ABSTRACT CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Brazil has the fifth largest population of obese individuals in the world. Women’s magazines publish a large number of diet plans, and therefore the objective of this study was to assess the quality of these plans. DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive study. METHODS: We included the Brazilian women’s magazines of highest circulation published between January and June 2014 that advertised diets for weight loss on their covers. We extracted the quantities of macro and micronutrients from each of these diet plans and compared these quantities with the World Health Organization nutritional guidelines for adult women. We also checked the total energy quantities of these plans, and any recommendations about water intake and physical activity. RESULTS: We identified 136 potentially eligible magazine issues; 41 were excluded and 95 issues of 6 different magazines were included in the study. We found that 83.1 % of the plans had carbohydrate and fiber levels below the recommendations. On the other hand, the protein and saturated fatty acid levels were above the recommendations in 97.8% and 95.7% of the plans, respectively; 75.7% of the diets had inadequate calcium levels and 70.5% had low iron levels. Only 30 plans specified the total daily quantity of dietary energy and in 53.3% of these, the information was inconsistent with our estimates; 20% of the plans had no recommendations on daily water intake and 37.5% did not give recommendations regarding physical activity practices. CONCLUSION: The diet plans for weight loss featured in Brazilian women’s magazines are of low quality.

Background: Hope is important for patients with end-stage renal disease receiving haemodialysis (HD) and hope is associated with quality of life (QoL). Studies examining hope among the HD population are limited and, as far as the authors know, have not been undertaken in Jordan. Aims: To examine levels of hope and QoL and to examine the association between hope and QoL in HD patients in Jordan. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used. A convenience sample of 202 patients from six different dialysis centres was recruited. The World Health Organization QOL-BREF and the Herth Hope Index were used. Findings: Moderate levels of hope (M=32.3±4.1) were reported. Respondents reported low mean scores for the physical domain of QoL (M=48.3±21.1) but not for the psychological and social relationship domains. Higher hope scores were associated with better QoL. Conclusion: The findings suggest a positive relationship between the level of hope and QoL in people receiving HD. Encouraging hope while caring for HD patients in clinical settings may improve their QoL. Understanding the relationship between hope and QoL may help healthcare providers to improve the quality of care for patients and their families.

Background: The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on 11 March 2020, due to the number of newly reported confirmed cases and the rapid increase in deaths. Therefore, countries around the world limited their population to policies such as “social distancing” or “staying at home” to prevent the spread of the virus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in lifestyle pre and post the outbreak COVID-19 among older adults in South Korea and to identify the impact of lifestyle differences on depression and quality of life. Methods: An online single questionnaire covering sociodemographic data, lifestyle details, depression status, and quality of life level was distributed using mailing lists and social media. To assess lifestyles differences in older people pre and post the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the online single questionnaire was used post COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the participants’ memories, they responded lifestyles at two time points (pre and post COVID-19 pandemic). Results: The results showed that there was a significant decrease in physical activity and activity participation during the pandemic. In terms of nutrition, there was no statistically significant change pre and post the outbreak COVID-19, except for the intake of protein, fat, and vitamins. Additionally, the results showed that the resulting lifestyle differences seem to have had a negative impact on depression and quality of life among older adults in South Korea. Conclusion: There was a significant difference the lifestyle patterns among the participants in South Korea between the current period and pre COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it is observed that these differenced lifestyles were associated with depression and quality of life among the participants. Our findings may help to develop public health programs that support healthy lifestyles in pandemic conditions.

Background. Thalassemia is one of the most common genetic hematologic disorders in the world. Despite outstanding achievements in prenatal diagnosis and a decrease in the number of patients, thalassemia is still a significant issue in most parts of the world, especially in the Mediterranean countries. Understanding the factors associated with this condition is crucial to help clinicians and policymakers provides social and medical support for patients to facilitate their lives. This study aims to appraise the quality of life (QoL) and its related paraclinical factors in Iranian transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients. Methods and Materials. This study is a cross-sectional study performed in the thalassemia clinic of Imam-Ali Hospital, Karaj, Iran. The demographic, clinical, and laboratory data of 100 patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia were recorded. The patients’ QoL was measured by the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instruments Brief (WHOQOL-BREF) version questionnaire. The results were analyzed using SPSS software. Results. This study demonstrated that all four features of life are influenced in transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients. Also, higher educational status and lower serum ferritin levels were associated with better scores in assessing the QoL. On the other hand, an elevated level of AST (aspartate transaminase), ALT (alanine transaminase), and FBS (fasting blood sugar) are associated with lower scores. Conclusion. All features of QoL are correlated to the patients’ laboratory findings. Our data suggest that managing patients’ laboratory indices is attributed to their higher QoL. We also suggest regular screening of patients’ QoL to manage disease complications more efficiently.
