This study is aimed at comparing the antidiabetic and antioxidant potential of fenugreek and buckthorn which are commonly used in modulating diabetes in the Middle East. In this study, the antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of the aqueous extracts of the leaf and seed of fenugreek and buckthorn was tested in streptozotocin-induced diabetic male rats fed with a fat-rich diet for 8 weeks. Thirty-six male albino rats were divided into 6 groups ( n = 6 ); the 1st group was the negative control. Diabetes was induced in the other 30 rats using streptozotocin, which were then divided into 5 groups; the 2nd was the untreated positive diabetic group, the 3rd was treated with fenugreek leaf aqueous extract, the 4th was treated with the fenugreek seed aqueous extract, the 5th was treated with buckthorn leaf aqueous extract, and the 6th was treated with buckthorn seed aqueous extract. The positive control group showed an increase in blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin, liver function enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase, kidney indices, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low- and very-low-density lipoprotein, immunoglobulins, and lipid peroxidation and a decrease in high-density lipoprotein, albumin, and antioxidant activity. The histology of the liver and testes showed severe histopathological alterations. Rats of groups 4-6 that were treated with the aqueous extract of the leaf and seed extract of fenugreek and buckthorn showed improvement of all biochemical and histopathological parameters. The seed extract of fenugreek and buckthorn showed more antioxidant activity than their leaves.

Kersen leaves (Muntingia calabura L) contain metabolites such as alkaloids, anthrax, polyphenols, tannins, saponins and are rich in flavonoid components such as flavones, flavonones, flavan and biflavan which have antidiabetic activity. According to a study conducted by Apriyanti (2016), the ethanol extract of kersen (Muntingia calabura L) at a dose of 250 mg / kg BB significantly reduced blood glucose levels in male wistar rats. In this study aimed at determining IC50 ethanol extract of Muntingia calabura L as an inhibitor of α-glucosidase enzymes using ELISA reader. The method was divided into 3 category is 1 (sample extract), 2 (blank) and 3 (akarbose). Each group added 25 µL α-glucosidase solution (0.25 units / mL then measured using ELISA reader 405 nm. The results showed that the ethanol extract of kersen (Muntingia calabura L) had activity as an inhibitor of α-glucosidase enzyme with IC50 34,197 µg / mL and can be categorized as active.

Kapuk randu (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn.) merupakan salah satu tanaman yang memiliki banyak manfaat untuk masyarakat. Tanaman ini dimanfaatkan sebagai penahan tanah dari erosi, tanaman peneduh, bahan pengisi kasur dan pakan ternak. Saat ini biji kapuk randu banyak dikembangkan sebagai bahan obat kontrasepsi herbal. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui aktivitas ekstrak biji kapuk randu (Ceiba pentandra Gaertn.) terhadap perilaku kawin tikus (Rattus norvegicus) jantan. Rancangan yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan 4 kelompok perlakuan dan 8 ulangan yaitu P0 (aquades dan tween 80), P1 (0,07 mg/kg BB ekstrak biji kapuk randu), P2 (0,12 mg/kg BB ekstrak biji kapuk randu), P3(0,24 mg/kg BB ekstrak biji kapuk randu). Pemberian perlakuan ekstrak biji kapuk dilakukan selama 33 hari dengan pengamatan perilaku kawin dilakukan 3 hari sekali. Parameter yang diamati untuk menilai adanya perilaku kawin adalah jumlah kissing vagina, jumlah mount jumlah intromission. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak biji kapuk randu memberikan pengaruh yang nyata terhadap perilaku kawin tikus jantan yang ditunjukkan dengan menurunnya jumlah kissing vagina, jumlah mount dan jumlah intromission tikus jantan kelompok perlakuan.

Background: Diabetes is associated with chronic hyperglycaemia, long-term damage, dysfunction, and organ failure. This study aims to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of the twigs of Andrographis paniculata and its toxicological markers on Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic Albino rats. Methods: A total of thirty rats were randomly divided into five groups of six animals each. Non-diabetic animals were treated with distilled water as non-diabetic sham control group 1, while diabetic animals (group 2, 3, 4 and 5) were treated with 60 mg/kg bw STZ intravenous (iv) and 100 mg/kg body weight (bwt) of metformin orally for group 2, distilled water for group 3, and 250 and 500 mg/kg bwt of Andrograhis paniculata (A. paniculata) for groups 4 and 5, respectively. The animals were dosed for 28 days, after which they were sacrificed. Liver and kidney function tests as well as livid profile tests were used as the biomarkers of toxicological assessment. Fasting blood glucose was carried out weekly. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) was conducted on the 28th day of the antidiabetic assessment. Results: A. paniculata groups 4 and 5 were significant at different doses (p < 0.05) in reducing the blood glucose level in comparison with metformin. There were significant changes in total and direct bilirubin, total protein, potassium, triglyceride and inorganic phosphorus in 500 mg/kg bwt of the treated group in comparison with the metformin and diabetic group groups. A. paniculata at 500 mg/kg bwt is most effective for its antidiabetic and organ protecting effects.

The purpose of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory activity test of ethanol extract of lotus seeds in rats induced by carrageenan. The research method used was experimental. The object used in this study was male white rats. Observations were made for 6 hours and then the data were analyzed using the one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The anti-inflammatory activity test was carried out on the test animals which were divided into 5 groups, 3 each with the suspension test group with a dose of 200, 300, 400 mg/kg bw, the negative control group was the CMC Na 1% suspension and the positive control was diclofenac Na 2, 25 mg/kg bw. The results showed that the ethanol extract of the seeds of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera G) was proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect on carrageenan-induced male white rats at doses of 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg BW with the percentage value of inflammation inhibition at the 6th hour was 65.79, 74.65 and 80.77%, with the most effective dose in reducing anti-inflammatory drugs being 400 mg/kg bw. The ethanol extract of the seeds of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) has anti-inflammatory activity. Keywords: anti-inflammatory activity, Nelumbo nucifera, paw edema

Muntingia calabura is a medicinal plant broadly used in conventional therapeutic preparation of many pharmacological activities. In the present study, the Invitro antidiabetic property of Muntingia calabura leaves extracts was analyzed by using standard methods. An in vitro anti-diabetic study was done by inhibition of α-amylase and α - glucosidase enzymes. The phytochemical screening of Muntingia Calabura leaves revealed that the extract is rich in the secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, polyphenols and tannins. The in vitro antidiabetic capability of extracts such as Petroleum ether, Chloroform, Methanol and aqueous through α- amylase enzyme and alpha-glucosidase enzyme inhibition studies. The results of the present study concluded that the methanolic extract of Muntingia calabura exhibits 80% in α-amylase and 60% in alpha-glucosidase activity while compared to acarbose. The phytochemistry study portrays the antidiabetic activity of Muntingia calabura is due to the presence of polyphenols.

This study was conducted to compare the ameliorative effect ofNigella sativaand propolis methanol extract onstreptozotocin-induced diabetic male rats and treating diabetic nephropathy. Forty male Albino rats were divided into four groups; the first group was the negative control fed standard diet. The other 30 rats were injected withstreptozotocin to inducediabetes by a single intravenous injection and then divided equally into three groups; the second group was the positive diabetic control; the third and the fourth groups were treated orally with 20% w/wNigella sativaseeds methanol extract and propolis methanol extract (20% w/w), respectively. The rats of the second group showed increased glucose levels and lipid peroxide accompanied with reduction in superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione-S-transferase enzyme activities compared with the negative control. Carboxymethyl lysine, interleukin-6, and immunoglobulins were also increased as a result of diabetes. Kidney function parameters were also elevated, while potassium and sodium levels were decreased. Moreover, tissues of kidney and pancreas showed severe histopathological changes. Treating the diabetic rats withNigella sativaand propolis methanol extract in the third and fourth groups, respectively, ameliorated all altered biochemical and pathological examinations approaching the negative control. Propolis was more effective thanNigella sativa.

This study investigated the in-vitro antioxidant activity and antidiabetic effect of Muntingia calabura fruit extract by in-vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Muntingia calabura fruit was extracted with aqueous methanol by soxhlet extraction. The total phenols and total flavonoids contents were estimated and evaluated for antioxidant activities (DPPH, ABTS) and in-vitro antidiabetic activity by measuring their inhibitory activity on α-amylase and α-glucosidase levels. The findings showed that the fruit extract had high content of total phenol and exhibited moderate free radical scavenging activity. The fruit extract showed inhibitory effect on α-amylase [IC50Value =61.43 μg/mL] and α-glucosidase [IC50 Value=140.33 μg/mL] compared to standard acarbose. The fruit extract can be used as a potential source for the development of new hypoglycemic agents may be due to the presence of high phenol content.
