Before the establishment of the Islamic Kingdom of Langkat, the people there have embraced Islam. This is because Langkat is adjacent to Aceh, which had already been ruled by an Islamic empire and it broadcast Islam to various regions, including the east coast of Sumatra. The Kingdom of Langkat, especially after relocated its Capital  to Tanjung Pura, had made Islam as a main reference and political legitimacy of the Sultan and the Kingdom in general. As a consequence, Islam is practiced by the majority of Muslim community and reflected in various fields. At the beginning of the 20th century in East Sumatra there emerged publicly funded educational institutions, including those in Langkat. However, religious subjects are not officially acknowledged. Seeing this situation, the Sultan and other Muslims felt responsible for establishing an independent Islamic educational institution. Although Islamic education was preiously taught to Muslim children, but its implementation was largely limited in mosques or private homes. The Kingdom was destined to improve the quality of Islamic education through building an independent educational institution. Keywords: Education, Islamic Empire, Langkat, Sumatera, Indonesia Sebelum berdirinya kerajaan Langkat, masyarakat di sana telah memeluk agama Islam.

The presence of a school in the village is a sign of the concrete presence of the State to fulfill the basic rights of the community in the field of education. Remembering that schools always assume interaction with other elements of society such as parents, students, religious institutions and village governments, their presence also demands responsibility and involvement of all parties at the grassroots in synergic cooperation. Only through quality cooperation involving all parties, an educational institution can become the backbone of a society's progress. Quality cooperation can be evaluated by looking at how the community responds to the concrete problems they face in the field. One of the fundamental problems commonly found in remote areas of Indonesia is the low access to basic education services. By recognizing and identifying problems that occur in their own environment, people are encouraged to recognize violations of their basic rights. In turn, the people themselves are encouraged to collect their rights to the Government and at the same time are aware of being actively involved in development.

Buru Regency is one of the rice suppliers in Maluku Province. The achievements of Buru Regency as Maluku rice supplier cannot be separated from its history as a place for people who were exiled in 1969. The presence of these former people has an influence on social change in Buru Island. Located in Waeapo district, Buru regency, this qualitative research was conducted to explain social change in Waeapo, Buru by the former exiles. The results showed that before the former exiles arrived at Buru Island, the Waeapo was dominated by forests, where the local people practiced swidden agriculture. The presence of former exiles in 1969 changed the landscape of Buru from forest to paddyfields by means of forced labor. The forced labor and introduction of new agricultural system are patterns inherited from the colonial government. Nevertheless, in Buru, the harvest was consumed by the exiles instead of handed over to the government as a custom enforced by the colonials. The change in land use eventually changed the shifting cultivation system to permanent agriculture with the lowland rice farming system which is commonly practiced in Java. Ex-exiles were the people used by the New Order government to carry out development in remote areas in the 1969-1979 era until the change of Buru’s landscape, source of staple food, and cultural diversity exist in Waeapo..
