The mega construction of Yogyakarta International Airport aims to increase global interaction in Yogyakarta. The existence of an airport in a region should be important. Furthermore, the airport is also able to show the identity of a region itself. The airport can also be a landmark, which is able to represent the cultural values of people in a region. The Special Region of Yogyakarta, which is broadly known as a cultural and educational province, has thousand of cultural values in its local wisdom. This research aims to describe (1) the local wisdom contained in Yogyakarta International Airport, and (2) the values of that local wisdom. Earlier, we have identified the condition of Yogyakarta International Airport, in order to create a research plan for this research. However, we found the main data, namely local wisdom in the airport’s building. From that fact, we formed research questions and set the main theory to classify and analyze them. We collect the data under the method of Simak Catat. According to the data, we set Haryanto (2014) theory as the main theory. In order to collect valid and reliable data, we also conduct a deep interview with Andika as an interviewee from PT. Angkasa Pura I is the coordinator of Yogyakarta International Airport. The results show that there are eighteen local pearls of wisdom in Yogyakarta International Airport, and the values of that local wisdom are triggered by the socio-cultural aspect. Kearifan Lokal di Yogyakarta International AirportAbstrakPembangunan Bandar Udara Yogyakarta International Airport bertujuan untuk meningkatkan hubungan global yang selama ini telah dilaksanakan di Yogyakarta. This article describes a 3-year research project to develop an applications model to successfully integrate technology in the instruction of elementary school learners with mild and moderate handicaps. The model is based on decision theory and focuses specifically on the decisions of in-school agents (i.e., students, regular classroom teachers, instructional support personnel, and administrators). Decisions of these agents are considered with respect to four decision areas ( i.e., identification of content, instructional methods and arrangements, organization of instruction, and outcome assessment). Twenty research questions have been identified and clustered into five elements that represent the beginnings of an applications model. These five elements are: (1) software reference to the curriculum and IEP objectives, (2) integrated instructional activities, (3) collaborative planning, (4) student self-management, and (5) teacher training and support. Finally, this article provides a framework for understanding future project efforts as well as an orientation to the theoretical underpinnings of the research plan.

The concept of work in Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) specifically in Songkhla province of Thailand is highlighted in this paper. The study assumed that the meaning of work in NGOs is different from other types of organizations such as business and governmental organizations. NGO operations are seen to be different in terms of their goals when compared to those organizations. Even though research on work had been widely conducted in the business as well as the governmental sectors worldwide, few studies on this issue had been done in the NGO or non-profit sector. The concept of work in NGOs needs to be explored further in order for interested parties to get a true understanding of the nature of work in NGO sector. The research questions posed in this paper relate to how and why the work in NGOs influences the NGO professionals. The objective of this paper is to present some findings based on an in-depth study on the meaning of work in NGOs. This study consists of two core aspects of work: subjective and objective aspects. The respondents in this paper were 16 professionals (i.e. university graduates) selected from five local NGOs in Songkhla province of Thailand. This study used a mixed method within qualitative approach comprising in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and secondary documents. This study showed that the NGO professionals had given high values on the subjective aspects of work because they were seeking fulfillment from work, while the objective aspects of work were seen to be less important to them.

In this chapter, the juxtaposition and interconnection of deductive and inductive research methods are explored. Qualitative, inductive empirical tools are discussed in depth, specifically in-depth interviews, focus groups, and field observation. Students will learn how these methods are used to generate hypotheses, which can ultimately be tested using deductive research methods. The structure of inductive research questions, and how they differ from deductive research questions, is further addressed, as is how a researcher “makes sense” of qualitative data.

This article describes how smartphones have converged into multifunctional personal devices. Smartphones are equipped with features such as Internet access, cameras (pictures and videos) and MP3 players. While a majority of previous research investigated the use and effects of mobile phones and young people, these studies focused on the Western context. A qualitative research method was used to investigate the research questions. Specifically, focus groups and in-depth interviews were used to collect data. Nevertheless, while a growing number of studies has investigated mobile phone use by teenagers in non-western countries, there is little research on smartphone uses and their implications to teenagers in an Islamic context. This article examines the uses of smartphones by, and their implications to, Bruneian teenagers. The research seeks to map and understand the complex forces that influence and challenge the socio-cultural values and religious beliefs of teenagers in a non-Western, Malay, Islamic society such as Brunei.

The Danish word lige [ˈliːə] is a highly culture-specific discourse particle. English translations sometimes render it as “please,” but this kind of functional translation is motivated solely by the expectation that, in English, one has to ‘say please’. In the Danish universe of meaning, there is in fact no direct equivalent of anything like English please, German bitte, or similar constructs in other European languages. Consequently, Danish speakers cannot ‘say please’, and Danish children cannot ‘say the magic word’. However, lige is in its own way a magic word, performing a different kind of pragmatic magic that has almost been left unstudied because it does not correlate well with any of the major Anglo-international research questions such as “how to express politeness” or “how to make a request.” This paper analyzes the semantics of lige in order to shed light on the peculiarities of Danish ethnopragmatics. It is demonstrated not only that Danish lige does a different semantic job than English please, but also that please-based and lige-based interactions are bound to different interpretations of social life and interpersonal relations, and reflect differing cultural values.

This paper is an empirical and analytical study of the uses of written feedback by Moroccan high school EFL teachers. It tries to investigate how EFL teachers in Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi high school respond to students’ compositions. Strong emphasis is laid on the types of teacher written feedback, with a focus on integrated feedback (form and content) as an effective way to respond to students’ written work. The ultimate goal of this paper is to ascertain the types and forms of teacher written feedback prevalent amongst Moroccan EFL high school teachers. In this light, the study seeks to investigate the following research questions: (1) Which types of written feedback do Moroccan high school EFL teachers employ to respond to students’ compositions? (2) Which forms of written feedback do Moroccan high school EFL teachers’ employ to respond to students’ compositions? To answer these questions, the present study used a mixed method approach that included: classroom observation checklist, document analysis of corrected writing productions and students’ questionnaire. The key findings illustrated that teachers at Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi high school relied heavily on form-focused feedback. It also revealed that teachers opted for correction symbols and commentary.
