Good communication is required to build and maintain mutual relationship in project teams. This is because effective communication can enable a work team to achieve their goals. This stems from the fact that when the employees understand the management expectations and target goals, they will be able to do their work task based on the required standard. Also, effective communication is critical to the success of team work because the ability to work together without issues is determined by conveying the right information at the right. However, despite the crucial role played by effective communication in a productive work environment, it was found that Matrix Coating Resource Sdn Bhd (MCR) often experience communication issues among the workforce and this result to workplace conflict and employee relationship issues. It was on this note that this consultancy project critically examined the communications and employee relationships practices of MCR in order to determine key areas required to improve project tasks completion. A sample of 50 respondents were chosen from the workforce using both interview and questionnaire instruments. The study found that the staff of Matrix often experience communication issues and this leads to disagreements and misunderstanding among the workforce. This is because proper communication using appropriate channel can help to ease both the number and severity of workplace conflicts. Driven by this, it was proposed that the management of Matrix should do well to employ people with solid communication skills because this will allow them to work together cohesively and professionally, address the issue through training exercises and behaviour modeling. It should conduct constant training programmes especially for the new staff so as to improve their ability to communicate clearly and concisely with colleagues and work team members, include communication skills in the appraisal of employees’ performance and tie the organization’s objectives into performance appraisal so as to achieve the goals of the company and develop team building exercises to strengthen intra-office relationship. This is because high performance teams often become more cohesive overtime as they gain experiences working and communicating with other teams in the workplace. Therefore, exciting activities such as informal networking groups, team exercises and others so as to enable the staff to work together in a cohesive way. The team building process will allow the team members to learn the best ways to work together through team experience without issues.

Clinical and laboratory services do not operate in isolation but are integrated into the clinical and managerial framework of a hospital, and in the UK into a nationwide network (the NHS). This provides a constraint in both managerial and financial terms and also provides a legal framework in which services are delivered. It is essential that no matter where the patient is treated the right diagnosis is reached and the appropriate treatment is given. This chapter describes quality and managerial issues related to immunology and allergy, and gives an overview of the structure of the NHS.

Quality management in clinical microbiology began in the 1960s. Both government and professional societies introduced programs for proficiency testing and laboratory inspection and accreditation. Many laboratory scientists and pathologists were independently active and creative in expanding efforts to monitor and improve practices. The initial emphasis was placed on intralaboratory process. Later, attention was shifted to physician ordering, specimen collection, reporting, and use of information. Quality management in the laboratory depends in large part on the monitoring of indicators that provide some evidence of how laboratory resources are being used and how the information benefits patient care. Continuous quality improvement should be introduced. This consists of a more thorough assessment of doing the right things versus the wrong things in terms of customer demand and satisfaction and studying the cumulative effect of error when responsibility is passed from one person to another. Prevention of error is accomplished more through effective training and continuing education than through surveillance. Also, this system will force more conscious attention to meeting the expectations of the many customers that must be satisfied by laboratory services, including patients, physicians, third-party payers, and managed-care organizations.

In a clinical laboratory services pre-analytical phase has plays an important role in term of quality and patient safety. Pre-analytical phase is a phase before analyzing sample in laboratory which  includes  patient preparation, sampling, labeling, sample transportation, sample storage,  and preservation of samples that might influence the laboratory results. In this phase it involves interaction between patient, doctor, laboratory personels, and other staff outside the laboratory. Therefore, it could be assumed that in this phase many sample are collected, many laboratory tests are requested, many individuals are involved and therefore laboratory errors might be occured. Laboratory errors can occur either in pre-analytical, analytical, or post analytical phases but the most frequently errors occur in pre-analytical phase. In this article, quality improvement efforts in pre-analytical phase will be discussed in order to minimize pre-analytical error.

Abstract Background Quality indicators (QIs) are crucial tools in measuring the quality of laboratory services. Based on the general QIs of the Working Group “Laboratory Errors and Patient Safety (WG-LEPS)” of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC), specific QIs have been established in order to monitor and improve the quality of molecular diagnostics, and to assess the detection level of associated disease. Methods A survey was conducted on 46 independent commercial laboratories in China, investigated using questionnaires and on-site inspections. Specific QIs established were mainly based on the specific laboratory work-flow for molecular diagnoses. The specific QI results from three volunteer laboratories were collected and used to validate their effectiveness. Results Of the 46 laboratories participating in the study, 44 (95.7%), conducted molecular diagnostics. Of 13 specific established QIs, six were priority level 1, and seven, priority level 3. At pre-evaluation of data from the three volunteering laboratories, it was found that the newly classified specific QIs had outstanding advantages in error identification and risk reduction. Conclusions Novel specific QIs, a promising tool for monitoring and improving upon the total testing process in molecular diagnostics, can effectively contribute to ensuring patient safety.

AbstractLaboratory services around the world are undergoing substantial consolidation and changes through mechanisms ranging from mergers, acquisitions and outsourcing, primarily based on expectations to improve efficiency, increasing volumes and reducing the cost per test. However, the relationship between volume and costs is not linear and numerous variables influence the end cost per test. In particular, the relationship between volumes and costs does not span the entire platter of clinical laboratories: high costs are associated with low volumes up to a threshold of 1 million test per year. Over this threshold, there is no linear association between volumes and costs, as laboratory organization rather than test volume more significantly affects the final costs. Currently, data on laboratory errors and associated diagnostic errors and risk for patient harm emphasize the need for a paradigmatic shift: from a focus on volumes and efficiency to a patient-centered vision restoring the nature of laboratory services as an integral part of the diagnostic and therapy process. Process and outcome quality indicators are effective tools to measure and improve laboratory services, by stimulating a competition based on intra- and extra-analytical performance specifications, intermediate outcomes and customer satisfaction. Rather than competing with economic value, clinical laboratories should adopt a strategy based on a set of harmonized quality indicators and performance specifications, active laboratory stewardship, and improved patient safety.

Abstract. Communication is an ability that must be owned by a doctor, with this ability doctors can obtain information from a patient, in addition to delivering education, a doctor must have a good communication skills. In dealing with elderly patients, doctors must be able to determine the method to be used, because the elderly’s ability to understand something new is different from the patient in general. With this difference in ability, elderly patients also have to get different communication methods. The purpose of this study was to determine which educational method was the most appropriate for doctors to use for elderly patients regarding the ability of the elderly. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with analytical descriptive, where data is collected by observing, interviewing, and comparing with similar journals that have ever existed. From the data collected, it will be analyzed and obtained in descriptive form. The results of the research conducted are that the most appropriate education for elderly patients is an integrated method, in which this method combines implicit methods and explicit methods. With the results of this study, it is expected that doctors can use the right educational method for elderly patients thereby reducing errors in treatment.
