Purpose – Acknowledgement of the social impact created by organisations has become an increasingly frequent discussion among practitioners. The importance of such value creation cannot be understated, yet in an increasingly competitive funding environment, the need to articulate “true” value is paramount. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Australian and US managers of non-profit organisations (NPOs) and foundations view the measurement of the social impact of NPOs. Design/methodology/approach – The paper includes 19 in-depth interviews of non-profit professionals in the USA and Australia. Respondents included non-profit managers, foundation managers and consultants in both countries. Findings – The in-depth interviews found that in both countries respondents generally agreed that objective measures of impact are desirable, but recognised the difficulties in developing objective assessment frameworks enabling comparisons across the non-profit sector. These difficulties, as well as the implications for developing assessments of social value for NPOs, are discussed. This paper demonstrates that there is an opportunity to reposition reporting expectations. The NPO sector can pool together and build on each other’s strengths and market their outcomes as a collective entity. A sector-wide approach provides potential for much needed within-sector mentoring and will showcase the rich and varied outcomes generated by NPOs. Originality/value – This research compares viewpoints in two Western countries, thus offering at least an exploratory examination of social impact assessment from an international perspective. Additionally, this research shows commonalities in terms of what is valued and what is most difficult for non-profits when determining social impact.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the formation of a media consumption culture in the information-rich multiconfessional and bilingual region of the Russian Federation – the Republic of Tatarstan. The authors of this article conducted a survey of 200 respondents aged 19-55 who are active users of the RuNet. The survey was carried out among students of the Kazan State Institute of Culture and Kazan Federal University, as well as media professionals from the Republic of Tatarstan. The anonymous survey was conducted in January-March 2019. Of all the respondents participated in this survey, 56% were aged 19-20. Eighty-three percent of the respondents were female – students, teachers and media workers of the Republic of Tatarstan. Sixty-five percent of them combined their education with work. Ninety-eight percent of the respondents received information from the Internet, 76% watched information programs on television, 27% listened to the radio and only 7.5% of the respondents still read newspapers. Sixty-eight percent of the surveyed trusted messages received from news agencies, while 78% trusted news messages received from news aggregators. Ninety percent of the respondents trusted information received from online media; 11% trusted the information received from social networks and only 4.5% of the respondents trusted the information discussed in blogs. The high percentage of trust to information obtained from the media and the low percentage of trust to information obtained from blogs indicates the current culture of media use and media literacy of the population in the situation with fake news. Of all the respondents answering the question "Do you refer to the source of information you use on the Internet?", 91.5% answered positively. Disturbingly, 92.5% of the surveyed believe that they do not have to pay for the information received from online media. The authors explain the refusal to pay for content with a small amount of exclusive and analytical materials in the information field of the Republic of Tatarstan

The Russian Academy of Sciences together with the Electronic Library eLibrary.ru have developed an academic rating of scientific journals from the Special Collection (SC), which includes about 15% of the journals of the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI). The academic rating is based on the methodology of calculating the thematic ratings of the RSCI. The basis of the academic rating formula is the impact factor of the journal, which takes into account the citations of articles only from the journals of the SC collection and journals included in the international bibliographic databases Web of Science and Scopus. The paper concludes that the methodology for calculating the academic rating has significant drawbacks, which did not allow the academic rating to give a complete and objective assessment of the authority of Russian scientific journals.

This work is devoted to the study of paired words that exist in the languages of the central zone of the Volga-Kama language union - Chuvash and Mari. The aim of the research is to establish the common layer of paired lexical formations in the compared languages. The research material was the lists of paired words compiled on the basis of academic lexicographic sources. The work was done in a comparative aspect. It is based on a quantitative and qualitative approach that allows an objective assessment of the parameters of the phenomenon under consideration. As a result of the research, the author comes to the conclusion that there are more than two times more paired words in the Chuvash language than in the Mari. This disproportion is due to the dominance of the syntactic way of word formation in the Chuvash language, in contrast to the Mari with its leading affix way of derivation. The author presents the classification of the common fund of the Chuvash and Mari paired formations: 1) Chuvashisms in the Mari language, which are absent in the original language; 2) Chuvashisms in the Mari language, which have been preserved in the donor language; 3) common units with opposite arrangement of components; 4) Mariisms in the Chuvash language. The Mari list of paired words contains the units of Chuvash origin that are absent in the original language. For this reason, the Mari material can become a new area of contactological research, contributing to the reconstruction of similar lacunar paired words in the Chuvash language.
