Introduction: Simulation of nursing care in patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI) requires a method that is high fidelity. This study aims to determine the impact of Virtual Reality Simulation (VRS), as a learning method, on the improvement of cognitive abilities of undergraduate nursing students in conducting nursing care of the ARI case. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with pre and post-test on the control and intervention group. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, with a total of 27 respondents divided into nine respondents in each group, including the control group (group A)  intervention group (Group B and C). There were three different methods in the implementation of VRS as learning activities. Data were analyzed by ANCOVA test. Results: The results showed a significant impact on the application of VRS as a learning method with p <0.05 (0.025). Conclusion: This significant impact was obtained in the implementation of VRS as a stand-alone learning method.

Purpose The use of Virtual Reality (VR) in health professions education has increased dramatically in recent years, yet there is limited evidence of its impact on educational outcomes. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of VR anatomy instruction on the ultrasound competency of novice learners participating in a ultrasonography workshop. Method We designed a VR-enhanced ultrasonography training program and utilized a plane transection tool to interact with a three-dimensional (3D) VR model of the human body which facilitated the 3D conceptualization of the spatial relationship of anatomical structures, leading to faster and better development of ultrasonographic competency. This was a randomized control study which enrolled third-year medical students (n = 101) without previous exposure to formal or informal ultrasonography training. The participants were randomly divided into an intervention and control group. We assessed participants’ competency through ultrasound performance stations on live subjects, we also measured anatomical and ultrasound image identification ability using multiple choice tests. Result Participants in the intervention group (median = 16; interquartile 13 to 19) had significantly higher scores in ultrasonography task performance tests than the control group (median = 10; interquartile 7 to 14; Mann-Whitney U = 595; P < 0.01). In sub-group analysis, the intervention group performed significantly better in the six out of ten ultrasound tasks. Participants in the intervention group also had greater improvement in ultrasonographic image identification MCQ tests than the control group (Mann-Whitney U = 914; P < 0.05). Conclusion This study suggests that VR-enhanced anatomical training could be of significant benefit in ultrasonography training by promoting a better understanding of the spatial relationships of anatomical structures and the development of early psychomotor skills transferable to the handling of ultrasonographic probes.

Abstract Objective The natural learning experience from infancy to emerging adulthood, when considerable cognitive and functional growth is observed, mandates learning multiple real-world skills simultaneously. The present studies investigated whether learning multiple real-world skills simultaneously is possible in older adults and also whether it improves both their cognitive abilities (working memory, episodic memory, and cognitive control) and functional independence. Method Over two studies (15 and 27 participants), older adults learned at least three new skills (e.g., Spanish, drawing, music composition) simultaneously for 3 months. Participants completed cognitive and functional assessments before, during, and after the intervention in both studies. Participants were recruited sequentially for an intervention or no-contact control group in Study 1, and Study 2 included only an intervention group, who also completed assessments 4–6 weeks prior to the start of the intervention (i.e., they served as their own control group). Results Results from both studies show that simultaneously learning multiple skills is feasible and potentially beneficial for healthy older adults. Learning multiple skills simultaneously increased cognitive abilities in older adults by midpoint of the intervention, to levels similar to performance in a separate sample of middle-aged adults, 30 years younger. Discussion Our findings demonstrate the feasibility and potential of conducting a real-world skill-learning intervention involving learning three novel skills with older adults. Our multiskill intervention may provide broad cognitive gains, akin to the benefits experienced earlier in the life span.

BACKGROUND Cardiac arrest is an acute and important emergency situation. The acquisition of cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills for nursing students has received special attention in the educational courses. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to determine the impact of mobile application learning on the nursing students' skills about the cardiopulmonary resuscitation. METHODS This pre-test and post-test design with a control group was carried out in 2018 on 64 undergraduate nursing students who recruited by the census method. The skills were investigated and compared before, one and three months after the education between intervention (received traditional education plus mobile-application based learning) and control groups (traditional education). Data was collected using a modified checklist of skills assessment. RESULTS According to the findings, compared to the control group, students' skills in the intervention group significantly increased one and three months after the education (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The mobile application learning was effective in improving students’ skills for confronting with cardiac arrest patients.

Simulation-based learning is an effective technique for teaching nursing students’ skills and knowledge related to patient deterioration. This study examined students’ acquisition of theoretical knowledge about symptoms, pathophysiology, and nursing actions after implementing an educational intervention during simulation-based learning. A quasi-experimental study compared theoretical knowledge among two groups of students before and after implementation of the intervention. The intervention introduced the following new components to the existing technique: a knowledge test prior to the simulation, video-recording of the performance, and introduction of a structured observation form used by students and facilitator during observation and debriefing. The intervention group had significantly higher scores on a knowledge test conducted after the simulations in comparison to the scores in the control group. In both groups scores were highest on knowledge of symptoms and lowest on knowledge of pathophysiology; the intervention group had significantly higher scores than the control group on both topics. Students’ theoretical knowledge of patient deterioration may be enhanced by improving the students’ prerequisites for learning and by strengthening debriefing after simulation.

Background: Attention to patients’ spirituality, as a moral obligation of care, is now widely accepted in nursing practice. However, until recently, many nursing programs have paid little attention to spirituality. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the impact of two different curricula, used to teach undergraduate nursing students, on increasing nursing student awareness of spirituality in the care of patients. Research design: A quasi-experimental post-intervention two-group design was conducted in 2009–2010 and 2010–2011 academic years. Participants and research context: The study included a total of 130 volunteer senior-year students. The students were assigned as “the intervention group/integrated system” that were informed about spirituality or as “the control group/traditional system” that received no information on spirituality. Data were collected via a personal information form and the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale was used to assess responses. The study was conducted at the Department of Nursing of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Cumhuriyet University, in Central Anatolia/Turkey. Ethical considerations: Permission to conduct the study at the nursing school was obtained from the schools’ management teams. The rights of the participants were protected in this study by obtaining informed consent. Findings: The results revealed that the intervention group had a higher mean score on the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale than did the control group. The students in the intervention group defined the terms of spirituality and spiritual care more accurately than did the control group students. Discussion: Nurses are professionally and ethically responsible for providing spiritual care. Nurses’ competence in meeting the spiritual needs of their patients should be improved by undergraduate education on spiritual care. Nursing scholars reported a significant difference in the knowledge and attitudes toward spirituality of nursing students as a result of the integration of spirituality into the undergraduate nursing curriculum. Conclusion: Spirituality should be more widely included in nursing education.

ObjectiveTo develop a virtual reality simulation training programme, and further verify the effect of the programme on improving the response capacity of emergency reserve nurses confronting public health emergencies.DesignA prospective quasiexperimental design with a control group.ParticipantsA total of 120 nurses were recruited and randomly divided into the control group and the intervention group.InterventionParticipants underwent a 3-month training. The control group received the conventional training of emergency response (eg, theoretical lectures, technical skills and psychological training), while the intervention group underwent the virtual reality simulation training in combination with skills training. The COVID-19 cases were incorporated into the intervention group training, and the psychological training was identical to both groups. At the end of the training, each group conducted emergency drills twice. Before and after the intervention, the two groups were assessed for the knowledge and technical skills regarding responses to fulminate respiratory infectious diseases, as well as the capacity of emergency care. Furthermore, their pandemic preparedness was assessed with a disaster preparedness questionnaire.ResultsAfter the intervention, the scores of the relevant knowledge, the capacity of emergency care and disaster preparedness in the intervention group significantly increased (p<0.01). The score of technical skills in the control group increased more significantly than that of the intervention group (p<0.01). No significant difference was identified in the scores of postdisaster management in two groups (p>0.05).ConclusionThe virtual reality simulation training in combination with technical skills training can improve the response capacity of emergency reserve nurses as compared with the conventional training. The findings of the study provide some evidence for the emergency training of reserve nurses in better response to public health emergencies and suggest this methodology is worthy of further research and popularisation.

Background and Aim: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is known as an autoimmune disease and a chronic inflammatory condition, inducing a wide variety of mood affective disorders, including depression and feelings of hopelessness in many aspects of patients&rsquo; quality of life (QoL). In view of the positive side effects of spirituality and spiritual care on finding appropriate strategies for further adaptation, this study aimed to determine the impact of group spiritual care (GSC) on levels of hope in patients suffering from MS. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was conducted on a total number of 96 patients with MS, referring to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) in the city of Zahedan, Iran. Following sample selection via the convenience sampling technique, the patients meeting the inclusion criteria were randomized into two groups, i.e., intervention and control. The data collection tools for this purpose included a demographic information form and the Adult Hope Scale (AHS, Snyder et al. 1991), completed by the subjects at the pre- and post-intervention stages. As well, the intervention group received five sessions of GSC during three weeks but the control group members only talked over daily issues along with their mental health problems. The data were also analyzed using the SPSS Statistics software (ver. 14). Results: The Kruskal-Wallis test results revealed that the GSC intervention could have a significant positive effect on raising hope in the patients with MS (p&lt;0.001). Moreover, a significant growth was observed in the scores of hope dimensions including agency and pathway (p&lt;0.001). Conclusion: GSC can effectively boost levels of hope in patients suffering from MS in all dimensions. Therefore, it is recommended to utilize this type of care in order to nurture hope in such individuals.

BACKGROUND: The spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread throughout the world and has created a level of fear, uncertainty that has an impact on several aspects of life including mental health. The rapid spread of the Corona Virus or COVID-19 throughout the world has damaged the order of life starting from the economy, social, politics, education, culture, religion and health. Various efforts have been made by the Indonesian government with social distancing or physical distancing, washing hands with soap and staying active at home. Conditions that change suddenly will make people unprepared to deal with it, especially in the psychological condition of the Indonesian people who experience a lot of anxiety. AIM: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of mindfulness meditation based on spiritual care on the level of community anxiety due to the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This type of research uses experimental quantitative research using a randomized controlled trial research design. This research was conducted for 4 weeks in January-February 2021. The population of this study is the Surabaya community. The sampling technique used consecutive sampling technique and was divided into two groups, namely the intervention group as many as 61 respondents and the control group as many as 61 respondents. Data analysis used paired t test and independent t test with a significance value of p < 0.05. This research questionnaire uses the DASS 42 questionnaire has reliability 0.82 and the validity test gets the Cronbach alpha value is 0.85. RESULTS: The average level of anxiety before doing the spiritual care-based mindfulness meditation intervention in the intervention group was 17.28 (severe anxiety) and 17.18 in the control group (severe anxiety) with p = 1.000 which means there is no difference in the average level of anxiety whereas After being given the intervention, the average level of anxiety in the intervention group was 6.03 (normal anxiety) and 18.06 in the control group (severe anxiety) with p = 0.000, which means that there is a difference in the average level of anxiety in the intervention group and the control group after being given the intervention. CONCLUSION: Mindfulness meditation based on spiritual care can reduce people’s anxiety levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hypertension during pregnancy may lead to a serious condition called preeclampsia.Health cadre should be provided with information concerning identification of such risk. This study aimed to identify the impact of guidebook of pregnant woman with preeclampsia on knowledge and attitude in pregnant women in health cadre. The study design was quasi-experimental withnon-randomized pretest-posttest group control approach. This study involved 60 health cadres whom were assigned into two groups, intervention group (n= 30) and control group (n= 30) and recruited through purposive sampling technique. The results suggest that there was significant difference in health cadre’s attitude between both groups (p= 0.000). Variable of duration being a cadre is the most determinant factor affecting cadre’s attitude. Health promotion through guidebook of pregnant woman with preeclampsia was effective in improving health cadre’s attitude. Authors recommend health cadres to use the guidebook of pregnant woman with preeclampsia when enacting their duties.

AbstrakPeningkatkan mutu asuhan keperawatan di rumah sakit memerlukan restructuring, reengineering, dan redesigning sistem pemberian asuhan keperawatan melalui implementasi Model Praktik Keperawatan Profesional (MPKP). Tujuan penelitian ini ialah untuk menilai dampak implementasi MPKP terhadap mutu asuhan keperawatan di rumah sakit. Disain penelitian adalah kuasi eksperimen dalam bentuk pre and post test with control group. Uji statistik yang digunakan adalah uji Chi-square dan uji t. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada kelompok intervensi (MPKP) terdapat peningkatan kepuasan klien dan keluarga (OR=114,24) yang lebih besar dibandingkan dengan peningkatan kepuasan klien dan keluarga pada kelompok kontrol (OR=3,78). Demikian juga terdapat peningkatan kepatuhan perawat terhadap standar yang lebih tinggi pada kelompok intervensi (OR=235,5) dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol (OR=0). Lama hari rawat lebih pendek pada kelompok intervensi. Angka infeksi nosokomial juga lebih rendah pada kelompok intervensi dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa implementasi MPKP dapat meningkatkan mutu asuhan keperawatan di rumah sakit. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, untuk memicu implementasi MPKP di berbagai rumah sakit, disarankan agar implementasi MPKP menjadi salah satu kriteria penilaian pada akreditasi rumah sakit khususnya pelayanan keperawatan AbstractIn order to improve the quality of nursing care in the hospital, nursing care delivery system need restructuring, reengineering, and redesigning through the implementation of Professional Nursing Practice Model (PNPM). The study was aimed to evaluate the impact of the PNPM on the quality of nursing care in the hospital. The design used was quasi experiment in pre and post test with control group. The statistic used are Chi-square and t-test. The result showed that in the intervention group, the improvement of client/family satisfaction with nursing care (OR = 114,28) was higher than the improvement in the control group (OR = 3,78). It was founded there was an improvement of the compliance of nurses to the standard was higher in the intervention group (OR = 235,5) compare to control group (OR = 0). The length of stay shorter in the intervention group, and also the nosocomial infection rate is lower in the intervention group compare to control group. The study concluded that the implementation of the PNPM could improve the quality of nursing care in the hospital. Based on this result, in order to challenge the implementation of PNPM in the hospital it was suggested that the implementation of PNPM becomes an evaluation criteria for hospital accreditation specifically for nursing service.
