Abstract Introduction The Dag defect is one of the primary morphological defects in sperm correlating with reduced fertility. This defect is found in the spermatozoa of many livestock species. The aim of the study was to assess the morphometry of the heads of normal sperm and sperm with the Dag defect in the semen of Duroc breeding boars. Material and Methods Sperm morphology was examined in ten ejaculates each from 12 Duroc boars. In total, 3,600 morphologically normal sperm and 838 sperm with the Dag defect were evaluated. The area, perimeter, length and width of the sperm head were measured and these basic morphometric parameters were used to calculate four additional shape indices characterising the sperm head, i.e. ellipticity, elongation, roughness and regularity. Results Sperm with this defect had markedly smaller heads, 0.32 μm shorter and 0.19 μm narrower than the heads of sperm with normal morphological structure. The heads of sperm with the Dag defect also had a 1.1μm smaller perimeter and a 2.5 μm2 smaller surface area than the heads of morphologically normal sperm. Conclusions The Dag defect is found in boar sperm irrespective of the age of the individual. It affects the morphology of the sperm head.

AbstractSemen was collected from Polish Halfbred stallions. Twenty individuals from 3 to 4 years of age were selected for the study. At least one ejaculate from each stallion was collected and assessed. Sperm morphology was evaluated using Papanicolaou stain, SpermBlue®, and a complex of eosin and gentian stain, whereas unstained slides were used as control samples. Morphometric measurements were performed on 100 randomly selected sperm heads in each ejaculate. The length, width, perimeter, and surface area of the sperm head were measured. The frequency of nuclear vacuoles was determined as well. Tygerberg’s strict criteria, which most precisely characterise the sperm head, were used in the morphological evaluation of the sperm. The results obtained indicate that in the case of staining with SpermBlue®and with eosin+gentian complex, the morphometry of the sperm head seems to be most similar to that observed in unstained smears. It also seems that neither shrinking nor swelling is uniform in the various staining techniques (Papanicolaou stain). Moreover, it appears that in comparison with unstained sperm, all methods caused the width of the head to increase as a result of swelling.

AbstrakTingginya angka pria perokok di seluruh dunia dan fakta bahwa asap rokok mengandung lebih dari 4000 bahan berbahaya yang dapat mengganggu sistem reproduksi. Gangguan yang terjadi dapat berupa penurunan kualitas spermatozoa yang dapat dilihat melalui analisis sperma. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat gambaran morfologi spermatozoa pada Perokok sedang di Lingkungan PE Group. Ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dari September 2012 hingga 2013, menggunakan metode total sampling sebanyak 33 pria perokok yang mendatangi Laboratorium Biologi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Andalas Padang. Parameter kelainan morfologi spermatozoa (teratozoospermia) diukur menurut kriteria WHO yaitu apabila jumlah sperma dengan bentuk normal yang dicacah ≥ 30%. Semua sampel menunjukkan hasil yang normal. Kesimpulan hasil penelitian ini adalah perokok sedang yang diteliti memiliki gambaran morfologi spermatozoa yang normal, dengan abnormalitas kepala sebagai abnormalitas terbanyak dan bentuk kelainan kepala besar sebagai bentuk kelainan yang paling banyak ditemukan.Kata kunci: rokok sigaret, analisis sperma, morfologi sperma, teratozoospermia AbstractThe large number of men worldwide smoke and the fact that cigarette smoke contains detriment substances that can affect the health holistically and especially fertility it self is the main reason. It contains more than four thousands of detrimental substances for instance oxidants, carcinogenic and mutagenic agents. The objective of this study was to evaluate sperm parameters especially it’s morphology among medium smokers in PE Group, ltd. In this descriptive study, started from September 2012 until 2013. A total of thirty three males who were classified as medium smokers were enrolled to Biology Laboratory Medical Faculty of Andalas University Padang. Teratozoospermia parameters were measured according to the World Health Organization criteria and Biology Infertility Division’s in which the normal Sperm morphology counts ≥30%. All of samples showed normal results, with the sperm-head abnormality as the major abnormality. The conclusions is all participants showed normal spermatozoa morphology counts and the head abnormality is the major detriments.Keywords: cigarette smoking, sperm analyzing, sperm morphology, teratozoospermia

<p>Morphological structure and chemical composition of environmental microplastics (MPs) extracted from water and bottom sediments of Lake Onego were studied. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify MPs polymer types and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive microanalysis was used to study the morphology and trace elements composition of inclusions on their surface. The features of the destruction of MPs, as well as the presence of various chemical elements on their surface including heavy metals, were investigated. Four main mechanisms of MPs microdestruction have been identified: (1) Local destruction of monophasic MPs caused by local oxidation and cleavage of thin flakes and fragments with the formation of nanoscale plastics. (2) The destruction of multiphase microplastics predominantly determined by the selective destruction of one of the phases of the composite, for example, the ligament scission between the individual components of the plastic with their separation. (3) Microbiological destruction of MPs under the influence of diatoms by fixing spores of diatoms on defects of MPs with their subsequent growth, deflection, and separation of nanoscale polymer particles. (4) Mineralogical destruction of MPs associated with the sorption of chemical elements and crystallization of nanocrystals, which under appropriate conditions begin to grow and break-up the MPs accelerating the process of its destruction. The last mechanism have not yet been reported. These mechanisms initiate nanoplastics formation, which increases particles mobility in the aquatic environment and their threat to water organisms. At the same time, the fouling with diatoms (with a silica shell) and the sorption of heavy elements increase the bulk specific density of MPs and contribute to its accumulation in bottom sediments.</p><p>The study was supported by the Russian Science Foundation grant number 19-17-00035.</p>

BACKGROUND Semen analysis is an integral part of work up for infertility in men, with sperm morphology being an important qualitative parameter. Qualitative defects can affect any part of the sperm and are classified as defects in the head, middle piece, and tail, based on morphology. The focus of the study was to assess qualitative defects in sperms by light microscopy, in semen with normal sperm counts. METHODS This study is hospital based, descriptive, retrospective study. Of the semen samples received in the clinical laboratory, fifty with normal sperm counts were included in the study and processed according to standard protocol. For evaluation of qualitative defects by sperm morphology, smears were fixed in ethanol, stained with Papanicolaou stain [PAP], and assessed under light microscope. RESULTS The 50 semen samples included in the study had sperm counts ranging from 15 to 80 million / ml. Thirty samples had less than 10 % abnormal forms, fourteen samples had 11 - 20 % abnormal forms, five samples had 21 - 30 % abnormal forms and one sample had 40 % abnormal sperms. Qualitative defects were classified as morphological abnormalities in head, neck, and tail. Of the fifty cases, most defects were found in the head, followed by those in the neck and tail. Common defects noted were double head (44 %), abnormal sized heads, and bent neck (48 %). Coiling was a common defect noted in the tail (10 %). Most sperms showed a combination of defects. CONCLUSIONS Qualitative defects in sperm morphology are often seen in samples with normal sperm counts. Assessment of microscopic characteristics of human spermatozoa is as important as count and motility in the complete evaluation and work-up of semen samples in cases of infertility. Objectives The defining of the normal parameters of spacious relations and symmetry of the ventricular system of the brain depending on the gender and age is currently one of the topical research problems of clinical anatomy. The present research aims to identify the correlation between the morphometric parameters of the fourth ventricle of the brain and the shape of the skull in middle aged people. Design This is a prospective cohort study. Setting This study was set at the Trinity School of Medicine. Participants A total of 118 normal computed tomography scans of the head of people aged from 21 to 86 years (mean age—48.6 years ± 17.57) were selected for the study. Main Outcome Measures The anteroposterior, transverse diameters, and height of the fourth ventricle were measured and compared in dolichocranial, mesocranial, and brachycranial individuals. Results The study has shown the presence of a statistically significant difference between morphometric parameters of the fourth ventricle of the brain in dolichocranial, mesocranial, and brachycranial individuals. Conclusion The morphometric parameters of the fourth ventricle of the brain, such as height, anteroposterior, and transverse diameters, depend on the individual anatomic variability of the skull shape and gender.

Infrared spectra of the surfaces of vanadium pentoxide and vanadium pentoxide containing 9.09 mol% caesium and potassium, as sulphates, have been determined after exposure to 2-propanol for various times. Interpretation of the spectra leads to the proposal that the principal source of catalyst activity may be associated with surface hydrogen and hydroxyl groups on V5+ and V4+ sites. The "stability" of the catalysts towards reduction by the alcohol was consistent with the activity series derived from kinetic measurements: V2O5 (pure) < V2O5 (Cs) < V2O5 (K). The degree of sample reduction has also been assessed qualitatively by measurements of the ratio of surface area before to that after reaction and the same catalyst sequence was established. The trend in surface area ratios was similar to that shown by the surface "Tammann" temperatures of vanadium pentoxide and alkali metal sulphates which has been taken to imply that the ease and (or) extent with which the sulphates enter into inter-solid reactions with the oxide in the preparation stage may exert influence on the subsequent reducibility of the individual members of the catalyst series.

Expected mean values and a range of normal values (plus or minus two standard deviations) are presented for the vital capacity and the maximum breathing capacity of male children and adolescents. It is recommended that calculations of the above values be based upon four attributes (age, height, weight, and body surface area) rather than upon a prediction deriving from a single attribute (especially in the individual who does not have a standard height and weight for his age).

Abstract Background Prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM) after aortic valve replacement (AVR) may affect survival but data are conflicting. It is assessed by relating effective orifice area (EOA) to body surface area (EOAi). EOA is patient-specific as the result of flow-velocity times area at the individual patient's outflow tract levels (LVOTA) divided by trans-prosthetic flow velocity. However, some studies use projected EOAs (i.e., valve size associated EOAs from other patient populations) to assess how PPM affects outcome. Methods We analyzed 76 studies addressing hemodynamic outcome and/or mortality after bioprosthetic AVR. Results In 48 studies, projected or measured EOA for calculation of EOAi and PPM assessment was used (of which 25 demonstrated an effect on survival). We identified 28 additional studies providing measured EOA values and the corresponding Bernoulli's pressure gradients after AVR. Despite EOA being a patient-specific parameter, 77% of studies assessing a PPM impact on survival used projected EOAs. The 28 studies are providing measured EOA values and the corresponding Bernoulli's pressure gradients in patients after AVR showed a highly significant, linear relationship between EOA and Bernoulli's gradient. Considering this relationship, it is surprising that relating EOA to body surface area (BSA) (EOAi) is standard but relating pressure gradients to BSA is not. Conclusion We conclude that the majority of studies assessing PPM have used false assumptions because EOA is a patient-specific parameter and cannot be transferred to other patients. In addition, the use of EOAi to assess PPM may not be appropriate and could explain the inconsistent relation between PPM and survival in previous studies.
