The case is made and proposals are drawn for the development of ontologies of scientific and technological forecasting to secure national interests based on the descriptions of expertise in the forecast domain and the methodology of concept maps. Concept maps of scientific and technological advances are visualised and applicability is described for ontological methods in scientific and technological forecasting, as well as the specifics of automation. The novel contribution of the research findings consists in the authors' systemic and comprehensive approach in describing the ontological principles of scientific and technological forecasting to secure national interests. This eliminates the ambiguity in approaches and conceptualisations of the processes of scientific and technological forecasting. The proposed ontological system of scientific and technological forecasting to secure national interests offers a systemic approach to forecast development and uniform interpretations of the concepts involved. All that would doubtlessly contribute to quality forecasting.

The purpose of this chapter is to present research findings and address the Generational Differences Relative to Data-Based Wisdom. Data-Based Wisdom is defined as the use of technology, leadership, and culture to create, transfer, and preserve the organizational knowledge embedded in its data, with a view to achieving the organizational vision. So what will comparing Generational Differences effectively do to help achieve organizational vision? If you don't know your history, you are doomed to repeat it; therefore, with the accumulation of ever growing data, understanding the necessary steps to store them properly and ability to retrieve them in an efficient manner are both explicit and tacit knowledge that are outside the scope of the conventional multi-disciplined approach to achieving organizational objectives. With time, technology, leadership, and culture have transformed into more than tangible items, social leadership concepts, and learned behavioral patterns. The latter three ideas have evolved along with the technological advances infused into society as we know it today. Therefore, the value and emphasis to develop and maintain intricate and efficient knowledge management databases suitable to create, transfer, and preserve organizational knowledge embedded in its data has never been more vital. The importance will continue to grow as changes in technology, leadership concepts, and culture continue to inundate.

Technological advances have touched nearly every aspect of human life in recent decades, including the world of work. This chapter provides an overview of how these advances have specifically affected talent management. Organized around the primary elements of the talent-management lifecycle (identifying talent, acquiring talent, developing talent, and evaluating talent), each section provides a summary of current research findings and practice trends, examples illustrating those trends, and questions to guide future research. Several themes cut across these sections, including (1) the potential for technology to help individuals to identify, grow, and manage their talent in a more proactive ways, (2) the increasing use of engaging simulations for recruitment, selection, and developmental purposes, and (3) the need for systematic research to investigate the many intriguing questions raised by technology’s dramatic influence throughout the talent-management field.

Recent experimental research has indicated that different multiple faults impose differing levels of objective and subjective difficulty on human troubleshooters. Technological advances suggest that systems are becoming more complex and integrated, in which case multiple components will fail. Operators will have to be able to deal with these more complex failures. In this paper we report field work conducted in order to build and substantiate a model of the factors influencing fault diagnosis in the field. By conducting field observations and by constructing concept maps, we investigated how expert troubleshooters handle the difficulty associated with diagnosing multiple faults. The troubleshooters were expert electronic technicians in departmental repair shops on a large university campus. The end product of the research is a model of fault diagnosis that is grounded in field data. Our results suggest that diagnostic difficulty arises from several factors: (1) organizational structure, (2) technicians' strategies for fault diagnosis, and (3) equipment design. The field observations and concept maps indicate that technicians approach the diagnostic task with standard, ritualistic methods that they have developed over years of experience. They generally go through two phases of troubleshooting: (1) the problem definition phase and (2) what we call the At-the-Equipment-TroubleShooting (AETS) phase. Technicians also reason about multiple failures in series, considering one simple explanation at a time. Our principal conclusion is that in real-world settings the three previously mentioned factors have evolved to avoid situations in which technicians must engage in prolonged functional reasoning. These findings will be used (1) to develop further the model of fault diagnosis, and (2) to guide future experimental investigations studying the influences of fault diagnosis.

The subject of this article is the problem of identity of the characters in the novel “In Search of the Primordial Land” by the regional Khanty writer Eremey Aipin. The goal is to describe the key vectors of reflections of the main characters on personal and national identity. The author aims to analyze the path of spiritual and social becoming, as well as finding true identity in the world and society of the protagonists of the novel — “man of the kin” Matvey Taishin and the hero “without kith or kin” Roman Romanov. The study leans on the interdisciplinary comprehensive approach, with the use of cultural-historical, typological, ethno-cultural, axiological and imagological methods of analysis. The scientific novelty lies in examination of the characters of the literary work from the perspective of their identity and identification. Analysis is conducted on the two ways of finding true identity by the characters in the small and big world. Path of “man of the kin” is the cognition of capabilities of staying in the world, strengthening of inviolable faith as the essential link in the chain of life, nature, Cosmos, and humanity. Path of the hero “without kith or kin” is a series of initiations (according to V. Y. Propp), as a result of which he gradually assimilates to the “earthly world”, having acquired the experience of merging with society. It is proven that solution of the questions on personal, social and national identity of the characters of the novel is interrelated with the author's traditionalistic worldview. The conclusion is made that in a crisis historical situation, the characters of the novel intuitively tilt towards ancient cultural memory of humanity, seeing its as a basis for reconstruction of identity.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of deforming tendencies on Persian translation of Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles based on Berman’s model. Moreover, the study set out to find out how words have been changed from the source language to fit the target language by adopting deforming tendencies. To achieve the aims of study, the researchers relied on content or document analysis as a qualitative type of study to analyze the strategies which were used in the translation of Tess of the d’Urbervilles novel from English to Persian. The data came from a sample of 300 sentences which were randomly selected from the novel translated into the Persian language by Mina Sarabi. The trustworthiness of the research findings was met through inter-rater agreement and it was reported 0.94. The results indicated that Persian translation of the work suffered from lexical mismatches, destruction of rhythm and destruction of vernacular networks, although destruction of rhythms and destruction of vernacular networks were among the most frequently used deformation tendencies. The findings also revealed that the translation has in one way or another maintained the genre and social stance of the author. Overall, it appears that Berman offers a model which is too severe on keeping the form and syntax of the source text in the Persian translation of Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

The short story is the only genre that can be considered uniquely American. The genre began as sketches, or tales, as in the classic tale “Rip Van Winkle.” The genre remained undefined until Edgar Allan Poe’s well-known 1842 review of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Twice-Told Tales. Since Poe’s review, in which he distinguished short fiction from other genres, the American short story has evolved both in form and in content. Like other genres, the short story has evolved through various movements and traditions such as realism, modernism, and postmodernism; however, it has remained unique because of publishing opportunities that differ from longer works such as the novel. The short story genre shares elements of fiction with the novel, traditionally consisting of characteristics such as plot, character, setting, point of view, theme, and writing style. Although the short story shares elements of literature and writing devices with other literary genres, avenues for publication differ greatly. Unlike a novel, a short story is not published as a single entity. It is usually presented with works by other authors in a journal or magazine or in a collection of previously published stories by one author. The rise in popular magazines during the 1920s gave rise to the short story, as the magazines provided a publication outlet. During the second half of the 20th century the short story became less commercial and more literary, paving the way for artistic stories such as one appropriately called “The New Yorker Story.” However, as it became less commercial, the short story fell from popularity and became somewhat obscure in the manner in which poetry remains. Because short stories do not sell, publishers are hesitant to produce them. But during the 1970s, American universities began teaching creative writing classes, and the short story provided a suitable genre for teaching the art of fiction writing. Hence, the American short story experienced a renaissance, and a wave of literary journals emerged. About this time, minimalism was one of the styles most often used in the short story. Raymond Carver built on what Ernest Hemingway had started in America, and the short story took on a new form. During the latter half of the 20th century and early 21st century, women and ethnic writers were given more opportunities to publish short fiction, and the short story reflected progress in civil rights issues. Currently, the rise in technological advances has brought even more opportunities for publication, and more and more American authors are publishing short stories online, now a respected publication venue.
