Purpose An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is commonly used for automating operational processes and enhancing their efficiency inside a company. In the recent years, the increasing development of ERP technologies has increased their impacts on decision-making. Such impact can no longer be underestimated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impacts of ERP systems on the improvement of decision-making quality inside large Moroccan companies. Design/methodology/approach Based on the DeLone and McLean information systems success model and by adopting a quantitative approach, survey data were collected through questionnaires. The established questionnaires were distributed to 104 decision-makers who use ERP systems. To test the developed research model, structural equation modeling based on the partial least squares method was used. Findings The findings of the present investigation showed that information and system quality had a positive impact on the overall user’s experience with the ERP system, whereas service quality had a negative impact on it. This influenced the quality of decision-making. The results also showed that the model used has sufficient and adequate convergent and discriminant validities, as well as sufficient reliability. Originality/value To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical study that evaluates the effect of ERP systems on improving the quality of decision-making in Morocco. The results provide interesting theoretical and managerial implications.

Transport and mobility plans imply strategies and actions that affect the environment. The European Union has introduced in 2001 the strategic environmental assessment (SEA) to take into account and mitigate adverse environmental effects in planning and decision-making. SEA limited implementation has attracted the interest of many scholars that have sought methods able to assess the quality of SEA processes by identifying vices and virtues in practice. In this paper, we measure the quality of eight SEAs for transport and mobility plans of regional and provincial administrations of Italy. Results show that the overall quality level of SEA reports is only barely sufficient, Abruzzo is among the virtuous and Piedmont among the critical administrations. We also stress that the determination of impact significance has received the worse quality score. We finally compare our results to other Italian and British homologous cases finding interesting and generally confirmative evidences.

The rapid urbanisation of the settlements of the Odessa agglomeration has negatively affected the quality of the drinking water that is transported to consumers. The purpose of this study was to determine the most effective measures to provide settlements with quality drinking water. In order to achieve this goal, possible options for measures were considered, and an assessment and comparative analysis of the potential of the proposed options were executed. The most effective measures were evaluated on two criteria: compliance with the principles of sustainable development and whether the measures were effective, reliable and comfortable for consumers when implemented. The factors that influenced the decision-making were the situation and conditions of the implementation of the measures, laboratory tests of the source water and laboratory tests of the water after the treatment process and consumer awareness of participation. The findings demonstrated that a measure was effective if it met the stated criteria. The results of the study are planned to be used as reference material in the elaboration of an integrated plan for the development of settlements, for decision-making in the organisation of recreation and health-related areas and for other resource planning activities.

The conditions are investigated in which Spanish university teachers carry out their teaching and research functions. 655 teachers from the University of Oviedo took part in this study by completing the Academic Setting Evaluation Questionnaire (ASEQ). Of the three dimensions assessed in the ASEQ, Satisfaction received the lowest ratings, Social Climate was rated higher, and Relations with students was rated the highest. These results are similar to those found in two studies carried out in the academic years 1986/87 and 1989/90. Their relevance for higher education is twofold because these data can be used as a complement of those obtained by means of students' opinions, and the crossing of both types of data can facilitate decision making in order to improve the quality of the work (teaching and research) of the university institutions.

In science, safety can seem unfashionable. Satisfying safety requirements can slow the pace of research, make it cumbersome, or cost significant amounts of money. The logic of rules can seem unclear. Compliance can feel like a negative incentive. So besides the obvious benefit that safety keeps one safe, why do some scientists preach "safe science is good science"? Understanding the principles that underlie this maxim might help to create a strong positive incentive to incorporate safety into the pursuit of groundbreaking science.

This essay explains how safety can enhance the quality of an experiment and promote innovation in one's research. Being safe induces a researcher to have greater control over an experiment, which reduces the uncertainty that characterizes the experiment. Less uncertainty increases both safety and the quality of the experiment, the latter including statistical quality (reproducibility, sensitivity, etc.) and countless other properties (yield, purity, cost, etc.). Like prototyping in design thinking and working under the constraint of creative limitation in the arts, considering safety issues is a hands-on activity that involves decision-making. Making decisions leads to new ideas, which spawns innovation.
