Purpose Coastal and floodplain areas are on the frontline of climate change in Bangladesh. Small-scale coastal and floodplain fishing communities of the country face a host of cross-scale stressors continually, some induced by climate change, and they have developed coping and adaption strategies based on customary social and experiential learnings. This paper aims to examine the coping and adaptation strategies that small-scale fishing communities undertake in the face of stresses including climate change and variability. Design/methodology/approach This research takes a nuanced ethnographic-oriented approach based on around two-year-long field study in two coastal and floodplain fishing villages, represented by two distinct ethnic groups. The study adopts direct observational methods to denote the ways small-scale fishing communities address the arrays of stressors to construct and reconstruct their survival and livelihood needs. Findings It was observed that fishers’ coping and adaptation strategies comprise a fluid combination of complex overlapping sets of actions that the households undertake based on their capitals and capabilities, perceptions, socio-cultural embeddedness and experiential learnings from earlier adverse situations. Broadly, these are survival, economic, physiological, social, institutional and religiosity-psychological in nature. Adaptation mechanisms involve some implicit principles or self-provisioning actions that households are compelled to do or choose under given sets of abnormal stresses to reach certain levels of livelihood functions. Originality/value Based on empirical field research, this paper recognizes small-scale fishers’ capability and adaptability in addressing climate change-induced stresses. Policymakers, international development planners, climate scientists and social workers can learn from these grassroots-level coping and adaptation strategies of fishing communities to minimize the adverse effects of climate change and variations.

Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. Data were analyzed by scoring respondents' answers based on provided statements. The results showed that fishers did not agree that arad is not environmentally friendly, while the trap is. Fishers are also against arad prohibition and refuse to use traps as a replacement. Furthermore, fishers who received traps are still very dependent on arad and use traps only for alternative fishing gear. Recommendations for the policy of arad prohibition are arad should be allowed with special regulation, and further education is required for fishers to understand the correlation between unselective fishing gear and environmental damages. Recommendations for the environmentally friendly fishing gear program are that the provision of traps should be continued with several adjustments following fishermen's preferences. Keywords: Prohibition of arad, environmentally-friendly fishing gear, traps.

Through deepening of the literature review, in-depth interviews, observations, and focus group discussions were conducted with local fishing communities in the coastal area of Sabang Island, finally found some research results that made reference to the adaptation strategies that fishermen community carried to the impact of ecosystem changes through local wisdom. The results show that Sabang Island fishermen communities who have felt the impact of ecosystem changes such as mangrove damage, coral reefs due to exploitation of coastal resources and natural disasters can achieve the success of solving the problem in several ways either through knowledge about adaptation made by fishing communities obtained from academic knowledge, or through knowledge that has been entrusted in a downward manner known as local wisdom. Therefore, fisherman adaptation strategies in addressing the impacts of ecosystem change follow a pattern of reactive adaptation, they tend to use capabilities from within the community. This adaptation pattern is carried out by developing job diversification, modifying the fleet of boats and taking action with the community in rehabilitating damaged ecosystems and the role of commander laot to the fishermen in arranging the time of catching with the natural sign through the knowledge of inheritance as local wisdom that needs to be maintained all the time. Keyword: Fisherman Society, Adaptation, ecosystem change, local wisdom.
