Fungicidal activity of garlic (Allium sativum) bulbs extracts against plants phatogenic fungi. Garlic (Allium sativum Linn) has been known to containing organosulphur compounds. These compounds are convinced to possess antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activities. The aim of this study is to determine fungicidal activity of garlic bulb extracts against some plants phatogenic fungi. The paper disc agar difussion technique was used to determine fungicidal activity of garlic bulbs extracts. The results showed that in general garlic bulbs extracts provides fungicidal activities. Calculated EC50 values indicated that ethyl acetate garlic bulbs extract was most active against Colletotrichum capsici, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.capsici, and Sclerotium rolfsi by EC50 values of 48,6; 50,3; and 51.3% respectively. Meanwhile methanolic garlic bulbs extract was the most active against Sclerotium rolfsi with EC50 values of 24,3%.

Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) has been known as traditional medicine. Shallot which has same genus with garlic(Allium sativum L.) contains allicin that is also found in garlic and has been suspected has fungicidal activity toCandida albicans. It is supported by several researches. Therefore, shallot is suspected has antifungal activity too.The aim of this research was to know antifungal activity of shallot’s water extortion againsts Candida albicans invitro. This was a laboratory experimental research which used completely randomized design, with diffusion method.Shallot’s water extortion was devided into three concentrations, there were 50%, 100% and 200%. Ketoconazole 2%was positive control and aquadest was negative control. The result of this research based on analysis of varians(Anova), there was significant difference between several treatments and was confirmed with Duncan New MultipleRange Test (DNMRT) p<0,05, there was significant difference between 100% shallot’s water extortion with othertreatments, but there was no significant difference between 50% shallot’s water extortion with 200% shallot’s. Theconclusion was shallot’s water extortion had antifungal activity againsts Candida albicans with the best concentration100%, but it was lower than ketoconazole 2%.

Antioxidant activities of wampee peel extracts using five different solvents (ethanol, hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water) were determined by using in-vitro antioxidant models including total antioxidant capability, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and superoxide scavenging activity. Ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other fractions, even higher than synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT). In addition, the EAF exhibited strong anticancer activities against human gastric carcinoma (SGC-7901), human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HepG-2) and human lung adenocarcinoma (A-549) cancer cell lines, higher than cisplatin, a conventional anticancer drug. The total phenolic content of wampee fraction was positively correlated with the antioxidant activity. This is the first report on the antioxidant and anticancer activities of the wampee peel extract. Thus, wampee peel can be used potentially as a readily accessible source of natural antioxidants and a possible pharmaceutical supplement.

Seeds of rice were treated with Garlic (Allium sativum) clove extract @ 1:0, 1:1, 1:2 dilutions in water, allamanda (Allamanda cathartica) leaf extract @ 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 dilutions in water and Provax-200 @ 0.3% for controlling seed borne fungi, where the seed samples of three rice varieties viz. Katharee, Gutee Aus and Kalijira were collected from farmer’s storages of Bangladesh. The seed germination under control ranged from 64 to 77%, where treatments resulted up to 100% germination. The identified seed borne fungi of rice were Bipolaris oryzae, Curvularia oryzae, Fusarium oxysporum, F. moniliforme, Nigrospora oryzae, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium sp., where prevalence of Bipolaris oryzae (7.5%) and Fusarium moniliforme (8.3%) were the maximum. All the treatments significantly reduced the seed borne fungi up to 100% over the control, where Provax was found best and was statically similar to garlic (1:1) extract against seed borne pathogen of rice.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/agric.v10i1.11064The Agriculturists 2012; 10(1): 46-50

Ajoene, a compound derived from garlic (Allium sativum L.), inhibited spore germination of some fungi, namely, Alternaria solani, Alternaria tenuissima, Alternaria triticina, Alternaria sp., Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Fusarium lini, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium semitectum, and Fusarium udum, which cause serious diseases in some important crop plants in India. The compound was very effective in checking spore germination at a concentration of 25 μg/mL in some of the above fungi and, in most cases, there was 100% inhibition of germination at 100 μg/mL. It is quite likely that the compound may be useful in controlling disease(s) under field conditions.

Many herbs possess antioxidant ingredients that provide efficacy by additive or synergistic activities.Allium sativumL. is a strong astringent, used for the treatment of liver and spleen diseases, rheumatism and tumors. The antioxidant activities of different concentrations of ethanolic extracts of garlic bulb of three varieties were determined by the four assaysi.e. DPPH radical scavenging assay, reducing power ability, hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay and total antioxidant capacity. Due to its natural origin and potent free-radical scavenging ability,Allium sativumL. could be used as a potential preventive intervention for free radical-mediated diseases.

The study evaluates the antioxidant, antibacterial and anticancer activities of different extracts of Menthapiperitaleaves against the MCF-7 cell line. The leaves of Menthapiperitawere extracted with aqueous, ethyl acetate, and chloroform. These extracts were subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening, antibacterial activity, cytotoxic activity, and AO/ErBr assay for cells' apoptotic effect against the MCF-7 cell line. Qualitative analysis of the leaves' different extracts revealed glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, tannin, and saponin. The antibacterial activity of the leaf extracts was examined against four different bacterial species (Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonasfluorescens, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Klebsiella pneumoniae). The aqueous extract exhibited a high level of antibacterial activity (18.66mm ±1.1 in Bacillus cereus).Free‑radicalscavenging activity of chloroform extractof M. piperita leaves was found to be more than aqueous and ethyl acetate extracts. Further, aqueous, ethyl acetate,and chloroform extracts exerted a cytotoxic effect with the IC50value of 45±1.5μg/ml, 29±1.2μg/ml, and 24±1.0μg/ml, respectively.From this study, we have observed that chloroform extract showed a concentration-dependent apoptotic effect against MCF-7 cellsdetermined by AO/EtBr assay.The resultsfurther depicted that the selected traditionalMentha piperita could be used as a potential anticancer, antibacterial, and good antioxidant agent against the MCF-7 cell line.

An experiment was conducted with 24 buck and 24 doe rabbits of about 5-8 months. The animals were fed diets containing garlic flour meal to determine the effect on the hormonal profile and reproductive performance of the rabbits. The 48 rabbits were separated according to their sexes (buck and doe) and divided into four treatment groups with four rabbits consequently replicated three times in a completely randomized design. Dietary levels of 0.0, 5.0, 10.0 and 15.0% of garlic flour meal were used to formulate the diet for rabbits. At the end of this trial, different parameters on hormonal profile and reproductive performance were determined. All the parameters of hormonal profile were significantly P<0.05) different thereby maintaining similar values except luteinizing hormone which had slight value fluctuation. The highest value of testosterone and progesterone were recorded in the diet containing 15.0% garlic flour meal. Similarly, the parameters on reproductive performance exhibited significant (P<0.05) difference. Partum weight and litter weight at birth showed a higher value as garlic meal was increased. The results of this study indicated that 15.0% dietary level of garlic flour meal proved acceptable for hormonal profile and reproductive performance of rabbit.

Allium sativum, commonly known as ‘garlic’ has long been used as an antibacterial agent that can actually inhibits growth of infectious agents and at the same time protect the body from the pathogens. This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity of soap from garlic extract using the paper-disc method and Kirby-Bauer antibacterial sensitivity test against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and to determine the physical properties of garlic soap and the presence of saponin through phytochemical screening. Garlic soap showed antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Mean zone of inhibition was numerically higher in plate extract obtained using garlic soap (14.70mm-18mm), compared to commercial soap. Result of phytochemical screening showed the extract from garlic contains saponin, which is an important ingredient for making soap. Physical properties showed unpleasant odor, dirty white color, smooth texture and pH range of 6.5-7.5. Further studies to determine the potential of garlic soap in the other strains of bacteria.
