The article deals with the relevance of studying the phenomenon of motherhood in modern society in various aspects. It is assumed that the features of the level of psycho-emotional tension can be considered as an indicator of the actual functional state in women during pregnancy. The presence of two competing dominant foci in the perinatal period, represented as: motherhood and career, motherhood and independence, motherhood and life support of the family, motherhood and selfdevelopment, lead to the development of intrapersonal conflict. Resolution of intrapersonal conflict leads to an increase in psycho-emotional tension. Quantitative determination of the vegetative coefficient and the total deviation from the autogenic norm allows you to identify the level of psycho-emotional tension. Significant differences in the severity of the vegetative coefficient and the total deviation from the autogenic norm in women who consciously refused medical support during the period of pregnancy are described.

Background: The Rotonda’s Red Eggplant belongs to the family of Solanum aethiopicum and it is cultivated in a specific area of Potenza (Basilicata, South of Italy) including villages of Rotonda, Viggianello, Castelluccio Superiore and Castelluccio Inferiore. The Red Eggplant cultivated in this area has gained the PDO, “Protected Designation of Origin”. Objective: The aim of this research was to evaluate the use of PDO Rotonda’s Red Eggplant extract as a possible nutraceutical supplement. The antioxidant, antihypertensive, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic properties were in vitro evaluated. Methods: The antioxidant activity was investigated by evaluating the scavenging properties against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals and by performing the Ammonium Molybdate and Folin-Ciocalteu assay. The hypoglycemic and antihypertensive activity was studied by evaluating the α-Amylase, α-Glucosidase and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme, respectively, inhibiting activity. In order to evaluate the hypolipidemic activity, the pancreatic lipase inhibiting property was determined and Oil Red O staining assay was performed. Finally, to evaluate the possible use of this extract as a minerals supplement, Selenium, Potassium and Chrome bioaccessibility was studied. Results: The obtained results underline the good antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antihypertensive and hypolipidemic in vitro properties of the PDO Rotonda’s Red Eggplant extract. Moreover, the obtained data show a higher minerals bioaccessibility and this higher value could be ascribable to the natural phytocomplex of PDO Rotonda’s Red Eggplant, which increases the minerals bioaccessibility if compare it with a control sample. Conclusion: The obtained results show that PDO Rotonda’s Red Eggplant extract, might be used as a possible nutraceutical supplement, along with traditional therapies, both for its biological properties and for its minerals bioaccessibility value.

Lithium is a critical element for the modern society due to its uses in various industrial sectors. Despite its unequal distribution in the environment, Li occurrence in Romania was scarcely studied. In this study a versatile measurement method using ICP-MS technique was optimized for the determination of Li from various matrixes. Water, soil, and plant samples were collected from two important karst areas in the Dobrogea and Banat regions, Romania. The Li content was analyzed together with other macro- and microelement contents to find the relationship between the concentration of elements and their effect on the plants’ Li uptake. In Dobrogea region, half of the studied waters had high Li concentration, ranging between 3.00 and 12.2 μg/L in the case of water and between 0.88 and 11.1 mg/kg DW in the case of plants, while the Li content in the soil samples were slightly comparable (from 9.85 to 11.3 mg/kg DW). In the Banat region, the concentration of Li was lower than in Dobrogea (1.40–1.46 μg/L in water, 6.50–9.12 mg/kg DW in soil, and 0.19–0.45 mg/kg DW in plants). Despite the high Li contents in soil, the Li was mostly unavailable for plants uptake and bioaccumulation.

To understand the diversity of scorpion venom, RNA from venomous glands from a sawfinger scorpion, Serradigitus gertschi, of the family Vaejovidae, was extracted and used for transcriptomic analysis. A total of 84,835 transcripts were assembled after Illumina sequencing. From those, 119 transcripts were annotated and found to putatively code for peptides or proteins that share sequence similarities with the previously reported venom components of other species. In accordance with sequence similarity, the transcripts were classified as potentially coding for 37 ion channel toxins; 17 host defense peptides; 28 enzymes, including phospholipases, hyaluronidases, metalloproteases, and serine proteases; nine protease inhibitor-like peptides; 10 peptides of the cysteine-rich secretory proteins, antigen 5, and pathogenesis-related 1 protein superfamily; seven La1-like peptides; and 11 sequences classified as “other venom components”. A mass fingerprint performed by mass spectrometry identified 204 components with molecular masses varying from 444.26 Da to 12,432.80 Da, plus several higher molecular weight proteins whose precise masses were not determined. The LC-MS/MS analysis of a tryptic digestion of the soluble venom resulted in the de novo determination of 16,840 peptide sequences, 24 of which matched sequences predicted from the translated transcriptome. The database presented here increases our general knowledge of the biodiversity of venom components from neglected non-buthid scorpions.

Abstract Objectives Curcumin belongs to the family of curcuminoids, natural polyphenolic compounds that possesses neuroprotective properties, anti inflammatory and anticancer. Its entrapment in the developed casein-based micellar powder (CMP) and poloxamer-based micellar powder (PMP) was to enhance the solubility and improve the bioavailability. Henceforth, the present study aimed to acquire an efficient analytical method for the curcumin analysis in polymeric micellar formulations. Methods A fast and specific HPLC method was developed for analyzing curcumin in two different micellar matrices using casein and poloxamer. The HPLC was equipped with a C18 column (250 × 4 mm, 5 µm) and diode array detector. A designated isocratic elution of curcumin was employed using mobile phase with a composition of water (1%, v/v acetic acid) and acetonitrile in a ratio of 50:50 v/v. The employed flow rate was 1.0 mL/min and the analyte was examined at 421 nm. Results An effective analysis in HPLC was successfully achieved by the predetermined HPLC condition. A good resolution of peaks at the employed flow rate was achieved. The linearity was excellent in two different range of concentrations, 2–20 and 10–50 μg/mL. The selectivity, accuracy and precision fulfilled the acceptable requirements. Conclusions The developed method was practically effective to qualitatively identified curcumin. In addition, the assay also effectively quantified the amount of curcumin in the polymeric entrapping matrices which demonstrates that it has great potential to be used in natural compound analysis.

The newborn whose genitalia are ambiguous presents a challenge to the pediatrician and the family. A clear understanding of the basis of sex differentiation and timely consultation with a pediatric endocrinologist is critical in the evaluation and determination of sex of rearing in a newborn who has ambiguous genitalia. Sex karyotype and a 17-OHP level may suffice in the initial evaluation of female pseudohermaphroditism because most patients will have virilizing CAH. If male pseudohermaphroditism is suspected on the basis of palpable gonads, we routinely obtain a karyotype, basal adrenal steroid levels, and levels of hCG-stimulated serum testosterone and DHT, then consider a testosterone treatment trial. Physicians who care for children who have ambiguous genitalia must appreciate the family's cultural, religious, and psychological needs and avoid determining sex of rearing before accurate diagnosis is reached.
