In the face of increasing falsification of the Great Patriotic War facts, the evidence of contemporary witnesses and the objective coverage of those events are becoming increasingly important. In this regard, the creative writing by Russian writers and poets is especially significant, especially first and foremost by those who personally took part in combat during the military operations against the Nazi aggression or worked on the home front. The following article is devoted to writers and poets of Tyumen, namely to the alumni and faculty from the University of Tyumen, on whose fate and creative writing the Great Patriotic War left its deep trails, becoming the major topic of their writing. Their names and biographies were revealed in the course of research in 2015-2020. The authors have collected the students’ and academic staff’s stories about their parts in the war and their meditations, which has substantially supplemented the data about the University’s history during the war and its contribution to the Victory. Using the historical biographical and comparative approaches, the authors have studied war-time biographies of the Tyumen authors, presented little known facts of their frontline and working life, as well as analyzed their reflections in the following literary creative work of the Tyumenians, of which memoirs and non-fiction prose have become the most prolific genres. This article comprises biographical data on eleven war veterans, home front workers, and children of war — writers and poets, closely related to one of the leading university of Tyumen and the Tyumen Region.

The events and processes that took place in the higher education system of Irkutsk are considered. The city, remote from the world war fronts, became a significant center of the active army’s logistics system. The article analyzes one fragment of this status — the participation of the city’s universities in solving tasks that are important for the country and difficult to perform. Irkutsk turned into a University center, where already existing universities increased the output of highly qualified specialists and hosted a number of evacuated universities, providing them with premises, equipment, places to live for teachers and students, and the necessary resources for work and life. At the same time, a small number of University premises were also transferred to hospitals and defense enterprises, and students and teachers took on a significant part of the work on the treatment and maintenance of wounded soldiers.

Risk of the spread of acute contagious infections at the front has sharply increased with the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, as a result of which the problem of ensuring sanitary and epidemic wellbeing, including the home front, has been put forward. The issue of preventing the spread of infectious diseases was developed in the war period on the home front, by a group of scientists from the city of Chkalov as well. An important role was given to solving the problem of production of bactericides, improving the production of vaccines and serums, research to increase their immune properties, reduce reactivity, etc. Three institutes of epidemiology and microbiology functioned in the city of Chkalov (now Orenburg) in wartime: Smolensky, Chkalovsky and Ukrainian institute named after I. This article analyses the importance of historical narratives, myths and symbols in the process of the formation of the Soviet identity of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Throughout the Soviet period Vilnius was one of the Soviet capitals where the regime made every effort to modify the identity of the city in compliance with the prevailing Soviet ideology: to establish the ideological centre of the country, to shape the city so that it would meet the needs of the new ‘Soviet citizen’ and to alter its historical identity – erase the old historic sites, historical memory and form the new identity of the city. The most obvious manifestations of ‘rewritten’ history can be observed in the physical shape of the city – its architectural/urban development, changes of street names and the erection of new Soviet monuments. The said tangible signs and symbols of authority as well as the intangible ones – new historic narrative of the Soviet city, myths about its having a revolutionary past, the Great Patriotic War and the idea of progress were aimed at the legitimation of the regime, the formation of the citizenry’s new identity and social indoctrination.
