This text proposes a theoretical approach of the biographical genres from the field of Literary journalism, having in perspective the discursive possibilities involved in this narrative construction. The “writing of oneself” and the “writing of the other” pass through frontiers of discourse in which Literary journalism, as it has been conceived in the contemporary world, also moves. To improve this debate, we bring the knowledge of Narrative and New History theories, in which there is an intense discussion about the work that unites objective data of reality and the capacity to elaborate a discourse that deepens in subjectivities. Our central argument is that Literary journalism, when articulated with biographical texts, can contribute to the theorizing and production of works of these genres.Este texto propõe uma abordagem teórica dos gêneros biográficos a partir do campo do jornalismo literário, tendo em perspectivas as possibilidades discursivas envolvidas nessa construção narrativa. A escrita de si e a escrita do outro transitam por fronteiras do discurso em que o jornalismo literário, tal como tem sido concebido na contemporaneidade, também se movimenta. Para aprimorar este debate, trazemos os conhecimentos de teorias da narrativa e da nova história, em que há uma intensa discussão acerca do trabalho que une dados objetivos da realidade e a capacidade de elaborar um discurso que se aprofunda em subjetividades. Nosso argumento central é o de que o jornalismo literário, quando articulado com os textos biográficos, pode contribuir para a teorização e produção de trabalhos desses gêneros.Este texto propone un abordaje teórico de los géneros biográficos a partir del campo del periodismo literario, teniendo en perspectiva las posibilidades discursivas involucradas en esa construcción narrativa. La “escritura de sí” y la “escritura del otro” transitan por fronteras del discurso en que el periodismo literario, tal como ha sido concebido en la contemporaneidad, también se mueve. Para perfeccionar este debate, traemos los conocimientos de teorías de la narrativa y de la nueva historia, en que hay una intensa discusión acerca del trabajo que une datos objetivos de la realidad y la capacidad de elaborar un discurso que se profundiza en subjetividades. Nuestro argumento central es que el periodismo literario, cuando se articula con los textos biográficos, puede contribuir a la teorización y producción de trabajos de esos géneros.

This article is about Angelika Neuwirth’s thought, dialectical of Qur’anic interpretation. She offer new view to understanding of Qur’an’s meaning. Neuwirth encourage to reunderstanding Qur’an post-canonization (a written text) with pre-canonization method (oral communication), as in Surat Al-Ikhlas. Accourding Neuwirth, Surat Al-Ikhlas responded from tradition and civilization of Arabic region earlier. An example أَحَدٌ (Q.112:1) is similiar meaning with “ehad” in Ibrani language. That’s mean usage أَحَدٌ had purpose to negotiation strategy and universality of faith. therefore Islamic religion has mission to combine all ideology of faith become unity universality. Neuwirth encourages to refer to the other holy scripture for adding comprehensive information and objective data.

Frankfurt School critical theory is perhaps the most significant theory of society to have developed directly from a research programme focused on the critique of political authoritarianism, as it manifested during the interwar decades of the 20th century. The Frankfurt School’s analysis of the persistent roots – and therefore the perennial nature – of what it describes as the ‘authoritarian personality’ remains influential in the analysis of authoritarian populism in the contemporary world, as evidenced by several recent studies. Yet the tendency in these studies is to reference the final formulation of the category, as expressed in Theodor Adorno and co-thinkers’ The Authoritarian Personality (1950), as if this were a theoretical readymade that can be unproblematically inserted into a measured assessment of the threat to democracy posed by current authoritarian trends. It is high time that the theoretical commitments and political stakes in the category of the authoritarian personality are re-evaluated, in light of the evolution of the Frankfurt School. In this paper, I review the classical theories of the authoritarian personality, arguing that two quite different versions of the theory – one characterological, the other psychodynamic – can be extracted from Frankfurt School research.

Imam Al-Ghazali used a combination of the wisdom, exposure and experience he had acquired while running the Nizamiyyah colleges to contribute to the core of the theory knowledge, education and Islamic sciences. His ideas suggest that God is the primary source of knowledge and sense alone cannot deliver one to the ultimate truth. He categorised knowledge according to the needs of the society. Knowledge according to him should shape an individual and help him/her to interact with the creator and with the other existents. Knowledge should affect body and soul, mind and heart and ultimately deliver one to happiness here and in the hereafter. His views on the core values of Islam affecting both individuals and society can be employed in determining and redefining the philosophy of knowledge in our contemporary world. The brief on the philosophy of knowledge reflected in here as well as the method of teaching and instruction especially in the Islamic institutions is drawn from Al-Ghazali’s rich reservoir of experience. This literature can be used to develop teaching and learning models and polices in developing Islamic academic institutions especially in Uganda.

This chapter discusses the problem of language in Levinas’s philosophy regarding methodology. Ethics, for Levinas, happens in everyday speech, where the Other demands a response from me. How he describes this relation presents methodological problems for Levinas, because it is resistant to any kind of theoretical approach, including phenomenology. Any writing about ethics, including Levinas’s, would immediately be its betrayal. This chapter describes Levinas’s account of language in Totality and Infinity, the issues that remain there, which it highlights through Blanchot’s and Derrida’s discussion of Levinas’s work. It also outlines a different way of thinking about the alterity of Other that is suggested in Totality and Infinity but comes to the fore in Otherwise Than Being, which is not as an opposition between speech and the visible, but enunciation (the saying) and the sayable (the said).

In this paper, author deals with Heidegger's account of the modern age as the epoch based on Western metaphysics. In the first part of the paper, he shows that, according to Heidegger, modern interpretation of the reality as the world picture, is essentially determined by Descartes' philosophy. Then, author exposes Heidegger's interpretation of the turn which already took place in Plato's metaphysics and which made possible Descartes' metaphysics and modern epoch. In the second part of the paper, author explores Heidegger's interpretation of science and technology as shoots of very metaphysics. Heidegger emphasizes that the essence of technology corresponds to the essence of subjectivity and shows how the metaphysics of subjectivity subsequently finds its end in Nietzsche's metaphysics of the will to power, as the last word of Western philosophy. In the concluding part, author argues that the contemporary processes of globalization can be just understood as processes of completion of metaphysics. They can be identified as a global rule of the essence of technology. On the basis of Heidegger's vision of overcoming metaphysics, author concludes that it opens the possibility of a philosophy of finitude which points to dialogue with the Other as a way of resolving the key practical issues of the contemporary world.

Sufism as a spiritual life was frequently to be a return place for the tired man because of his life journey and an escape place for the pressed man. Beside that, actually sufism can strengthen the week individuals missing his self-existance. By sufism, they found the real meaning of life. In the teachings of sufi order, the seeker (salik) has to pass through spiritual path (thariqah) in order to know Allah as the Final Goal by passing a long journey and spiritual stations (maqamat) to improve their bad characteristics. This is significant to do for salikin, especially to make his inner empty, and then adorn and decorate it with all of good characteristics to reach higher and higher stations (maqamat). In the other hand, they found a religious-psycological experiences which is called ahwal to achive the spiritual experiences with Divine Reality (Haqiqah).

This article examines both 4 and 5 Ezra as two textual reactions to Roman imperialism utilizing Homi Bhabha's notion of ‘hybridity’. The central argument offered here is that 4 and 5 Ezra both exemplify resistance to and affiliation with the discourse of dominance integral to imperial ideology. Such reactions are, however, inverted. On the one hand, 4 Ezra primarily offers a theodicean resistance to the destruction of the Second Temple during the First Jewish Revolt (66–70 CE), but relies upon essentialized binaries integral to a colonial discourse of domination. On the other hand, 5 Ezra advances a notion of religious replacement in the aftermath of the Bar Kokhba revolt (132–135 CE); an expression of dominance that is simultaneously a strategy of communal preservation arising from a position of proximity to a Jewish heritage.

Over the last decades, the applications of the active noise control system are broadened. In this study, the active noise control is modeled to reduce the noise pass through an open window. The objective is to define a suitable location for the control sources and error microphones to achieve more noise level reduction at the other side of the window. The performances of the active noise control system are calculated for two different arrangements: (1) the control sources on the edge of the opening and (2) the control sources distributed on the surface of the window. Furthermore, two cost functions are considered to model the noise control system including the minimization of the total squared pressure at cancellation points and the minimization of sound intensity at the surface of the aperture.

When Stuart Hall died in 2014, many tributes and memorial activities were planned by organisations, institutions and publications that felt they owed him a debt. New Formations was no exception, and the editorial board spent some time reflecting on an appropriate tribute. Stuart himself, as many of us knew, had little interest in seeing his work codified or memorialised for its own sake. But there was one injunction that many of us were familiar with from that work, his example, and from frequent personal and political conversations with him. The importance of thinking about 'the conjuncture', of 'getting the analysis right', was one that Stuart frequently emphasised to his students and interlocutors. The importance of mapping the specificity of the present, of situating current developments historically, of looking out for political threats and opportunities, was always at the heart of Stuart's conception both of 'cultural studies' as a specific intellectual practice, and of the general vocation of critical and engaged scholarship in the contemporary world. This is double-issue is the first of two volumes of New Formations to be dedicated, in Stuart's honour, to the understanding of this conjuncture. This introductory essay/editorial considers the relationship between 'cultural studies' and 'conjunctural analysis' as specific types of intellectual practice, before proposing a specific analysis of our present 'conjuncture', in dialogue with the other contributors to this volume.

People with a logical turn of mind say that the history of the world can be summarised in a sentence. A précis of mediaval historian Richard William Southern's work made in that spirit would identify two characteristics, one housed inside the other, and both quite apart from the question of its quality as a work of art. The first is his sympathy for a particular kind of medieval churchman, a kind who combined deep thought about faith with practical action. This characteristic fits inside another, touching Southern's historical vision as a whole. Its genesis is traceable to those few seconds in his teens when he ‘quarrelled’ with his father about the Renaissance. The intuition that moved him to do so became a historical fides quaerens intellectum. Reflection on Southern's life work leaves us with an example of the service an historian can perform for his contemporary world, as a truer self-perception seeps into the common consciousness by way of a lifetime of teaching and writing, spreading out through the world (all Southern's books were translated into one or more foreign language).
