Background. Stress and Anxiety are commonly observed before major surgical procedures, such as heart surgical operations. Aim of the current study is to investigate the effect of the preoperative anaesthesiological interview on these parameters. Methods. We prospectively included in the study 152 patients planned to undergo elective heart surgery. All patients were examined with the State-Trait anxiety inventory (STAI) scale on admission and again before surgery (prior to the anaesthesiological interview for the control group and after the latter for the intervention group). Results. Members of the control group had significantly higher levels of stress based on the test results, on the day prior to surgery. On the contrary, the members of the intervention group had significantly lower levels of stress on the same day. Conclusions. The anaesthesiological interview has a positive influence as it lowers the preoperative levels of stress and anxiety.

This experimental study aims to evaluate the effects of relaxation exercises on the ways of coping with stress and anxiety level in primiparous women diagnosed with preterm labor. The study included a total of 60 pregnant women who were admitted to the outpatients clinics of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at a tertiary setting between November 2012 and February 2014. Of these women, 30 were allocated into the intervention group and 30 were allocated into the control group. The Pregnant Women Identity Information Form, Ways of Coping with Stress Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used as data collection tools. The pregnant women in the intervention group achieved higher scores in the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory in the first assessment and lower scores in the final assessment, and the difference from baseline was significantly different (p<0.005). The women in the control group achieved lower scores in the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory in the first assessment and higher scores in the final assessment, and the difference from baseline was significantly different (p<0.005). The scores of pregnant women in the intervention group in efficient ways of coping subscale increased as from the baseline (p<0.005), whereas there was an increase in the scores of women in the control group in inefficient ways of coping subscale and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.005). Our study results suggest that relaxation exercises are effective in reducing anxiety and coping with stress in pregnant women with imminent premature labor.

Abstract Introduction Coronary angiography and angioplasty is widely used in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. Limited time to explain the procedure to patients in busy clinical settings may lead to increased adverse outcomes. Purpose To evaluate the effectiveness of a portable patient education video in improving knowledge and allaying patient"s anxiety prior to coronary angiography and angioplasty. Methods Consecutive patients undergoing coronary angiography and angioplasty were prospectively recruited over 1 year from June 2016 to May 2017 from a tertiary cardiac institution. We developed a 3 minute animated patient education video on the procedure. Patients were randomised 1:3 into a control group (receiving routine standard of care) and intervention group (watched video plus routine standard of care). Before the procedure, a self-administered written survey was conducted in the control group, pre-video in the intervention group, and post-video in the intervention group. Demographic data, knowledge and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scores were gathered. Figure 1 shows excerpts of the video. Results We recruited 332 patients- 80 controls (80% males, mean age 59.6 ± 11.5, 51% previous procedures) and 252 intervention group (86% males, mean age 59.0 ± 9.4, 52% previous procedure). Compared to the control group, the intervention group had lower overall baseline knowledge scores (7.6vs8.5, p = 0.022) and similar anxiety scores (94vs92, p = 0.323); but significantly higher overall knowledge scores (10.3vs8.5, p= <0.001) and lower anxiety scores (75vs92, p= <0.001) after watching the video. Within the intervention group, there was a significant increase in overall knowledge scores (7.6vs10.3, p= <0.001) and reduction in anxiety scores (94vs 75, p= <0.001) before versus after watching the video. See Table 1. Subjectively, after watching the video, 98% of the patients reported benefit, 96% were more prepared and 85% less worried. There was significant improvement in knowledge scores and reduction in anxiety scores (p < 0.001) in the subset of patients who had previously underwent a similar procedure (n = 131). Conclusion The video improved knowledge and reduced anxiety in patients undergoing coronary angiography and angioplasty. This is a useful adjunct to incorporate into existing workflows to improve patient care. Introduction: Bone formation marker osteocalcin (OC) and bone resorption marker C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX) can be used to detect or to monitor the early responses of the skeleton to physical activity. Literature suggests that it is likely that higher body mass index (BMI) has positive effect on bones and can postpone onset of osteoporosis.Aim of the Study: The aim of this study is to:1.Determine the effect of aerobic physical acitivity on OC and CTX in young women2.Investigate correlation of OC, CTX and BMI in young women engaged into structured aerobic excerciseMaterial and methods: Study included 64 healthy young women, aged 19 to 25 years, devided into two groups: intervention group (n=32) and control group (n=32). The study duration was six weeks with follow-up period of four weeks. The intervention group underwent structured aerobic physical activity program for six weeks, but the control group did not receive such program. Level of OC, CTX and BMI were measured at baseline, after 6-week aerobic program, and after 4-week follow up (only intervention group). Results: There was significant increase of OC level after 6-week aerobic program, while level of CTX did not changed. OC level was at its maximum immediately after finishing the program in the participants with normal BMI (p<0.001). There was no statistically significant interaction of BMI and CTX level. Conclusion: Aerobic physical activity increases level of osteocalcin, suggesting that it has positive influence on bone formation in young women, primarily in women with normal BMI.

Background Reflective testing, i.e. interpreting, commenting on and, if necessary, adding tests in order to aid the diagnostic process in a meaningful and efficient manner, is an extra service provided by laboratory medicine. However, there have been no prospective randomized controlled trials investigating the value of reflective testing in patient management. Methods In this trial, primary care patients were randomly allocated to an intervention group, where general practitioners received laboratory tests results as requested as well as add-on test results with interpretative comments where considered appropriate by the laboratory specialist, or to a control group, where general practitioners only received the laboratory test results requested. Patients’ medical records were evaluated with a follow-up period of six months. For both groups, the primary outcome measures, i.e. both intended action and actual management action, were blindly assessed by an independent expert panel as adequate, neutral or inadequate. Results In 226 of the 270 cases (84%), reflective testing was considered to be useful for the patient. In the intervention group ( n = 148), actual management by the general practitioner was scored as adequate ( n = 104; 70%), neutral ( n = 29; 20%) or not adequate ( n = 15; 10%). In the control group ( n = 122), these numbers were 57 (47%), 37 (30%) and 28 (23%). This difference was statistically significant ( P < 0.001). Conclusion This randomized controlled trial showed a positive effect of reflective testing in primary care patients on the adequacy of their management, as documented in medical records.

Childbirth is an anxiety-provoking event in a man’s life. Therefore, strategies to decrease paternal anxiety during childbirth are necessary. This study determined the effects of music and satisfaction of first-time Filipino fathers during childbirth. In the study, a prospective quasi-experimental design was utilized. Ninety-eight purposive samples of first-time fathers were included in the study, 50 were allocated in the experimental group (music group) and 48 in the control group (nonmusic group) during the months of August to October 2013. Paternal anxiety and satisfaction were measured using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Visual Analogue Scale for Satisfaction, respectively. Results revealed that the first-time fathers in the experimental group had lower State Trait Anxiety Inventory scores ( p < .05) and higher Visual Analogue Scale for Satisfaction scores ( p < .05) than those in the control group. Findings of the study provide substantial evidence to support the use of music in reducing anxiety and promoting satisfaction among first-time fathers during childbirth.
