Herbicides are the most flourishing weed control knowledge eternally developed. To appraise the possessions of herbicides on maize, a study was carried out to evaluate the effect of alachlor on different maize cultivars on germination and early growth parameters. The  studies were carried out in hydroponic conditions supplemented with different concentrations (1.0, 2.5 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 ppm) of alachlor. All the three cultivars of maize were found to be significantly affected with increasing herbicide concentration. Percent germination, vigour index, tolerance index, fresh and dry weight, plumule and radicle length were found to be decreased as the herbicide concentration increased, however the dry weight increased slightly at higher concentration when compared to other concentrations. The percent toxicity increased as the concentration of herbicide increased. The current study clearly implies that higher concentration of alachlor is toxic to maize, resulted in a decline in seed germination and early growth parameters.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijls.v9i4.12638

The use of bottled fruit beverages has increased enormously. The increased consumption increases the public and sewerage industries. It also leads to various sewerage industries problems. The juice factories use large quantities of water which in turn produces large amounts of wastewater that is called ‘effluent’. This effluent contains a large amount of chemicals and organisms from fruits, sugars and additives like colours. The classical juice factory generates 10 litres of ‘effluent’ per litre of juice. Anextensive range of mangoes are used to make juice; the large quantity of effluent is discharged into nearby water bodies or open agricultural land. The researchers are working on the solution to avoid this. One of the researches we tried to solve the problem of using dilution methods was a physicochemical analysis of mango juice effluent and its phytotoxic effects on gingelly. The laboratory experiment was carried outon the phytotoxic effects of mango juice factory effluent (MJFE)on the growth of Gingelly (Sesamum indicum L.). The different concentrations of effluent(Control, 5, 25, 50, 75and 100%) were prepared, after the seeds sowing the mud pots the treatments were given, the germination percentage(G.P.), vigour index (VI), tolerance index (T.I.), phytotoxicity (P) were recorded in 7thDAS. The growth parameters such as shoot length (S.L.), root length (R.L.), number of leaves (N.L.), total leaf area (TLA), fresh weight (F.W.) and dry weight (D.W.) were inspected on 30th DAS of seedlings.The results were exposed after germination characters, and morphological parameters increased (up to5%) effluent concentration and after that declined in higher (above 25%) concentration of MJFE. Because the effluent is toxic, it contains large quantities of organic and inorganic chemicals and high intensity of BOD, COD and others.

The study entitled “Effect of different growing media on seed germination and seedling growth ofJamun (Syzygium cumunii L. Skeels)” was carried out at College of Horticulture, Dr. Y.S.R Horticultural University, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari District, AndhraPradesh, during the year 2018-19.Jamun seeds were sown in media comprising of soil, cocopeat and vermicompost in different ratios, Among which the media comprising of Soil + cocopeat + vermicompost @ 1:1:1 has shown best results in germinationparameters like earlier initiation of germination(10.91 days), less days taken to 50 percent germination(14.5 days) , highest percent of germination at 15 and 30 DAS(48.37% and 98.14 % respectively). The growth parameters likemaximum plant height(96.33cm), more number of leaves(55.75), increased girth(7.58mm) and chlorophyll content, lengthiest primary root(25.82cm), more number of secondary roots per seedling(41.51), highest fresh and dry weight of the shoot(80.24 and 20.67g.) and root and good root: shoot ratio(0.28)at 150 days after sowing were observed in plants that were sown in media comprising of Soil + cocopeat + vermicompost @ 1:1:1.

AbstractThe paper presents the results of a study regarding the influence of treatment with zinc in different concentrations (50 mg∕l, 100 mg∕l, 200 mg ∕l, 300mg/l, 400 mg ∕l, 500 mg/l, 600 mg ∕l) on seed germination and growth in early ontogenetic stages ofCucumis meloL. We analyzed the following indicators: the percentage of germinated seeds; the length of root, the length of the hypocotyl and the length of the seedling; the number of the laterale roots; the tolerance index and the seedling vigor index. The results underline the specific variations of analysed indicators, depending on the concentrations used for the treatments of seeds. The concentrations used for treatment do not influence negatively the seed germination, but affected the seedling growth (especially the root elongation), the formation and growth process of lateral roots and the seedling vigour index. The delay effect of growth process is very pronounced in the case of high concentration.

A laboratory experiment was conducted to know the effect seed treatment with nano insecticides on seed quality of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) cv. TS3R. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of macro and nano insecticides on seed germination and vigour of Pigeonpea. Different recommended seed treatment insecticides viz, malathion, fenvalerate, emamectine benzoate, thiodicarb, sweet flag and neem seed kernel powder insecticides were synthesized to nano form using high energy planetary ball mill. The Pigeonpea seed were treated with different nano insecticides i.e., 10-90 per cent reduction in actual dosage. Among the different treatments studied, seed treated with nano malathion 50 per cent lesser than normal dosage, fenvalerate 60 per cent lesser, thiodicarb 10 per cent lesser, emamectine benzoate 30 per cent lesser, sweetflag 70 per cent lesser, neem seed kernel powder 40 per cent lesser than actual recommended dosage gave significantly higher seed germination (98.0, 98.67, 98.67, 97.0, 99.0 and 98.67 percent) ,less number of abnormal seedlings (1.0, 0.33, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 and 0.33 per cent) , shoot length (10.13, 9.00, 11.47, 9.50, 10.90 and 10.87 cm), root length (12.56, 12.93, 12.83, 12.60 11.50 and 13.00 cm), seedling dry weight (85.73, 87.40, 88.47, 87.70, 88.60 and 88.27 g) and seedling vigour index (2223, 2164, 2397, 2143, 2217 and 2354) as compared to untreated seeds and macro insecticides. Therefore, it is very clear that nano based insecticides has a significant (0.1 %) impact on the seed quality improvement.

Rice husk ash as desiccation material can be used to maintain seed viability in storage through its ability to absorb humidity during its storage. High relative humidity caused seed moisture content to increase so the respiration rate of seed increases and uses faster food stock. Finally the viability of seed is lost. A research on use of rice husk ash as desiccation material of cocoa seed storage was conducted in Agronomy Laboratory and Kaliwining Experimental Station, Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute. Completely Randomized Design was used in this research with treatment of rice husk ash application on cocoa seed as follows: 0 g/100 seeds (A), 5 g/100 seeds (B), 10 g/100 seeds (C), 15 g/100 seeds (D), and 20 g/100 seeds (E). This experiment used four replications. Cocoa seeds were stored in plastic bag within carton box in ambient temperature. The storage periods were 1, 2, and 3 weeks, and parameters of observation consisted of electrical conductivity of dipped water of cocoa seeds, percentage of seed germination, percentage of seed emergence, early growth parameters at one month old including seedlings height of seedling, diameter, leaf number, root length, and dry weight. The result of the experiment showed that the use of rice husk ash at 5-10 g/100 seeds could maintain electrical conductivity of dipped water at low level, percentage of seed germination at 99-100 % and percentage of seed emergence at 79-91% after two weeks storage. The use of rice husk ash at 5-10 g/100 seeds after two weeks storage affected height of cacao seedling, but did not affected stem diameters, leaf numbers, root lengths, and dry weights

Increasing soil salinity due to global warming severely restricts crop growth and yield. To select and recommend salt-tolerant cultivars, extensive genotypic screening and examination of plants’ morpho-physiological responses to salt stress are required. In this study, 18 prescreened maize hybrid cultivars were examined at the early growth stage under a hydroponic system using multivariate analysis to demonstrate the genotypic and phenotypic variations of the selected cultivars under salt stress. The seedlings of all maize cultivars were evaluated with two salt levels: control (without NaCl) and salt stress (12 dS m−1 simulated with NaCl) for 28 d. A total of 18 morpho-physiological and ion accumulation traits were dissected using multivariate analysis, and salt tolerance index (STI) values of the examined traits were evaluated for grouping of cultivars into salt-tolerant and -sensitive groups. Salt stress significantly declined all measured traits except root–shoot ratio (RSR), while the cultivars responded differently. The cultivars were grouped into three clusters and the cultivars in Cluster-1 such as Prabhat, UniGreen NK41, Bisco 51, UniGreen UB100, Bharati 981 and Star Beej 7Star exhibited salt tolerance to a greater extent, accounting for higher STI in comparison to other cultivars grouped in Cluster-2 and Cluster-3. The high heritability (h2bs, >60%) and genetic advance (GAM, >20%) were recorded in 13 measured traits, indicating considerable genetic variations present in these traits. Therefore, using multivariate analysis based on the measured traits, six hybrid maize cultivars were selected as salt-tolerant and some traits such as Total Fresh Weight (TFW), Total Dry Weight (TDW), Total Na+, Total K+ contents and K+–Na+ Ratio could be effectively used for the selection criteria evaluating salt-tolerant maize genotypes at the early seedling stage.

Cicer arietinum (L.) seed were exposed to electric field in the soil via electrodes. Five different EF were (3V,6V, 9V, 12V, and 0V) were induced 10 min after 24hours for 100 days, each treatment was consisting of an isolated gathering of plants. The rate of seed germination was enhanced to the control group. Plant height, root length, number of leaves, number of flowers, dry weight of the plant, and seed weight were measured at harvesting. Plants height by the influence of 3V, 6V, 9V and 12V were found to be significant in all treated groups than the control group, having an increase of 25.5%, 30.5%, 11.8%, and 17.1%. Similarly, root length was significantly increased than the control group, being increased in 3V, 6V and 12V by 28.6%, 24.0%, 3.0% and retarded in 9V by -3.0%. Leaves numbers were significantly higher than the control group, being increased by 25.3%, 25.2%, 15%, and 19.3% respectively. There was no centrality contrast found indifference in, number of flowers, the dried weight of plant and weight of seeds respectively.

Allelopathy is a phenomenon of direct or indirect, beneficial or adverse effects of a plant on its own or another plant through the release of chemicals into the environment. This experiment was carried out to determine the allelopathic effect of Cyperus rotundus L. (purple nutsedge) tuber aqueous extract on seed germination and initial growth of Glycine max L. (soybean) seedlings. The experiment was performed in completely randomized (CRD) design with five replications, using a range of concentrations of aqueous tuber extracts of nutsedge, i.e.: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. The petri dish experiment showed that with increase of the tuber extract concentration, a significant increase was noted in mean germination time (MGT), significant decreases in germination index (GI), growth tolerance index (GTI), wet weight seedling, dry weight seedling and  length of soybean seedling.

The germination behaviour of unsoaked, hydroprimed and thiourea primed seeds (TU,750, 1000 and 1250 ppm) in water , polyethylene glycol (PEG, -0.2 and -0.4 MPa ) and NaCl (30 and 50 mM) was investigated. The percent germination and seedling growth of TU primed seeds was best compared to other treatments under stressed conditions. The root/shoot ratio increased with stress in all seedlings and vice versa for seedling vigour index. TU primed seeds exhibited the highest tolerance index (85) under - 0.2 MPa PEG treatment and 40 tolerance index under 30mM salinity stress. Priming with thiourea @1000 ppm was the most effective in ameliorating water and salinity stress.

Effluent generated by various processes in factories is directly discharged without any end point treatment into drains and used for irrigation purposes. The present study was carried out to assess the effects of glass industry effluent on seed germination and seedling growth of Glycine max. Different physico-chemical parameters of effluent were analysed. The pot culture laboratory experiment was conducted with the different effluent concentrations viz., 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% along with control (ground water) used as irrigation for Glycine max crop on different time interval. The growth parameters and biochemical parameters of Glycine max were measured as root length shoot length, vigour index, chlorophyll content, ascorbic acid, fresh biomass and dry biomass on 21st day of sowing period. Maximum results of plant parameters were obtained in 25% effluent concentration diluted with 75% ground due to optimum level of nutrients present in it.
