This paper aims to illustrate that Sufism does not fully lead to scepticism and passivity in fighting for the benefit of Muslims. Sufism was originally a zuhud (ascetic) movement in Islam, and in its development, gave birth to the tradition of Islamic mysticism. Some Islamic thinkers argue that Sufism is an exile from the people who are more concerned with spiritual life so that they no longer think about the problems of Muslims. Sufism experts, as described the Sufis do not care about what is happening around them, let alone strive for the religion of Allah and also as defined by the public. This article is a literature study and uses the content analysis method from several documents about the history of Sufism. This paper proves that not all accusations about Sufism are true. It could see from the reality on the ground, and it turns out that the Sufis and their students play a lot of roles in helping the struggle of Muslims. Both in eradicating evil, re-implementing the Islamic Shari'a, abolishing polytheism, and Jihad. Jihad that has long been forgotten by Muslims in the late Ottoman period. The struggle of heroic Sufis will never fade from the pages of history. True Sufism is Sufism, which follows the instructions of Allah and His Messenger towards the cleanliness of the spirit, the glory of morals and manners, which finally knows Allah with bright eyes. The Holy Jihad is for the sake of perfection, Jihad against self, greed, against tyranny.

Indonesia and Japan are two countries known for their high regard for culture and tradition, with no exception for those associated with religious rituals. In Japan, the Shinto religion is highly renowned for being the existing and believed ancestor religion. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, Islam is the largest religion that has indirectly influenced the cultures and traditions developed in society. Both Islam and the Shinto have a purification ritual with water as their medium, Padusan and Misogi-Harai, respectively. This study focuses on three things, i.e., the history, time of performance, and ritual procedure, to examine the corresponding meaning of the water as the media in both rituals. The method used to collect data is the literature study, and the data is then analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method. As a result of the three aspects studied, two similar meanings of water to the ritualistic purpose were discovered, i.e., purifying the soul from impurities/sin and returning the spirit to devotion to God.

This paper is an attempt to study the scholars’ network of Mandailing Ulama with those of Haramayn in the mid-19th and early 20th century. Employing the content analysis method the research finds that the Mandailing scholars had made an intellectual encounter with the scholars in Haramayn, even some of the established networks with Egyptian and Indian scholars. The Mandailing scholars connote those who ethnically originated from Mandailing clan and data reveals that Mandailing scholars come from the residencies of Tapanuli and East Sumatera, both of which are parts of the modern era North Sumatera province. This not to deny that some of the Mandailing scholars were also born in Makkah. From the aspect of the duration of the study, some scholars studied religion intensively and settled in Makkah, while others only learned the Islamic religion by meeting the scholars of Makkah only during the Hajj period. The last group of scholars only studied religion intensely in Nusantara, but while performing hajj they met the scholars and learned religion in very limited time. Mandailing scholars studied Islamic sciences, especially Quranic exegeses, hadīth, and Sufism to a number of such scholars from Arab and Nusantara as Ahmad Khatib al-Minangkabawi, ‘Abd al-Qadir b. Shabir al-Mandili (Nasution) and Hasan Masysyath. Ideologically, they studied Islamic sciences in the context of the Sunnī school of thought, especially Ash‘arīyah and Shāfi‘īyah. This study then fills the gap of the study of other researchers about the Nusantara Ulama Network with Middle Eastern scholars.

Lending and borrowing are fundamental human activities. Islam generally permits such activities provided that they are based on genuine necessities and will not lead to unfavourable consequences. This article discusses the nature of lending and borrowing activities from the Islamic perspective and specifically in terms of the relationship between debtors and creditors. The main compilations of hadith (sunnan sittah) and related Sharah (commentaries) are referred to in a discussion and analysis of hadith pertaining to debt activities. The content analysis method, incorporating relevant hadiths and patterns of discussion, found that borrowers are obliged to repayment according to a predetermined contract. Additionally, lenders must remain considerate to the borrowers should the latter are unable to fulfil their obligation. In conclusion, a warm relationship between both parties should be established, as lending is a benevolent act which guarantees the lender a considerable reward in the afterlife.
