ABSTRACTGiven global population ageing and the fact that Australia is experiencing a significant increase in the proportion of older adults in its population, research into ageing issues has become a national priority. Whilst body image and self-esteem have been empirically linked, the relationship among older adults has been neglected. This study investigated several body-image variables and their relationship to self-esteem in a sample of 148 men and women aged 65–85 years who were living independently in the Perth Metropolitan Area of Western Australia. They completed the ‘Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale’ and the ‘Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire’. The results indicated, contrary to a common misconception, that body-image concerns are significant to self-esteem in older adulthood, but that these vary by age and gender. Whilst women appear to develop various strategies to counter the effects of ageing, men seem to be more negatively affected, particularly in relation to body functioning. The findings shed light on the meaning of body image in older adulthood. A better understanding of the meaning of body image, of the factors that influence the meaning, and of how these relate to older adults' self-esteem may help older adults develop a positive body image that will contribute to psycho-social strengths and enhance their quality of life.

Two objectives were formulated. The first was to establish whether characteristics such as self-esteem, perception of body image, and dating perpetration explain dating victimization. The second was to check if sex moderates the relationship between low self-esteem and dissatisfaction and if body dissatisfaction mediates the effect of low self-esteem on being a victim of dating violence (DV). A total of 1,409 Colombian adolescents and young adults, secondary and university students (42.5% men and 57.5% women), aged between 14 and 25 years ( M = 18.6 years; SD = 2.8 years) participated. An explanatory correlational design was used, in which the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Body Shape Questionnaire, and the Revised Dating Violence Questionnaire were applied. Six regression models were proposed for both men and women, where it was found that low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, and violence exerted in the courtship explain the violence received. Also, through the moderated mediation analysis, a moderate conditional indirect effect was verified of low self-esteem in DV victimization (R2 = 0.052***) through body dissatisfaction, being higher in women than in men. The preceding points to the convenience of intervening on self-esteem and body image in adolescents and young victims of this type of violence and considering these aspects in prevention campaigns.

Abstract This integrative review of literature followed the PICO strategy to investigate the repercussions of the use of social networks on the body image of their users. PubMed, LILACS, PsycINFO and SciELO databases were included as well as articles published between January 2006 and February 2019. Thirty-three articles were analyzed, which compose the corpus of this review. The studies revealed that social networks have a predominantly negative repercussion on the body self-image of their users, increasing levels of body dissatisfaction, also having a negative impact on mood and self-esteem. Added to this, social networks influenced the body type that users would like to have, translated by the lean body profile, considered a model of beauty.

In this cross-sectional study, 421 students (68.2% female, 31.6% male) who were accessible and volunteer among 673 students studying in different classes of Dokuz Eylül University School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation were included. The demographic characteristics of the students were written. Their participation in social and scientific events, and student clubs was determined. Students’ satisfaction in terms of academic success, choice of profession, education and studying in the department were asked. The self-esteem of the students was determined with the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Scale-Short Form. Students were aged between 18 and 32 years old (median = 20 years, interquartile range 19/21). 86.5% of students had high self-esteem. There was no difference in terms of self-esteem between the groups according to gender (p=0.361) and classes (p=0.655). It was seen that there was a positive significant weak correlation between the economic status reported by the students and their self-esteem (Kendall’s tau-b r = 0.080, p=0.044). Social events (Kendall’s tau-b r=0.132, p=0.001), scientific events (Kendall’s tau-b r=0.132, p=0.019) and student club participation (Kendall’s tau-b r=0.136, p=0.001) were found to have a statistically significant positive weak correlation with self-esteem. The students who were satisfied with their education (p=0.001), academic success (p=0.000), career choice (p=0.001), and studying in School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (p=0.000) were found to have significantly higher self-esteem than the students who weren’t satisfied. In this study, it was concluded that choosing the profession that students would be satisfied with, keeping students’ satisfaction high, and organizing the ideal variety of activities and club activities that they can participate in may be important for the development of self-esteem.
