Thus, the relevance of scientific understanding and analysis of career guidance activities carried out in modern times is manifested.Theaimof the publication was the study of modern vocational guidance practices present and prevailing in the educational system of the Russian Federation, taking into account world experience.Methodology and research methods. At the theoretical stage, the review and generalisation of scientific publications relevant to the stated theme and objectives of the research were carried out. To study career guidance practices, a questionnaire survey intended for high school students (1087 students of secondary rural, municipal and elite schools) of the Tyumen region was conducted. A selective secondary analysis of sociological studies published by the Russian and foreign scholars was undertaken. Results and scientific novelty. Global trends in career guidance were designated; real examples of the positive experience accumulated by other countries in this sphere were reviewed. The most burning issues of the implementation of career guidance activity in the Russian education system were identified. On the basis of sociological survey, the leading motives of professional choice by high school students were established. It was determined that those motives vary according to a status, a type and a territory of educational institution in which students study. The differences in students’ degree of satisfaction with career guidance actions were shown. The authors conclude that to avoid labour market distortions and many other social problems, it is necessary to concentrate the center of gravity of career guidance work on the general education; therefore, during this period the foundation for professional self-determination of a person is provided. It is necessary to shift the vector of implementation of career guidance practices in the system of general education with the identification of students’ capabilities and predispositions, to inform and to involve them in the world of professions (e.g. employment practices, meetings with representatives of different specialties and employers, as well as other forms and types of career guidance both inside and outside school). The development of students’ professional identity is one of the main goals of their education at the senior level of basic general secondary education. Achievement of this goal will largely help school students to make a choice of a direction of training or specialty at a university for higher education and upon completion of professional activity. In this case, in the context of specialized education at school, elective language courses aimed at immersion in the world of future professions by means of the studied language can play a special role. Content and language integrated learning is one of the innovative approaches for the domestic education system, which consists in the simultaneous study of a foreign language by students and mastering a specialized discipline or specialty. Elective language CLIL-courses, built on the model of integrated learning, are able to create didactic conditions for the simultaneous achievement of three learning goals: a) mastering by students of a foreign language; b) mastering the profile discipline by students; c) creating conditions for the professional self-determination of school students and their career guidance. We consider: a) the linguodidactic potential of language elective courses; b) describe the linguodidactic capabilities of content and language integrated learning; c) define and substantiate the key characteristics of an elective CLIL language course. These characteristics include: 1) a three-aspect learning goal; 2) CLIL-course should include thematic modules, revealing the features of one or different professions; 3) the system of problematic tasks and cases of a professional orientation should act as the methodological dominant of the CLIL course; 4) the use of a cluster approach to organizing and conducting a CLIL course; 5) teaching tandem in teaching CLIL-course. Professional self-determination of young people is a controversial process complicated by the need to choose the field of activity and determine their place in life. Taking into account the complex influence of all factors on the professional orientation of young people is considered a reliable guarantee of the young person's choice of profession as part of life self-determination. However, it cannot be assumed that this process does not need management and practical support, and it can be carried out in a self-adjusting way. In addition, when choosing a profession, young people often rely on external attributes (publicity, showiness, prestige of the profession within the immediate circles) which gives rise to a corresponding interest in its development. Sometimes they do not take into account their correspondence to the requirements of the particular professional field: personal traits representing the importance of a professional, intellectual level of development, or the physiological capabilities necessary for the implementation of this professional activity. Increased attention is aimed at development of the natural instincts of the younger generation, as well as their professional formation, that is, on organizing assistance to young people in the choice of employment. At the same time, the choice should be made not only with a focus on the needs and opportunities of young people themselves, but also taking into account the labor market situation in the conditions of continuous updating of the list of popular professions. Willingness to respond quickly to market demands is the most approved approach to choosing a profession in modern conditions. Timely and qualified assistance in professional orientation would help young people meet the highest need: the need for self-realization.
