Background: Nutrition is the real determinant of human health. The development of children into healthy adults is dependent on their growth, in a healthy environment and having balanced nutrition. Objective: (1) To determine the association of nutritional status of children with their age, sex and socioeconomic status. (2) To compare the nutritional status of government school children and private school children. Study Design: Comparative cross-sectional. Settings: Study was conducted in two schools of Faisalabad, Pakistan. Government Girls high school, Punjab Medical College (PMC), Colony Faisalabad and The Smart School, Faisalabad. Duration: Eight months from Jan 01, 2020 – Aug 30, 2020. Methodology: The study was conducted on 200 children, including males & females, to compare weights and heights among government (government) and private (private) schools. Age groups ranging from 9 above to 14 years were being studied. The data was collected by taking anthropometric measures, height and weight, of the students. To assess the nutritional status, the anthropometric measurement of WHO 2007 reference was used as Weight for Age Z-score (WAZ), Height for Age Z-score (HAZ) and Body Mass Index (BMI) for Age Z-score (BAZ). Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation test were used for statistical analysis. Data was analyzed statistically by using SPSS version 20. Results: The weight of private school children (39.3400 ± 2.39199) was normal as they have adequate diet as compared to government school children (38.7500 ± 1.43812) while 2% children were over weighted. Height of private school children (147.7600 ± 5.04949) was more as compared to government school children (146.8100 ± 4.34310). Statistically Pearson Correlation between weight of private and government school’s children was highly significant, p=0.000, df= 1, CI= 95%. Demographic information with height and weight of the children were taken. Z-score was calculated and graphs were plotted. A value within ± 2 SD in these graphs was considered as normal. Conclusion: Socio-economic status affects the availability and quality of food. For under-weight Children, unhygienic and low-quality food/stuffs are the major contributing factors.

This paper compares nutrition intakes and nutritional status of school children from two public schools in neighbouring communities of Ghana with different school feeding programmes. One hundred and eighty-two caregiver and school-age child pairs were interviewed concerning socio-demographics, dietary practices, and food security in a cross-sectional design. The independent t-test was used to compare the contribution of the publicly funded Ghana School Feeding Programme and private School Feeding Programme meals to total daily nutrient intakes of the children. Predictors of nutritional status of the children were assessed using logistic regression models. The private school feeding programme contributed more energy, protein, and micronutrients as compared to the government school feeding programme. About two-thirds (67.0%) of the children were stunted, underweight, or anaemic. Child’s age was a significant predictor of stunting. Undernutrition was prevalent among children from both programmes. Improved quality of diet from the feeding programmes may contribute to addressing malnutrition in these children.

Background: Children are nature`s gift and fountain of life. They are future citizens and their health is nation`s wealth. There is a meaningful saying that ‘nation marches on tiny feet of young children and no nation without due love and attention paid to its children will lead to social and economic development. By promoting their good health we will be strengthening the development of the family, nation and world. As per National Family Health Survey IV, 38.4% children in India are stunted, 21% wasted and nearly 35.7% are under weight. Karnataka has a prevalence of stunting (36.2%), wasting (26%) and underweight (35.2%). The objective was assessment of nutritional status of primary school children of urban field practice area. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Maddy primary school located in Dorgalli, Urban field practical area, Chandabowdi, dept. of Community Medicine, Shri B.M. Patil medical college hospital and Research centre, Vijayapura. All children were assessed for nutritional status by taking anthropometric measurement like Height, Weight and also for nutritional deficiency disorders by detailed general physical examination. Analysis was done using frequency distribution, calculation of height for age, weight for age, weight for height and classified malnutrition according to IAP and Water low’s classification. Results: Around 57% of primary school children were found to be having less weight and/or height with respect to their age and sex. Conclusions: The present finding is going to affect the growth and development primary school age children who are more vulnerable for vicious cycle of malnutrition and infection. Regular monitoring of growth of primary school children and health education session for the mothers is going to be effective in prevention of malnutrition among the children.

Background: Under nourished adolescent girls are more likely to give birth to malnourished child when they become pregnant and deliver. Hence their nutritional status is of much more importance. Objectives were to study the nutritional status of adolescent girls, to study the correlates and determinants of nutritional status and compare it between government and private schools.Methods: A school based cross sectional study was carried out for a period of three months. This study was comparative in nature, comparing the adolescent girls from government and private schools. It was possible to study 74 and 97 adolescent girls from government and private schools respectively. Anthropometric measurements were recorded using standard guidelines.Results: There were only 4 cases (5.4%) of underweight and only 3 cases (4.1%) in government school. Similarly there was only one case (1.03%) of underweight and only 7 (7.2%) of the cases in the private school. The mean height was significantly less among the children from government school compared to the private school. But there was no difference between the mean weight and BMI of children from two schools.Conclusions: Prevalence of overweight and obesity was low in the present study. It was not found to be associated with education and occupation of parents and type of family.

Objective: Increased prevalence of elevated blood pressure in children and adolescents was associated with increased body weight and measures. Also, prevalence of elevated blood pressure varies between countries. This study is to investigate the prevalence of elevated blood pressure in Indonesian children and its relationship with bodyweight and anthropometric measures.Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 1010 elementary students aged 8–12 years (479 girls, 531 boys). The anthropometric measures and blood pressure were assessed. Elevated blood pressure (EBP) was determined if at the 90th percentile or above for gender, age, and height. Independent t-test, Chi-square, Pearson correlation, and multivariate logistic regression were applied. Significance was determined at p<0.05.Results: Overall prevalence of EBP was 28.8% (35.9% in girls, 22.4% in boys). BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), and abdominal skinfold had significant correlation with EBP. Elevated BP was higher in overweight and obesity than in normoweight (60.5% vs 39.5%, p=0.00). In girls, the OR of EBP for overweight and obesity were 2.33 (95% CI 1.40 - 3.87, p=0.03) and 3.44 (95% CI 1.98 - 5.99, p=0.00)  whereas in boys were 4.26 (95% CI 2.20 - 8.28, p=0.00) and 8.82 (95% CI 5.10 - 15.38, p=0.00).Conclusions: Prevalence of EBP in Indonesian school children aged 8-11 years was higher and more prevalent in overweight/obesity and in girls. Anthropometric measures were correlated with EBP.

Background: Healthy childhood is basis for healthy and productive adult life. Mortality in school age children is low but morbidity and physical defects constitute major problems. With this background the present comparative study was conducted to explore the nutritional and morbidity patterns among government run primary school children and private school children in Palghar district, Maharashtra.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted during March 2018 in both government school and other private school. Total 400 children studying in class 1 to 4 were included. A pre-designed and pretested questionnaire was used during the interview and clinical examination was carried out to study nutritional status and morbidity pattern among the school children.Results: Out of 400 children, 61 (15.25%) were underweight, 82 (20.5%) were stunted, and 8 (2.0%) were obese. Dental caries was commonest morbidity (55.25%). Two study subjects (1.0%) had suspect cardiac problems.Conclusions: Under-nutrition and morbidities are prevalent in present study. Periodic complete health evaluation should be planned for early diagnosis of nutritional and morbid health problems.

Background: Higher level of physical activity is associated with low mortality rates for both adults and children. Those who are moderately active on a regular basis have lower mortality rates than those who are least active.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in private and government schools of Mangalore city from October 2015 to July 2017, study population was between 13 and 15 years adolescents. Sample size of 1000 was been obtained by using Proportional probability sampling. A pretested validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Data entry was done in Microsoft Excel and data analysis was done in SPSS version 22.Results: Out of 1000 students, 130 was from government school and 870 from private schools. Physical activity level among government school children was found to be more than private school children (p<0.005). Government school children had more number of underweight students (70%) compared to private school children (37.5%).Conclusions: This study showed that more research is necessary to evaluate intermediate factors and to determine which interventions are likely to be most effective to prevent childhood and adolescent obesity.

Background: Dental caries is a public health problem in developing countries like India. Indian trends show increase in prevalence of dental caries over last five decades with prevalence of 50 to 60%. The present study was conducted to find out the prevalence of dental caries and to find out the associated risk factors for dental caries among 13- and 14-years school children in urban Chidambaram.Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out for the period of 3 months from October to December 2019. 136 students from one government and private school were selected conveniently. Data were collected using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire, which were analyzed using Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 23.Results: The prevalence of dental caries was found to be 58.8%. The prevalence of dental caries was found to higher among the boys (62.1%), lower socioeconomic class students (80.4%) and students studying in the government school (66.7%). There is significant association between frequency of brushing, rinsing of mouth after taking food, brushing technique, frequency changing of brush, duration of brushing and presence of dental caries. (p<0.001).Conclusions: Lack of awareness, poor oral hygienic practices are seemingly the contributing factors for the development of dental caries. Dental caries is a preventable disease which can be alleviated by creating community awareness through health education activities.

Introduction: Around 25% of the total population in Nepal is adolescents (10 to 19 years old). Nutritional programs in Nepal are targeted to young children and pregnant women but neglected among adolescent. Such approach may result poor nutritional status among them. This will lead to poor health outcome and poor academic performance among school children. Thus we aimed to study the nutritional status assessment of adolescent school children in Solukhumbu.Material and Methods: It was a cross sectional study conducted over a period of two and half months (May-July 2018) in a government school at Salleri, Solukhumbu, Nepal. Study participants are 192 students, both male and female, from the age group 10 to 17 years old. Body Mass Index and Height for age was determined by anthropometry. The interview was done by using structured questionnaires to elicit socio-demographic variables.Results: Among 192 students age 10-17 years old, 122(63.5%) were female and 70(36.5%) were male. The majority was Janajati 160(83.3%), Major religion was Hindu 99(51.6%) and Buddhist 93(43.2%), Agriculture was the major occupation of both parents. The literacy rate of the father is 63.2% and mother is 39.9 percent. The majority are underweight 53(27.6%), overweight 11 (5.7%) and obese 3(1.6%). Median Height for Age was 94 (±6.5) with a minimum of 76 and a maximum of 112 and 99(51.6%) are stunted.Conclusions: Stunting, underweight and overweight were prevalent among adolescent children in the school. The causes of these problems should be identified by doing further research and intervention should be done accordingly.

Abstract Background:Growth charts are an important method for evaluating a child's health, growth and nutritional status.Objective:To establish Lambda – Mu- Sigma (LMS) and Z score references for assessment of growth and nutritional status in Egyptian school children and adolescents.Methods:A total of 34,822 Egyptian school children and adolescents from 5 to 19 years were enrolled in a cross sectional randomized study from December 2017 to November 2019 to create LMS and Z score references for weight, height and body mass index (BMI) corresponding to ages. They were selected from different districts in Egypt. Apparent Healthy children with good nutritional history and not suffering from any chronic diseases were included in the study.Results:Egyptian children of both sexes (54.3% boys and 45.7 % girls) from 5 to 19 years old were studied. Then LMS and Z scores for weight for age, height for age, BMI for age of both sexes were represented in detailed tables and graphs. There was no statistically significant difference between the Egyptian Z score charts and the reference values of WHO for weight, height and BMI corresponding to age (P>0.05).Conclusion: This is the first national reference for growth and nutritional assessment using LMS and Z score charts in Egyptian school children and adolescents, this tool is essential for healthcare and research.Key words: Adolescent - Egyptian Z score -Growth parameters- Nutritional status-School children

Anthropometrics can be a sensitive indicator of health, growth and development in infants and children. Measurement of height, weight and nutrient intake are the reliable means to evaluate the nutritional status and it is very much in need. Nutritional status of a sample of 120 adolescent respondents, from Samastipur, district of Bihar were evaluated by anthropometric measurement & nutrient intake. The correlation coefficient between protein and government school adolescent weight (r=0.280) was significantly positive but height and BMI was not significant. The correlation coefficient between protein and private school adolescent weight (r=0.542) and BMI (r=0.500) was positively correlated and highly significant while height was not significant. The correlation coefficient of iron with height, weight and BMI of government school adolescent was not significant. But in private school correlation coefficient of iron with weight (r=0.448) and BMI(r=0.421) was positive and highly significant. Therefore this study suggests that the Anthropometric assessment and nutritional intake of adolescent students in Bihar should further be done for coming to a conclusion.
