The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different prey concentrations (50; 100; 150 and 200 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1) and salinized water (0; 1 and 2 g L-1) on larviculture of Pyrrhulina brevis, an Amazonian ornamental fish. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 4x3 factorial design, with three replicates. A total of 360 post-larvae were randomly distributed in 36 aquariums (1L), to 10 post-larvae L-1. At the end of the experimental period (15 days) the post-larvae were measured, weighed and counted. No interaction was identified between the prey concentrations and salinized water for all evaluated parameters. The best growth results, both for length and weight, were observed in the post-larvae that received 150 and 200 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1, while the lower survival rate was observed in post-larvae fed 50 and 100 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1. The final length and length gain were higher when the post-larvae were reared in salinized water at 1 and 2 g L-1, while the final weight, weight gain and specific growth rate were higher in post-larvae submitted to 1 g L-1 of salinized water. The uniformity of the batch for weight and length of the fish showed no significant difference, independent of the prey concentrations and salinized water used. Thus, the supply of 150 artemia nauplii post-larvae-1 day-1 in salinized water at 1 g L-1 is recommended during the first fed of Pyrrhulina brevis.

Guppy fish Poecilia reticulata is one of the most popular freshwater ornamental fish species because it is easy to main-tain, and has beautiful variations of color, especially males. One method to produce male guppy is masculinization me-thod. This study aimed to determine the dose of hormone treatment from visceral organ of sea cucumber to the process masculinization of fish guppy. This study used a completely randomized design with the immersion treatment of parent guppy which has been bred into the extract solution of sea cucumber innards for 24 hours with different doses i.e. 0 mg L-1, 10 mg L-1, 20 mg L-1, 30 mg L-1 and 22 mg L-1 (metiltestosterone as positive control). The parameter measured was the percentage of male fish produced. The results showed that although the effect of the treatment was not significantly different, but it can be said to be significantly different to the treatment of 0 mg L-1 (control) to obtain the best result for masculinization of guppy at 30 mg L-1 immersion and the best survival rate on treatment of 0 mg L-1 (control). The re-sults of this study suggest that the masculinization technology on the parent stock can be done using extracts of sea cu-cumber innards which has been considered as waste.

Caesalpinia pulcherrima is an exotic shrub species, belonging to the Fabaceae family, that has medicinal properties, and is widely used for urban afforestation. The objective of this research was to evaluate the overcoming of the C. pulcherrima seed dormancy, the influence of temperature, storage, and water quantity on the substrate in the germination of the species, as well as the use of the tetrazolium test for viability analysis. The analyzes were carried out at the Plant Propagation Laboratory at the Agricultural Sciences Center of the Federal University of Alagoas, in the municipality of Rio Largo, Brazil, and at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Arapiraca Campus, at the same University. The experiments were performed under a completely randomized design, with four replicates of 25 seeds. The results demonstrated that during storage the seeds developed a possible secondary dormancy, which was overcome with a time of twelve months of storage. The C. pulcherrima seeds subjected to the test of light qualities presented a significant difference in their germination percentage when verified with the time of storage. In the far-red quality, the newly harvested seeds had a germination percentage of (98%), higher than seeds with 12 months of storage (80.5%). The water volume 3.5-fold the weight of the dry paper provides (90%) germination when compared to other volumes. The tetrazolium salt concentrations of 0.075% and 0.1%, under the temperature of 30°C within 2 hours, are indicated for the viability analysis of Caesalpinia pulcherrima seeds.

ABSTRACT               Masculinization is a method of  sex reversal technique that can direct sexuality from female to male. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of coconut water on masculinization in guppy by immersion administration. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments and three replications. After 12 days post spawning, female guppies were immersed for 8 hours. The concentrations were : 0%(P0), 20% (P1), and 40% (P2). The parameters were observed including percentage of male, survival rate and water quality (thermal, pH and kalium concentration). Baby guppies were reared until sex can be determined which were 42 days of culture. The result showed that the percentage of male guppy fish was 54.44% (P0), 77.78% (P1) and 90.00% (P2). The survival rate of  larval during maintenance was 100% for all treatments. Water quality during maintenance was 27.0-28.40C for temperature and 6.38-7.20 for pH. To sum up, this experiment proved that coconut water can be used for masculinization by immersed pregnant female broadstock and it produced 90% male when immersed with 40% of coconut water. Keywords : Coconut water, guppy (Poecilia reticulata), masculinization

A factorial experiment was conducted with a completely randomized design to evaluate the effects of planting date and density on calendula herbs and peppermint. It had 3 replicates and was done in Khosroshahr research farm, Tabriz in 2006. Under studied factors were: 3 planting dates (10 May, 25 May and 10 June) in 4 densities (25, 35, 45, 55) of the plant in square meters. The results of variance a nalysis showed that there was 1% probability significant difference between the effects of planting date and bush density on the leave number, bush height and the bush dry weight. But the mutual effect of the plant date in mentioned traits density was insignificant. Regarding the traits mean comparison, the total maximum dry weight was about the 55 bush density in mm. Also, the bush high density in mm causes the bush growth and its mass reduction. When there is the density grain, the flower number will increase due to bush grain in surface unit. Overall, we can conclude that 10 June planting and 45 bush density in mm is the most suitable items and results in favored production with high essence for these crops.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to understand the influence of sowing depth and the amount of sugarcane straw on the emergence of weed species Luffa aegyptiaca Miller (Cucurbitaceae); Mucuna aterrima Piper & Tracy (Fabaceae - Leguminosae) and Ricinus communis (Euphorbiaceae). A completely randomized design with a 5 x 4 x 3 factorial layout with four replications was used, at five sowing depths (0, 2, 4, 8 and 10 cm), four different amounts of sugarcane straw (0, 5, 10 and 15 t ha-1) and three different evaluation periods (7, 14 and 21 days after sowing). After sowing, different amounts of sugarcane straw (0, 5, 10 and 15 t ha-1) were deposited on soil. Seedling emergence was analyzed at 7, 14 and 21 days after sowing, counting the number of seedlings that had emerged. At the end of the trial, weed height (cm), leaf area (cm2) and shoot dry mass (g) were measured. In relation to emergence ability, studied species presented different responses according to sowing depth and to the amount of sugarcane straw deposited on the soil. For the L.aegyptiacaand M.aterrima, no significant difference was observed in the interaction between depth and sugarcane straw, showing the adaptation of these species to no-burn sugarcane system. For R.communis, seeds placed at 0 cm of sugar cane straw depth were observed to favor the emergence of seedlings.
