Images of national characters and humorous characters of the Balkan peoples of South Slavia through the prism of their stereotypical reflection in modern anecdotes. This article reviews one of the small forms of folklore – anecdote and, more specifically, ethno-anecdote (ethnic joke) as a way of reflecting national specifics, national colour, a form of expression of the most characteristic features of the mentality and way of life of a certain people, nation, social group. Based on texts of anecdotes that are most typical and widespread in the area of the Slavic Balkans, the characteristics of representatives of the so-called “Serbo-Croatian dialect continuum” are explored. National specific qualities reflected in ethnic jokes and stereotypes are discussed. It is concluded that ethnic jokes, as a special thematic kind of anecdote, contain, among other things, important extralinguistic information and can become an objective source when studying the ethnolinguistic and culturological characteristics of a particular country and its inhabitants. Keywords: anecdote, national stereotypes, view of the world, Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Montenegrins, image, symbol, national character

The study of ethnic stereotypes from the linguistic standpoint involves their investigation on the basis of language material including their depiction in fictional texts. Of special interest is comic, in particular, ironic representation of national typical character features, one of the most striking examples in French literature is the novel „Les carnets du major Thompson“ („The Notebooks of Major Thompson“) by Pierre Daninos. The dominant comic means of the novel is humorous irony. This paper focuses on an analysis of linguistic peculiarities used by P. Daninos to create the effect of irony when describing the French and British stereotypes. Depicting national character peculiarities, the way of life, behaviour, habits and customs of the French in comparison with the British, Pierre Daninos uses a variety of lexico-semantic means (antonyms, evaluative adjectives, anglicisms), lexical and syntactic stylistic devices (metaphor, comparison, antiphrasis, hyperbole, oxymoron, chiasm, rhetorical questions, parenthetical constructions). Along with the special structure of narrative instances, integration of „character’s irony” and „author’s irony“, these linguistic means create an effect of irony in separate fragments and ironic tonality of the whole text. On the one hand, significant differences between the stereotypical features of two ethnoses are the source of irony of the novel, and on the other hand, it is the contradiction of the French national character himself. Irony is based mainly on exaggeration and opposition. The general comic tonality of the novel forms the effect of targeting irony not only on stereotypical images of French and British peoples, but also national stereotypes as such.

One of the mainstreams in linguistics at the end of the XXth - beginning of the XXIst century is a linguocultural modeling of linguistic consciousness and communicative behaviour, i.e. the creation of a certain linguocultural archetype. By itself, the term "linguocultural archetype" is an interdisciplinary concept of cultural linguistics, linguistic conceptology and linguistic personology. The authors of the paper consider a linguocultural archetype, on the one hand, as a set of indicators, which make it possible to find a recognizable image of some individual, and on the other hand, reveal the features typical for a social or ethnic group, which is a binding basis for the archetype. The linguocultural archetypes presented in the paper are considered as typified individuals from a certain ethno-social group; they are recognisable by their characteristic features of verbal and non-verbal behaviour and value orientation in the society. The paper deals with conceptual, figurative, value and associative features of British linguocultural archetypes such as "English policeman", and "knocker up".The important indicators of linguocultural archetypes in cognitive consciousness of people are recurrence, associativity and textuality. The recognisability of the linguocultural archetypes "English policeman" and "knocker up" is stipulated by the mentioning of these professions in films, works of writers and artists, as well as in mass media materials.

The article analyzes the phraseology of German and Ukrainian languages with a gastronomic component, which reflect the uniqueness of the worldview of Germans and Ukrainians; the role of gastronomic tokens in phraseology is considered; a study of "gastronomic" phraseological units in order to identify their national and cultural specifics. The activity of phraseologists was also analyzed and it was found that despite the significant number of works in this field, a large number of unresolved issues remain today. The relevance of phraseological research is determined by attention to the problems of national self-awareness, the need to find new approaches to the study of phraseological unit as a treasure trove of national connotations, as well as the specifics of the image in the phraseology of national mentality. The study of phraseology is due to the fact that the phraseological system of any language has national and cultural specifics. An object in a certain culture exists in a specific environment unique to that culture, has culturally conditioned associative connections. The study of phraseological units allows us to consider the full range of national connotations, and to trace the features of the national mentality of a nation, to show the differences and commonalities in culture. Gastronomy, along with language, is one of the most important tools for learning another culture. It is an important component of the mentality of nations. Gastronomy reflects the religious views, way of life and way of life of representatives of different nationalities. Food culture reflects national identity, cultural characteristics, customs and typical habits of society. Phraseologisms with a gastronomic component in German and Ukrainian have both in common and a number of differences due to the peculiarities of the mentality of the German and Ukrainian peoples. It is these common and distinctive features that we tried to show in our study. Phraseologisms of gastronomic discourse allow us to reveal the characteristic features of the reflection of the picture of the world, which is why it is so important to study them.

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has turned our own health and the world economy upside down. While several vaccine candidates are currently under development, antivirals with the potential to limit virus transmission or block infection are also being explored. Plant production platforms are being used to generate vaccines and antiviral proteins inexpensively and at mass scale. The following review discusses the biology and origins of the current coronavirus pandemic, and describes some of the conventional, synthetic, and plant-based approaches to address the challenge that it presents to our way of life.

AbstractNowadays, the world is shifting towards a more sustainable way of life, and product designers have an important part in this change. They have to eco(re)design their products to make them environmentally conscious throughout their lifecycle, and especially at their end-of-life (EoL). However, one can observe that synergy between product designers and recycling-chains stakeholders is lacking, mainly due to their weak communication. While many design-for-EoL approaches coexist in the literature, design from EoL must also be taken into account to fully develop a circular economy.RE-CYCLING is an innovative design approach that supports both design for and from EoL. This paper focuses on the recycling EoL-option and the validation of the associated indicators. To validate the design-for-recycling indicators, the recyclability of three smartphones is assessed. It is expected that indicators provide a similar score as none of them was designed to be recycled; results comply with expectations. In parallel, the convenience of using recycled materials in smartphones is analysed to validate our design-from-recycling indicators. It is found that the proposed indicators can indeed support designers integrating recycled materials in products.

Abstract Culture is a way of life. A recent correspondence emphasizes that it is a contributory factor in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, and this must be considered by each government around the world. However, I argue that various elements in culture do not need to stop or else it will create public outrage. I therefore propose a win–win solution for both parties with the inclusion of the church that can serve as a framework for the sake of public health. It is primarily based on a kind of behavior that is needed to be embodied by the involved groups—‘supportive’ government, ‘creative’ church and an ‘adaptive’ public. These essential behaviors of all groups are possible to embody for a successful implementation of public health.

Feasts of Merit are an important social way of life among different tribes in the world, especially in Southeast Asia. In Northeast India, the different Naga tribes were well-known for this practice before the advent of Christianity. However, among the Chakhesang Nagas, after the advent of Christianity, the practices of giving feasts continue to this day with minor modifications in terms of rituals and taboos while the symbolic meaning and values behind this practice are retained. The Feasts of Merit, among them, are intricately connected to their worldview, whereby the feast-givers distribute their wealth in terms of sacrificing mithun, buffalo, and/or other livestock, in consecutive feasts, and receiving in return a higher social rank and the right to wear a special shawl (“Feasts of Merit” shawl), variously known as hapidasa, elicüra, and thüpikhü and the right to adorn the house with special architecture (mithun and buffalo wood carvings on the wall, and to put up a horn at the pinnacle of the house front). This article discusses the “Feasts of Merit” shawl and how it is connected intrinsically to the ethos of the tribe, and in doing so it states that the Chakhesang feasts can be looked upon as gift economy.

AbstractHere, we report the recent discovery of 87 Neandertal footprints on the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula (Doñana shoreline, Spain) located on an upper Pleistocene aeolian littoral setting (about 106 ± 19 kyr). Morphometric comparisons, high resolution digital photogrammetric 3D models and detailed sedimentary analysis have been provided to characterized the footprints and the palaeoenvironment. The footprints were impressed in the shoreline of a hypersaline swamped area related to benthic microbial mats, close to the coastline. They have a rounded heel, a longitudinal arch, relatively short toes, and adducted hallux, and represent the oldest upper Pleistocene record of Neandertal footprints in the world. Among these 87 footprints, 31 are longitudinally complete and measure from 14 to 29 cm. The calculated statures range from 104 to 188 cm, with half of the data between 130 and 150 cm. The wide range of sizes of the footprints suggests the existence of a social group integrated by individuals of different age classes but dominated, however, by non-adult individuals. The footprints, which are outside the flooded area are oriented perpendicular to the shoreline. These 87 footprints reinforce the ecological scenario of Neandertal groups established in coastal areas.
