In the present investigation, the preliminary phytochemical analysis and antioxidant potential of hexane, chloroform, acetone and methanol extracts of Haloxylon salicarnicum, Ochradenus arabicus and Tamarix nilotica were reported. The presence of flavonoid, alkaloid, phenols, terpenoids, carbohydrate, tannin, protein, steroids, saponin, phlobatannin, cardiacglycoside, anthraquinines and volatile oils were determined and for antioxidant activity, DPPH, ABTS, superoxide anion radical and hydroxyl radical scavenging potential were studied. Strong presence of alkaloid, tannin, steroids in H. salicarnicum, flavonoid and phenols in O. arabicus and saponin T. nilotica were observed. In the present investigation, all the extracts inhibited the free radicals the methanol extract of O. arabicus was identified as potential crude extract compared to all other extracts with the IC50 values of 91.65 (DPPH), 94.62 (ABTS), 95.82 (O2) and 96.02 (OH) µg/mL. Whereas, the IC50 value of the standard, Gallic acid were 125.25 (DPPH), 142.32 (ABTS), 130.78 (O2) and 139.93 µg/mL (OH). Whereas, the IC50 value of the standard, Gallic acid were 125.25 (DPPH), 142.32 (ABTS), 130.78 (O2) and 139.93 µg/mL (OH)The present study suggests that methanol extract of O. arabicus can be used for the isolation potential natural antioxidant.

A phenolic acid had been isolated from chloroform soluble fractions of a methanol extract of stem bark of Syzygium litorale, Fam. Myrtaceae. The structure of the isolated compound was elucidated and established as gallic acid through extensive spectroscopic studies (UV-Vis, FTIR, and NMR) and by comparison with literature data and authentic sample. This is the first report of the isolation of compound from this plant, although it has previously been found in Myrtaceae family such as S. aromaticum, S. cumini, S. polyanthum, S. cordatum, etc. The chloroform fraction, isolated compound, and vitamin C showed very strong antioxidant activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) with IC50 value of 23.2, 7.5, and 12.5 mg/mL, respectively.

Background: Antioxidants are small molecules that prevent or delay the process of oxidations caused by highly reactive free radicals. These molecules are known for their ability to protect various cellular architecture and other biomolecules from oxidative stress and free radicals. Thus, antioxidants play a key role in the prevention of oxidative damages caused by highly reactive free radicals. Method: In the present study, a series of previously synthesized heterocyclic 2-aryl-4(3H)-quinazolinone derivatives 1-25 was screened for antioxidant activity by employing in vitro DPPH and superoxide anion radical scavenging activities. ROS inhibitory activities were also evaluated by serum-opsonized zymosan activated whole blood phagocytes and isolated neutrophils. Cytotoxicity studies were carried out by employing an MTT assay against the 3T3 cell line. Results: Most of the 2-aryl-4(3H)-quinazolinone derivatives showed potent antioxidant activities in superoxide anion radical scavenging assay with IC50 value ranging between 0.57 µM – 48.93 µM, as compared to positive control quercetin dihydrate (IC50 = 94.1± 1.1 µM ). Compounds 5, 6, and 14 showed excellent activity in DPPH assay. Compounds 5-8, 12-15, 17, and 20 showed promising activities in the ROS inhibition assay. All compounds were found to be non-cytotoxic against the 3T3 cell line. Structure antioxidant activity has been established. Conclusion: It can be concluded that most of the heterocyclic 2-aryl-4(3H)-quinazolinone derivatives 1-25 are identified as promising antioxidant agents that are capable of fighting against free radicals and oxidative stress. Thus, they can serve as a lead towards treating oxidative stress and related pathologies.

Objective: In the present study, the essential oil, methanol extract, and methanol fractions (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol) obtained from Commelina nudiflora were investigated for the free radical scavenging effects and phytochemical analysis.Methods: The antioxidative effect of the essential oil, methanol extracts and methanol fractions were evaluated using 2, 2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined using Folin-Ciocalteau and aluminium chloride reagents respectively. The phytochemical analyses of the essential oil, methanol extracts and methanol fractions were performed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GCMS). Results: The antioxidant, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents of butanol, ethyl acetate and chloroform fractions were higher followed by methanol extract, hexane fraction and essential oil. Phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of alkaloid, saponin, steroid, phytosterols, triterpenoids and tannins etc. The identified bioactive constituents of essential oil, methanol extract and methanol fractions of C. nudiflora were indole, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, 2-pentadecanone, 6,10,14-trimethyl, phenol, benzyl alcohol, eugenol, phenol, 2, 4-bis (1,1-dimethylethyl), hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester (palmitic acid ester), n-hexadecanoic acid (palmitic acid), 9, 12-octadecadienoic acid, (linoleic acid) and phytol. All identified bioactive compounds and their derivatives were generally reported with antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties.Conclusion: The obtained data suggest that the essential oil, methanol extract and methanol fractions of C. nudiflora possess remarkable antioxidant activities and vital phytochemicals. Thus the plant can be a utilized as a potential source of nutraceutical with antioxidant activity.

Free radicals are molecules that lose electrons in their outer orbitals so that the number of electrons becomes odd and unstable. Free radicals can damage various macromolecule cells including proteins, carbohydrates, fats. Antioxidants are compounds that can donate one or more electrons to free radicals. Avocado leaves contain high bioactive components that can be used as a source of natural antioxidants. Avocado leaves that have been dried, mashed and then shifted with methanol. The extracts were tested by phytochemical screening, including flavonpoid, phenolic, tannin and antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhidrazyl) method. This method is based on the reduction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) against free radicals which causes a change from purple to yellow 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) (DPPH). From the research, the IC50 values ​​in avocado leaves were 118.8056 µg / mL and 7,276 µg / mL on ascorbic acid as a positive control. From the IC50 value obtained, it is known that the methanol extract of avocado leaves has strong antioxidant activity to fight free radicals.

Soybean (Glycine max) and soy milk residue (okara) are protein-rich materials. Soybean possesses the highest protein content among different types of beans (protein content of soybean varies from 40–42 %). Soy milk residue, a by-product of the soy milk manufacturing industry, contains approximately 27 % protein (by dry weight). A number of recent studies have investigated the improvement of functional properties of protein contained in soybean and okara by fermentation or by the use of proteolytic enzymes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activities of soybean and okara hydrolysates obtained by the fermentation with Aspergillus oryzae or by using proteolytic enzymes (neutrase and flavourzyme). DPPH radical scavenging assay was used to determine the antioxidant activities of hydrolysates. The concentration of peptides required to scavenge DPPH radical by 50 % (IC50 value) was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of peptides produced obtained from hydrolysates. The results showed that when fermented with A. oryzae, the okara hydrolysate had higher antioxidant activity than the soybean hydrolysate, with IC50 values of 0.447 mg/ml and 3.95 mg/ml, respectively. The hydrolyzed okara obtained from hydrolysis using Neutrase had higher antioxidant activity than the one obtained from hydrolysis using Flavourzyme, with IC50 values of0.200 mg/ml and 0.407 mg/ml, respectively. Different peptide fractions obtained from the hydrolysates using cut-off membrane (10 kDa, 3 kDa and 1 kDa) possessed different antioxidant activities. The < 1 kDa peptide fraction exhibited the highest antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 0.158 mg/ml.

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds of for Lamiaceae: Salvia officinalis, Satureja calamintha, Mentha pulegium and Marubium vulgare using ferric reducing power (FRAP) and radical scavenging method (DPPH). Preliminary phytochemical analysis shows that the major constituents of crude extracts (Hydromethanolic, hydroacetonic) are tannins, saponins, quinones, flavonoids, terpenoids and reducing compounds in the four plants. In quantitative analysis, variable polyphenols, flavonoids and condensed tannins content are recorded. The highest polyphenols content is that of the aqueous/methanol crude extract of Salvia officinalis (188.92 ± 1.19 mg GAE/ gE), followed by aqueous/acetone crude extract of Mentha pulegium (176.55 ± 2.49 mg GAE/gE). Flavonoids and condensed tannins content of crude extract showing a high content in aqueous/methanol extract of Mentha pulegium and Satureja calamintha (93.64 ± 0.26mg EQC/gE and 25.44 ± 0.71 mg EQC/gE), respectively. Scavenging activity of the free radical DPPH, revealed that the aqueous/methanol extract of Salvia officinalis shown a relatively high antioxidant activity (IC50 = 1.07 μg/ml) compared with ascorbic acid (IC50 = 0.91 μg/ml). FRAP method revealed that the extracts of Mentha pulegium showed the highest power to reduce iron (EC50 = 0.147 mg/ml), but lower than that of ascorbic acid (EC50 = 0.057 mg/mL).

Objective: Four different extracts of Araucaria columnaris (bark peel) and Cosmos sulphureus (flowers) were screened for their phytochemical composition, and free radical scavenging activities.Methods: DPPH method was used to test the antioxidant activity for extracts.Results: Among the different extracts tested, the methanol extract of both the plant species showed significant radical scavenging activities. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts revealed that the radical scavenging activities might be due to the presence of flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds.Conclusion: The results obtained suggest that Araucaria columnaris (bark peel) and Cosmos sulphureus(flowers) could be exploited in the treatment of various diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infection diseases.

Ocimum sanctum, commonly known as Tulasi in Nepal, is a pharmacologically important plant due to its active constituents. In this work, extraction was carried out in hexane, chloroform and methanol solvents and their phytochemical screening was performed. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the plant were measured by Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method and aluminum chloride colorimetric method respectively. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, polyphenols, terpenoids, tannins and steroids are mainly found in the extracts. Based on the result obtained, the plant posses a significant amount of total phenolic and total flavonoid content. Both phenolic and flavonoid contents were highest in methanol extract, followed by chloroform and hexane extract. Antioxidant activity of the extracts as ascorbic acid standard (IC50 value = 41.34 µg/mL) was in the order of methanol extract (IC50 value = 47.73 µg/mL) > chloroform extract (IC50 value = 79.46 µg/mL) > hexane extract (IC50 value = 94.68 µg/mL). The extent of the antioxidant activity of the plant is following the number of total phenolics and flavonoids present in it.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the major flavonoids content and bioactivities of Tartary buckwheat sprouts. The crude methanol extract (ME) of Tartary buckwheat sprouts was abundant in flavonoids, and six major flavonoids, including isoorientin, vitexin, isovitexin, rutin, quercetin, and kaemferol were successfully determined from the sprouts by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Generally, the flavonoid content of buckwheat sprouts was in the order of rutin > quercetin > isovitexin > vitexin> isoorientin > kaemferol. The highest rutin content of the ME and sprout cultures was 89.81 mg/g and 31.50 mg/g, respectively. Antibacterial activity results indicated the ME displayed notable inhibitory activity against the five tested bacteria, and its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranged from 0.8 mg/mL to 3.2 mg/mL. Among the six flavonoids, quercetin was the most active compound, which exhibited strong activity against all tested bacteria except for E. coli and S. epidermidis, with its MIC values ranging from 0.2 mg/mL to 0.4 mg/mL. For the antifungal activity assay, the ME of Tartary buckwheat sprouts and four flavonoids could significantly inhibit the spore germination of two pathogenic fungi, and their inhibitory efficiency was concentration dependent. Quercetin was the most active one, which significantly inhibited the spore germination of F. oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum and F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, and its median effective inhibitory concentration (IC50) value was 42.36 and 32.85 µg/mL, respectively. The antioxidant activity results showed that quercetin, kaemferol, and rutin displayed excellent antioxidant activity in the DPPH radical scavenging test, and their IC50 value was calculated as 5.60, 16.23, and 27.95 µg/mL, respectively. This is the first report on the antimicrobial activity of the crude extract of Tartary buckwheat sprouts. These results indicated that the methanol extract of Tartary buckwheat sprouts could be used as a potential antimicrobial or antioxidant agent in the future.

Thaumatoccocus daniellii Benn (Benth.) is an organic food wrapper that influences the color and flavour of most foods processed and packaged with it. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the phytochemical constituent and antioxidant activity of T. daniellii leave. Quantitative phytochemical analysis was carried out using standard procedures while antioxidant activity was assayed using 2’,2’diphenylpicrylhydrazine (DPPH) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP). Results showed that T. daniellii leaves contained flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids and saponins. Furthermore, aqueous leaf fraction had higher quantity of polyphenols (0.41 ± 0.1 mg% gallic acid) and flavonoids (0.28 ± 0.1 mg% quercetin) than polyphenols (0.23 ± 0.3 mg% gallic acid) and flavonoids (0.11 ± 0.1 mg% quercetin) in hexane leaf fraction. Investigation of antioxidant activity revealed that 100 - 500 mg/ml aqueous leaf fraction exhibited a significantly (P<0.05) higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than the hexane leaf fraction. In addition, the aqueous fraction of T. daniellii leaves exhibited a significantly (P<0.05) higher ferric ion reducing potential than hexane leaf fraction. Thus, data from this study indicated that T. daniellii leaves color and flavour enhancing properties could be attributed to the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids. In addition, its use as food wrapper may introduce phyto-antioxidants into foods processed and packaged with T. daniellii leaves.
