The lesson plan plays an important role in the achievement of learning objectives. This paper aimed to describe the effect of lesson plan role play on changes in teacher understanding regarding the process of mathematics lesson plan writing using the ELPSA framework. The method used was descriptive qualitative. 13 West Nusa Tenggara math teachers were involved through filling out questionnaires about the lesson plan writing habits among teachers, the usefulness of role-playing, and the impact on the lesson plan improvement process they designed. Results showed that the lesson plan role play was able to change the teacher's understanding, particularly on the importance of clear and communicative lesson designs as well as the sequential and anticipatory learning scenarios included. This change in teachers' understanding also has an impact on the awareness of teachers to improve their draft lesson plan in terms of integrated learning indicators, sequentialness, and the content quality of learning activities and clarity of teaching notes that allow the lesson plan to be more explicit and applicable. Overall, it can be concluded that more than 95% of the teacher respondents stated that role play had a positive influence in the form of a willingness to re-reflect and reconstruct each lesson plan. In general, they gain knowledge and awareness about how to build a good lesson plans so that they have the potential to create activities and an atmosphere of teaching and learning that are interactive, focused, and pay attention to what students already know.

This is a review of an action research project dealing with the impact of a role playing activity in an online course. Two instructors of an online graduate course collected observable data based on response and participation levels of students in an online discussion setting. Subsequently, utilizing the same discussion topic, the instructors combined for a course delivery team teaching and role playing approach to the discussion. In the second course the instructors assumed the roles of John Dewey, Mao Tse-Tung, and Aristotle and exchanged responses and comments with each other and with students. A comparison of the levels of responses between the two approaches utilizing the same rubric allowed to measure the impact of role play and team teaching. A review of research related to team teaching and role playing as approaches to enhance discussions provides background to decision to utilize these two approaches to enhance the discussion process.

Teachers in general and language teachers in particular are expected to assess various aspects of their teaching and learning. To achieve this, they are believed to familiar with different dimensions of assessment in general and classroom assessment in particular. Language   teaching and assessment are two interrelated notions that affect each other to a great extent.  Undoubtedly, language assessment is one of the most significant and complicated activities in the field of    language teaching. The present study investigated assessment related perception and practices of Iranian EFL teachers. As assessment literacy questionnaire was distributed to 30 Iranian EFL teachers who were selected from two branches of private language institute, three teachers with high assessment literacy knowledge and three teachers with relatively low assessment literacy based on result of assessment literacy questionnaire were interviewed.  The result of both qualitative and quantitative data indicated that EFL teachers` assessment literacy has meaningful and significant impact on Assessment efficiency   in classroom. Teachers with high assessment literacy have a structured lesson plan and also know their learners` strengths and weaknesses clearly. This study suggest language policy makers to motivate language teachers to be assessment literate.

Purpose Beatrix Potter and Her Paint Box (McPhail, 2015) is a tranquil biography primarily focusing on the childhood of Beatrix Potter. This lesson plan, based in the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) C3 Framework, allows second-grade learners to explore the life of Beatrix Potter through this biography and to make connections to his or her own life. Learners move through four stages of inquiry in the C3 Framework. They examine the dust jacket and dual-image book cover for clues about the life of Beatrix Potter. Next, they engage in a read-aloud of the biography during which learners construct knowledge about the life of Beatrix Potter. Learners then create puppets and role play the life of Ms Potter. The lesson concludes with learners making comparisons between their own and Ms Potter’s life. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This is a lesson plan that is intended for second grade students. The duration of the lesson is approximately 90 minutes in length. The lesson utilizes the Whole Book Approach (WBA). The WBA is “an intentional, inquiry-based approach to reading aloud that puts art and design [and children’s responses to them] at the center of the storytime experience” (Lambert et al., 2015, p. 81). During the lesson, the teacher utilizes the WBA through asking open-ended questions as she/he reads aloud. The students and the teacher co-construct meaning through a dialogue about the text and images within the text. The lesson also includes the Role-Playing Characters to Understand Them Better (adapted) approach. This fiction reading strategy is adapted for informational text, a biography, for this lesson. Rather than role-playing a character, students role-play real people: Beatrix Potter & her family, and themselves. Serravallo (2015) writes about this strategy, “Sometimes the best way to get to know our characters is to stand in their shoes-to do what they do, say what they say, and act how they act. With a partner[…] Using puppets or props, act out the scene. Try to talk in the voice of the character, and move the puppet just like the character would. When you finish creating the scene, stop and talk about what you think about the characters” (p. 172). Students will create paper puppets and role-play events from Beatrix Potter’s life as depicted in the biography. Students use a puppet of themselves to talk with Beatrix about how the student's life is similar to and different from Beatrix’s life. McPhail, D. (2015), Beatrix Potter and Her Paint Box, New York, Henry Holt and Co.; National Council for the Social Studies Notable Trade Book for Young People (2016); JLG Category – Genre: Nonfiction, Lexile Level: AD790L, Elementary Grades K-2, ISBN: 9780805091700 (Junior Library Guild, 2016); the duration of the lesson is approximately 90 minutes: second grade. Findings Little Beatrix Potter loved art. At an early age, she received her mother’s paint box. Beatrix Potter spent hours painting things she loved, like the animals she kept as pets. Her family traveled from their home in London to spend Summers in the country. She loved it there. She spent her time painting her surroundings. When she was older she learned of a young boy who was ill, and confined to bed. So, she wrote him a story and drew illustrations for the story. This story was later published as her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Beatrix Potter went on to publish many other animal tales that became popular across the world and beloved for generations. Originality/value This lesson plan is aligned with the NCSS theme number 10, individual development and identity.

The Simulations and Role Play I track examined a broad range of approaches to classroom simulations and role-playing exercises. The presentations covered designs that operate online and face-to-face, model decision making at local and international levels, and run from only a few minutes to an entire semester. Participants and discussants identified several elements that are common to successful simulations. These elements included establishing clear objectives for a simulation prior to its use in a course, designing simulations to actively engage students in the learning process, and using simulations to develop professional skills, empathy, and intercultural understanding among students. The track members agreed that simulations need not be time intensive in preparation or presentation, but can be flexible and made to fit unique situations. Finally, while simulations may not increase student perceptions of the quality of instruction, the simulations do seem to increase student empathy and student decision-making skills, which are worthwhile achievements.
