Introduction. Needle stick injury (NSI) is an occupational health and safety issue. Nursing students are prone to NSI due to lack of experience with handling needles and sharps. Aim. To determine the level of knowledge about the prevention of NSI and examine the level of knowledge about the post-exposure procedure and the students’ understanding of NSI. Methods. The study was conducted in 2017 at the University of Applied Health Sciences in Zagreb. The participants were nursing students from all regions of Croatia. The data was collected using a questionnaire containing 17 questions specifically designed for this study. One question had three subquestions and one had five subquestions regarding the knowledge of how to react if a needle stick injury occurs. The participants also responded to a questionnaire on their socio-demographic data. Results. The study included 149 students. The results show that 16 students have experienced NSI. A statistically significant difference was observed among students who have finished a secondary medical school in the answers about post-NSI interventions and in answers to the question of whether the needle should be recapped. The respondents from medical schools answered correctly. A statistically significant difference was observed among students from non-medical secondary schools in the answers about education on post-exposition procedures and in the answers about necessary action following a needle stick injury. The respondents from non-medical secondary schools had higher scores. Conclusion. The results of this study can be used to establish appropriate education strategies, increase the awareness of needle stick injuries and minimize the occurrence of these injuries among nursing students in Croatia.

Needle stick injury (NSI) is one of the major causes of blood borne infections in the present day healthcare system. Among healthcare professionals, nursing students will most likely be exposed to this dilemma. Interventions like institutionalizing educational programs to produce awareness and knowledge among nurses can depict positive outcomes in changing perceptions toward safety measures. This study aimed to investigate the incidence, perspectives, views, perceptions, and knowledge of NSIs among nursing students studying at Al-Hussein Bin Talal University. The sample population consisted of all undergraduate nursing students from second to fourth academic levels at the university who consented to participate in this study. The mode of data collection utilized a self-structured questionnaire apportioned into four parts. The first portion of the questionnaire presented the socio-demographic details of the respondents. The second part of the questionnaire demonstrated questions about needle stick incidences at the clinical units of the participants; frequency of occurrences (i.e., number, nature, and rationale); place of occurrence; and, whether the event was reported to higher authorities. The third part of the questionnaire entailed queries associated with the knowledge of the students with respect to needle stick injury. The last part focused on the student's knowledge and perception on the risks associated to needle sticks injuries and the relative precautions to prevent such. The results showed that most of the students had positive perception of NSIs; while two thirds of the student nurses experienced NSI with increasing number of injured nurses occurring among second year students. This is due to the lack of knowledge regarding universal precaution guidelines and acupuncture safety device. Nursing students are at risks of getting infection. Proper steps are needed to promote awareness of NSI as well as the dangers and prevention from such events.

Introducción: Las infecciones asociadas a la atención de salud (IAAS) son eventos frecuentes durante la atención sanitaria, su inclusión en el currículo universitario representa una prevención al momento de formar futuros profesionales. Objetivo: Evaluar el nivel de conocimientos sobre infecciones asociadas a la atención de salud y su prevención en los estudiantes de enfermería de séptimo y octavo semestre de la Universidad Técnica de Ambato. Método: estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo y transversal, durante el periodo octubre–noviembre en modalidad virtual donde se seleccionaron 154 estudiantes, de séptimo y octavo semestre. Se aplicó una encuesta previamente validada que con 3 áreas: Infecciones asociadas a la atención de salud, precauciones universales e higiene de manos. Una puntuación promedio de 17,5 fue considerada como un nivel aceptable de conocimiento. Resultados: El 74,68% de los participantes tienen un conocimiento aceptable sobre IAAS y su prevención, siendo el área de precauciones universales, donde existe un mayor conocimiento (82,47% de los participantes). No existe diferencia significativa entre el conocimiento de los estudiantes de séptimo semestre que van al internado y los de octavo que ya están en el internado, y la mayoría de estudiantes obtuvieron este conocimiento dentro del plan de estudios universitario. Conclusiones: La puntuación general mostró un nivel de conocimiento aceptable para toda la muestra. Los estudiantes de enfermería han adquirido estos conocimientos a través de su plan de estudios universitarios, aunque es necesario profundizar en aspectos relacionados a la higiene de manos en donde obtuvieron una menor ponderación. ABSTRACT Introduction: Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are frequents events during health care, the incorporation of these topic inside the university classrooms represents a prevention at the moment of forming future professionals. Objective: Evaluating the level of knowledge about health care-associated infections and their prevention among nursing students in their seventh and eighth semester at the Universidad Técnica de Ambato. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive and transversal study was carried out during the period October - November in a virtual modality where 154 students were selected, from the seventh and the eighth semester. A previously validated survey was applied about 3 specific areas such as: health care associated infections, universal precautions and hand hygiene. An average score of 17,5 were considered like an adequate level of knowledge. Results: 74,68% of participants have an acceptable knowledge regarding HAI and their prevention, being, the area of universal precautions, the most known about among students (82.47%). There is no significant difference between the knowledge of the seventh semester students who go to the boarding school and the eighth semester students who are already in the boarding school and the most students obtained their knowledge within the university curriculum. Conclusion: The general score showed an acceptable level of knowledge for the sample. Nursing students have acquired their knowledge trough their university study plan, even though it’s necessary to deepen the aspects related to hands hygiene in which they attained a poor pondering. Background: Physical activity is one of the leading health indicators, considered an essential factor in the population's health and quality of life promotion. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Physical inactivity has been linked with chronic disease and obesity in most populations. This study aims to compare the prevalence of physical activity and overweight/obesity among students of the university. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from March to September 2019 on undergraduate students from different departments of Peshawar University. A sample of 377 (male n = 243, female n = 134) was taken through convenience sampling. Those individuals who were physically disabled and not willing to participate were excluded from the study. Those meeting the inclusion criteria were given the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ short form). Demographic data included age, weight, and height was self-stated by the participants. The levels of physical activity in each of three domains (leisure, transport, and domestic) were calculated and presented as metabolic equivalent (M.E.T.) hour per week in the form of means, percentage, and frequency in different physical activity domains. Results: The overall sample showed that 13.70% of participants were inactive, 27.76% showed a low level of physical activity, 41.29% showed moderate physical activity level, and 17.24% showed a high level of physical activity. A total of 90.98% of participants were involved in leisure physical activities, 93.10% presented transport-related physical activity, and 74.80% were involved in domestic-related physical activity. Average time spent during sitting was found to be 53.32 hrs/week and 7.61 hrs/ day, with females being more involved in sitting activities as compared to males. A significant difference was found between B.M.I. and sitting domain (p-value 0.002) with a Pearson value of -0.12 showing a negative correlation. Conclusion: The B.M.I. and Physical Activity are found negatively associated with each other. Male students were more physically active than females as females spend their majority of time sitting. It is concluded that students are moderately active, while a minimal percent of students are highly active. There were a few numbers of respondents too who were physically inactive, which shows that there is still unawareness of physical activity on the university level.

The objectives of this descriptive and quantitative study were to identify and assess the level of knowledge of undergraduate nursing students concerning factors related to the sexually transmitted disease, Human Papillomavirus (HPV). A questionnaire was administered to 58 undergraduate nursing students at the University of Sao Paulo at Ribeirão Preto, College of Nursing. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through the Epi Info software. Results revealed that 46.6% of the participants are sexually active; 96.3% reported safe sex with the use of condoms, though 29.6% of them do not use one regularly. Regarding the forms of transmission, 69% reported knowing them, while only 20.7% reported knowledge of HPV's signs and symptoms. Additionally, 54.3% of the adolescents reported not knowing what HPV can cause. Greater investment in health education directed to young individuals is required to promote health and prevent diseases, particularly those caused by the Human Papillomavirus.

The success of every construction projects largely depends on the level of commitment of the clients. This study examined the factors influencing the level of clients’ commitment to sustainable construction practices in Nigeria. A questionnaire survey was use to collect data from the public and private construction clients on the level of influence of 16 factors extracted from the literature. A total of 182 valid questionnaires were used for analysis. The result revealed that nine factors with weighted average (W) 0.8≤W≤1 have a high level of influence, whereas seven factors with 0.6≤W≤0.8 have a high-medium level of influence on the clients’ commitment. However, the five most influential factors were: client knowledge and awareness, Cost implication and mechanism of financial involvement, economic value and return on investment, end-user/client perception and preference, and health and safety implications. The result further revealed that there is significant difference on how these factors influence the level of commitment of sustainable construction practices of the public and private clients. The study suggested that the disparity was due to the differences in the level of knowledge, awareness, involvement and commitment of the public and private clients to sustainable construction concept. Hence, it is important to optimize the level of knowledge and awareness of the clients, about the cost, benefits/profits, and health and safety implications of sustainable construction practices so as to promote the level of client’s commitment to sustainable construction practices. It recommended for adequate client involvement throughout the sustainable construction life cycle and a sustained awareness campaign, championed by relevant government agencies and professional organizations through different public programs so as to increase the clients’ commitment and desirability to demand for more sustainable construction projects.

Introduction. Hemodynamic monitoring is of great importance because it covers all vital organic systems and their functioning, and any error in the interpretation of the monitored parameters can lead to a drastic deterioration of the patient’s condition and cause death. Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of knowledge about hemodynamic monitoring of full-time and part-time students of the first, second, and third year of the undergraduate study of nursing at the University of Applied Health Sciences in Zagreb. Methods. A cross sectional study was conducted. The survey subjects were students at the University of Applied Health Sciences in Zagreb (N=280) in the period between December 2020 and February 2021. For the purposes of the study, the authors created a questionnaire that students filled in using an online platform, and the results of the questionnaire were anonymous. Results. The research found that most students have an adequate level of knowledge in the field of hemodynamic monitoring. By determining differences in knowledge of part-time and full-time nursing students, it was observed that students with work experience showed statistically significantly better results (p<0.05). Conclusion. The conducted study showed an adequate level of knowledge of nursing studies, since a high number of students, outside of their faculty obligations, have not been in contact with hemodynamic monitoring. The specificity and complexity of work in the intensive care unit comes from a particularly vulnerable population of patients who require maximum care, which is why nurses need continuous education, skill improvement, and training regarding new monitoring methods.

Since decreasing level of knowledge of mathematics is the problem at universities, not only in the Czech Republic, we try to define some reasons for that between our students from different secondary schools. The paper discusses the results of the examinations in mathematics at the university in the Czech Republic. The aim is focused on the differences between the scores of students from different secondary schools. We compare the results of two tests which students have to pass during the semester. In addition, we compare the impact of introducing a new subject called “Math seminar”. This seminar should help students to complete their knowledge of topics from mathematics of secondary schools. We observe the improvement of students who passed the Math seminar. We observe the impact of passing the school-leaving exam from mathematics as well. We would like to consider this as a part of a long-term monitoring of students in this study programme and re-analyze unsuccessful students after they pass the course “Math seminar”.

Abstract Background Adequate training of health workers is pivotal in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). Our aim was to assess the theoretical and applied knowledge about the risk factors and effective measures of HAI prevention (most notably the use of standard precautions and hand hygiene practices) in second year undergraduate university nursing students that have already completed obligatory courses in microbiology, infectious diseases and epidemiology. Methods This study included a whole generation of second year undergraduate nursing students, comprised of 161 female and 25 male participants (186 in total), from a public university in Croatia (University Centre Varaždin, University North). They were given an anonymous questionnaire (developed on the model used by Tavolacci et al. in 2008) covering three domains: General Knowledge of HAI, Standard Precautions (SP) and Hand Hygiene (HH). The acceptable score overall (max. 30) and for each area (max. 10) was arbitrarily set at ≥ 20 and ≥ 7, respectively (in accordance with prior research). Results The age range of surveyed students was 19–37 (mean: 21.97, median: 21, mod: 20). An accurate definition of nosocomial infections was provided by 98.92% students (with 60.75% of them defining it as the infection occurring 48 hours after hospital admission). The overall score was 21.5, which indicates sufficient level of applied knowledge of healthcare-associated infections. Very high level of knowledge was observed for the SP area (total score of 9.5); however, the level of knowledge in HAI and HH domains was inadequate (5.9 and 6.1, respectively). There was no statistically significant difference in the overall or specific scores between male and female students (P > 0.05). Formal teaching during the curriculum was students’ primary source of information (60.22%), followed by practical learning in the ward during work (23.65%), formal teaching in the ward (9.68%) and self-learning (6.45%). Conclusion Periodical checking of nursing students’ knowledge on HAI and corresponding curriculum modifications in obligatory courses tackling this topic are advised in order to fill the knowledge gaps, improve training, reduce infection rates and increase compliance with prevention measures. Abstract Background: Infection control is a major component in health care practices. The health care team while providing services of curative, promotive or preventive, inevitably create waste and also cause injury which may be hazardous to health. Poor waste management practices pose a huge risk to the health of public, patients, professionals and also contribute to environmental degradation. Nurses as the part of health care personnel is expected to have proper knowledge, practice, and 6 capacity to guide others for waste collection, management, and proper handling techniques. Method: A descriptive study was conducted to assess the knowledge of nurses on biomedical waste Management, spillage management and to determine needle stick injury among 210 registered nurses working in various wards of selected hospital. The convenient sampling technique was used to select the subjects. Baseline proforma and structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect the data and data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: In this study it has been found that the majority of staff nurses (78.6%) had good level of knowledge, 18.1% had very good level of knowledge and 3.33% had satisfactory level of knowledge on Biomedical Waste and Spillage Management and Needle Stick Injury. Conclusion: The findings of the study have shown that majority of staff nurses have good level of knowledge on Biomedical Waste and Spillage Management and Needle Stick Injury.

Abstract Background Intentional injuries refer to injuries resulting from purposeful human action, whether directed at oneself or others. This study was performed to assess intentional injuries in Iranian university students. Methods This cross-sectional study was carried out with 430 female and male university in three higher education institutions located in the northern part of Iran in the year 2015. Samples were chosen through the stratified cluster random sampling method. They were requested to fill out the demographic data form and the Persian version of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey Questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis via the SPSS v.13 software. Findings Intentional injuries were more frequent in the male university students than female (p < 0.05). Also, 9.1% and 6.7% of the university students were physically injured or sexually assaulted by a boy/girl friend. No statistically significant difference was reported in dating violence between the male and female university students. The logistic regression test showed that the history of stealing money from parents without their permission, son’s preferences in the family and gender are the most important predisposing factors for the university students’ intentional injury. Conclusion It is suggested that health policy makers consider the role of family in programs that have been designed for improving the health of young people.
