<p><em>Fast food consumption including used of repeated heating-oil, causing various of health problems, especially the formation of free radicals characterized by elevated MDA levels. Pomegranates have many therapeutic functions, especially as antioxidants that scavenges free radical of oxidative stress thus improving the quality of spermatozoa. The aim of this study was to see the effect of pomegranate juice to reduce oxidative stress and improve sperm motility. This study used 24 rats divided into 4 groups, namely KN, KP, JD1 and JD2. The mean MDA content (nmol / ml) in KN, KP, JD1 and JD2 was 23.35; 8,53; 12.15; and 12,83 followed by Kruskal-Wallis test obtained p value 0,021 (p &lt;0,05). The quality of spermatozoa includes the motility of spermatozoa which distinguished 4 criteria: fast moving spermatozoa and straight forward (criteria 1), spermatozoa move slowly / difficult to go straight (criteria 2), street spermatozoa (criteria 3) and immobile spermatozoa (criteria 4). Mean percentage (%) number of spermatozoa criteria 1 on KN, KP, JD1, and JD2 among others 41,6; 18.2; 38; and 62.2. Mean percentage (%) number of spermatozoa criteria 2 on KN, KP, JD1, and JD2 among others 4,4; 21.8; 15.6 and 14.2. Mean of percentage (%) motility of spermatozoa criteria 3 on KN, KP, JD1, and JD2 among others 10.6; 24.8; 11.2 and 15.2, while for criteria 4 is 21.8; 37.2; 40.4; and 13.8. Statistical test for sperm motility using ANOVA one way, on criteria 1, 2, 3 and 4 each got p value 0,000; 0.010; 0,000; and 0.000, which means the administration of pomegranate juice shows the effect on the motility of spermatozoa.</em></p>

Abstract The protective effect of L-carnitine (LC) on the oxidative stress (OS) injury and the effect of L-carnitine on follicular stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) of ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) were investigated. OS was induced by treatment with H2O2. We cultured KGN cells in four groups: the blank group, OS group and two L-carnitine pretreatment group (low, high). In the OS group, cell nuclear pyknosis was observed, mitochondria swelled irregularly and their cristae were fractured. Meanwhile, the cell viability, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) contents, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and the level of FSHR expression were significantly decreased in the OS group. However, malonaldehyde (MDA) content, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and apoptosis rate were significantly increased. Compared with the OS group, the morphology of cells and mitochondria in the L-carnitine pretreatment group were improved, the cell viability and the expression of FSHR was significantly increased, and the OS level was decreased. These results indicated that L-carnitine can protect the cells from OS damage induced by H2O2, enhance the antioxidant and anti-apoptotic ability of GCs, and alleviate the decrease of FSHR expression on GCs caused by OS. Therefore, L-carnitine may help prevent the ovarian aging and improve the quality of follicles.

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate: (i) the percentage of the New Zealand (NZ) population reporting fast food/takeaway food and restaurant/café food per day; (ii) examine demographic factors associated with their use; (iii) quantify their contribution to energy intake; and (iv) describe the specific types of foods reported from both sources.DesignTwenty-four hour diet recalls from the cross-sectional 2008/09 NZ Adult Nutrition Survey were used to identify fast-food and restaurant-food consumers.SettingNZ households.SubjectsAdults aged 15 years and older (n 4721).ResultsOverall 28 % reported consuming at least one fast food and 14 % a restaurant food within the 24 h diet recall. Fast-food consumption was not associated with level of education or an area-based measure of socio-economic status, but a higher education was positively associated with restaurant-food consumption. Individual factors such as ethnicity, household size, age, sex and marital status were found to be important influences on the use of fast food and restaurant food. Fast-food consumption was more prevalent among participants living in urban areas, young adults (19–30 years) and Māori compared with NZ European and Others. The most frequently reported fast foods were bread-based dishes, potatoes (including fries) and non-alcoholic beverages.ConclusionsGiven the high reported consumption of fast food by young adults, health promotion initiatives both to improve the nutritional quality of fast-food menus and to encourage healthier food choices would likely make a large impact on the overall diet quality of this group.

Aim: To evaluate the longevity and ameliorative activities of Moringa oleifera leaf (MOL) extract against some HAART drug-induced toxicities in Drosophila melanogaster. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted at the Drosophila laboratory, Africa Centre of Excellence in phytomedicine Research and Development (ACEPRD), University of Jos-Nigeria, between August 2019 - March 2020.  D. melanogaster (1-3 day) were first exposed for life to different concentrations of MOL (50 – 500 mg) or 25 mM Ascorbic acid or 1000 µL distilled water to determine longevity. Secondly, flies were fed on 46.56 mg of HAART drugs (Efavirenz-based or Dolutegravir-based) alone or supplemented with MOL 250 mg or 500 mg per 10 g fly food in five replicates for seven days. Afterward, longevity, fecundity, and negative geotaxis were evaluated. Also, activities of Superoxide dismutase, Catalase, as well as Malondialdehyde content as biomarkers of oxidative stress were evaluated using whole fly homogenate. Statistical significance was taken at P<0.05 or (P<0.006) (Bonferroni adjusted P-value for multiple curve comparisons.  Results: The MOL extract significantly (P<0.001) increased fly longevity compared to control groups. Similarly, supplementation with 500 mg MOL extracts significantly (P<0.05) ameliorate HAART drug-induced deficits in climbing ability, fecundity, SOD, and CAT activities as well as MDA content compared to groups exposed to HAART drugs alone respectively. Conclusion: The results suggest that   M. oleifera leaf extract extends lifespan and ameliorate HAART drug-induced toxicities via its antioxidant activities. This was supported by improved locomotor and reproductive decline, and restoration of the deficits in the biomarkers of oxidative stress (SOD, CAT, and MDA) in D. melanogaster.

INTRODUCTION: The present generation is the most frequently targeted consumers for the fast food marketers and can lead to various health related disorders in them.AIM: To assess the perceptions, fast food consumption and eating habits among students belonging to the allied health sciences in various corners of  India.MATERIALS AND METHOD: The study was an online, questionnaire based, cross-sectional study. The questionnaire was in English language, was pre-tested on 50 students and validated accordingly. The questionnaire was based on a 5-point Likert-type scale [(1) strongly disagree, (2) disagree, (3) neutral, (4) agree, and (5) Strongly agree]; had 19 questions and required approximately four minutes for completion. Data was analysed using SPSS version 21.0 and the student’s t-test and multiple logistic regression was applied keeping the p value as 0.05.RESULTS: The study comprised of 1020 complete responses; out which males formed a majority (52.3%) and most students belonged to the 2nd year of their study (49.1). High mean ± SD scores pertaining to perception  were obtained in four questions. While assessing the eating habits, high mean ± SD scores were obtained in three questions. Multiple logistic regression based on gender revealed that females has a significant difference on both perception (0.01) and consumption(p-0.03) habits in relation to fast food as compared to males, while the year of study was significantly associated with the food consumption habits (p=0.01) of the students.CONCLUSION: Universities and institutions need to educate and motivate students on the importance of healthy eating to reduce the burden of disease among such students.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) juice is well recognized for its high content of phytochemicals with proven health-promoting effects. Conventional processing techniques including clarification with fining agents, pasteurization and thermal concentration have significant influences on bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of the juice. The growing consumers demand for high-quality pomegranate juice as well as the industrial interest for the production of functional foods, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics from its bioactive compounds have promoted the interest for minimal processing technologies. In this context, membrane-based operations represent an innovative approach to improve the overall quality of pomegranate juice production. This review focuses on the recent advances and developments related to the application of membrane technology in pomegranate juice processing. Conventional pressure-driven membrane operations and innovative membrane operations, such as osmotic distillation and pervaporation, are discussed in relation to their potential in juice clarification, fractionation, concentration and aroma recovery. Their implementation in integrated systems offer new opportunities to improve the healthiness and quality of the juice as well as to recover, purify and concentrate bioactive compounds for the formulation of functional ingredients.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Baduanjin exercise on oxidative stress, antioxidant status and quality of life in middle-aged women. A quasi-experimental design was adopted. Subjects were 31 middle-aged women. Subjects completed a supervised and standardized Baduanjin exercise program 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Malondialdehyde (MDA) level was measured and determined by using a spectrophotometer for oxidative stress. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) was measured for the antioxidant status. A 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was used to evaluate changes in quality of life. All outcome measures were collected before intervention and at the end of a 12-week intervention. The results suggest that there are significant differences in serum SOD level with Baduanjin exercise. SOD level was significantly increased after exercise ( p < 0.05). Baduanjin exercise contributed significantly to antioxidant status on these samples. However, a reduction in MDA level was observed. The t-test value was 2.03 with a p-value of 0.052. The changes may be meaningful at a 5% level. There are significant improvements in quality of life after the exercise program. Subjects had greater improvements in 4 dimensions of SF-36, namely physical function, body pain, social function and general mental health ( p < 0.05). In conclusion, Baduanjin exercise has beneficial effects on improving quality of life, increasing antioxidant enzymes and reducing oxidative stress in middle-aged women. Reduction of MDA level may be more attributable to the increase in the antioxidant enzyme SOD.

Background: The permanent cessation of menstrual periods in menopause causes a decline in estrogen levels and increased oxidative stress. Both of these factors lead to menopausal symptoms, cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis in the postmenopausal females that negatively affect the quality of their lives. Antioxidant properties of Nigella sativa are due to its natural ingredient “thymoquinone” and have been studied in various animal and human studies. This study was done to determine beneficial effect of nigella sativa. Material and Methods: Thirty postmenopausal females were recruited in the study after taking consent. Nigella sativa was administered at a dose of 1g/day for 2 months after breakfast. Blood sample was taken for pre and post treatment glutathione (GSH) estimation. The SPSS version 21 was used to analyze the data. Paired t- test was applied. P value of< 0.05 was considered significant.Results: Regarding the effect of the Nigella sativa on oxidative stress, result indicated a highly significant increase from baseline (p<0.0001) after 8 weeks’ consumption of Nigella sativa. The effect size was calculated both for biochemical parameter GSH and general parameter like weight and BMI. The result of the effect size calculation showed larger effect size for GSH levels (3.9) and moderate sized effect for weight and BMI.Conclusion: Nigella Sativa showed beneficial antioxidant effects in post-menopausal females and might be responsible for a better quality of life in these women.

Fast-food consumption has been a staple for many people; however, due to rising health concerns, there has been an increasing interest in the consumption of healthier food both in South Africa and elsewhere. Many consumers are demanding better quality foods that offer nutritional benefits. This global trend has led to fast-food outlets adding healthier food options to their menus. Limited literature exists on customer satisfaction with regards to the food quality of these healthier food options. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to determine the level of customer satisfaction with the food quality of healthier food options available at fast-food outlets in South Africa. The study followed a mixed method approach, whereby a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to students at a residential South African University. The results indicate that South African consumers are highly satisfied with the food quality of the healthier food options at fast-food outlets.

Intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) play a pivotal role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. Different noxious agents, among them also anticancer therapies, can impair intestinal epithelial integrity triggering inflammation and oxidative stress. A frequent complication of chemotherapy is gastrointestinal mucositis, strongly influencing the effectiveness of therapy, increasing healthcare costs, and impairing patients’ quality of life. Different strategies are used to treat gastrointestinal mucositis, including products from natural sources. Our study focused on the effect of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) juice extract on IEC-6 cells, both during inflammatory conditions and following treatment with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The polyphenolic profile of pomegranate juice was characterized in detail by Online Comprehensive two dimensional Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The evaluation of pomegranate juice extract in IEC-6 indicates a significant inhibition in proinflammatory factors, such as cytokines release, cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, and nitrotyrosine formation. Pomegranate also inhibited oxidative stress and adhesion protein expression. In 5-FU-treated IEC-6, pomegranate also inhibited both inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters and apoptosis. It promoted wound repair and tight junction expression. These results suggest a potential use of pomegranate as an adjuvant in the treatment of intestinal inflammatory and oxidative stress states, which also occur during chemotherapy-induced mucositis.
