statistical change was observed in the dimensions of coping with anger and stress depending on the gender factor, it was determined that the mean value of males was statistically higher than that of females in all nomophobia dimensions (p<0.05). There was no statistical change in the values of anger, nomophobia and coping with stress depending on the age and accommodation factors of the students. Conclusion: Today, the fact that female and male are closer to each other in respect of social status and social roles can be seen as the reason for the similarity in the values of anger expression and coping with stress. Results related to high nomophobia of males values can be evaluated as they are more addicted to smartphones than females. Keywords: Nomophobia, University Student, Stress, Anger

Objective: It is aimed to examine the anxiety levels and stress coping styles of individuals in the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 503 individuals, from 24 March to 25 April 2020. Data were collected online using Personal Information Form, State-Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI) and Stress Coping Styles Scale (SCSS). Descriptive and parametric tests were used to analyze the data. Results: Of the participants 72.4% were women and 56.9% were between the ages of 18-28. In the early period of COVID-19, 30.2% of the participants stated that they felt depressive and 30.4% felt anxious emotions. In addition, 57.7% of the participants went out of the house to shop. While the STAI mean scores of women were significantly higher than men, the SCSS Self-Confident approach and Optimistic approach subscale scores were found to be significantly lower. As there was a negative relationship between STAI and the Self-confident approach, Optimistic approach and Seeking social support subscales of SCSS, it was found that there was a positive relationship between the Desperate approach and Submissive approach subscales. Conclusion: It can be said that individuals experience depressive and anxious emotions, women experience more anxiety, and men use self-confident and optimistic approach-type coping styles more than women. In addition, in case of an epidemic, it was observed that individuals use desperate and submissive coping styles as their anxiety levels increase.

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the demographic characteristics and the language development of children. In the research, a "Personal Information Form" consisting of 14 items containing information about the demographic structure of the family was used and a "Language Development Checklist" consisting of 25 items that the students are required to possess the language skills in the learning process was used. The sample of the study consists of 147 children who are studying in Ağrı province center determined by purposeful sampling method. Descriptive statistics, t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test of multiple comparison tests were used for the analysis of data in the study. As a result of the research, it was determined that there is a direct relationship between the demographic characteristics of the family and the language development of the children. The increase in the level of income and the level of educational background of the parents has influenced the language development of the child; besides, families with democratic attitude have been found to be more successful in terms of children's language development.
