With respect to population growth, there will inevitably be an increasing need for improvements in technology, which has led to greater energy efficiency, higher labour efficiency, continuous production methods and operating flexibility; in addition to these factors, mechanisation has also advanced rapidly. It has been also been reported that the introduction of louder machines with the process of industrialisation has made noise a major occupational and environmental hazard. Against this backdrop, a study has been conducted to assess the impact of occupational noise, if any, on the hearing status of human resources occupationally engaged in the industry. A total of 57 male volunteers, aged between 25 and 39 years, working at least for a period of 5 years, constituted the exposed group. A total of 36 individuals of comparable age working in administrative office constituted the control group. Hearing impairment was calculated at speech frequency, up to 4 kHz and up to 6 kHz. The degree of hearing impairment was also calculated. From the present study, it may be concluded that the hearing ability of the human resources, engaged in different sections of the industry, is significantly impaired compared to their age matched counterparts.

Background: Noise pollution or noise is an unwanted sound which is disturbing to human beings.However small or soft the sound, if it is undesirable it is considered as noise. Noise induced hearingloss is a sensorineural hearing loss that is commonly encountered second to presbycusis. Purpose: Toknow the effect of traffic noise exposure on hearing impairment to the employees of the Parking DistrictCompany of the Denpasar city and to improve diagnostic detection on hearing impairment caused bynoise. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted at the Parking District Company office. Thepopulations of this study were the employees of the Parking District Company. Samples of this study were the employees who were exposed to traffic noise and control samples were an employee who was unexposed. Samples were selected by simple random sampling. Results: From 40 parking attendants,27 persons (67.5%) aged above 35 years old. The parking attendants who had been working for ten to fifteen years were 36 persons (90%) and no history using ear protection when working. Seven persons(17.5%) had referred DPOAE upon examination with increase hearing threshold on audiogram result.In this study the parking attendants who had hearing deficit induced by noise were 7 persons (17.5%)and only one person (2.5%) in control group. There was a statistically significant effect of traffic noiseto hearing function deficit (p<0.05). Conclusion: Traffic noise has effect in hearing function deficit onthe parking attendants.ORLI Vol. 40 No. 2 Tahun 2010Key words: NIHL, parking attendant, audiometry, DPOAE.

Seniors are a constantly growing group of people in many societies. It is necessary to develop physiotherapeutic programs to improve their mobility. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the physiotherapeutic program conducted unstable ground on selected indicators of motor functions of elderly women. Sixty women (60–80 years) participated in the research. Group A (N = 20) underwent a 12-week physiotherapeutic program on stable ground, group B (N = 20) followed an exercise program on unstable ground, and group C (N = 20) (control group) had no therapeutic intervention. The effects of the therapy were assessed by using a FreeMed platform (foot load analysis) and a Biosway balance system. The results were compared using ANOVA (the one-way analysis), the Kruskal–Wallis test and also the post hoc tests (Tukey’s test and the multiple comparison test). In group A, a statistically significant change was observed in the static test and balance assessment, in group B this was observed in the static and dynamic foot tests and balance assessment, in group C, no statistical significance was achieved. The authors’ physiotherapeutic program had a statistically significant effect on changes in the balance and selected indicators of the motor functions of the examined people. Comparing the results before and after the therapy more improvement changes were noted in women training on an unstable ground compared to women training on a stable ground.

Nursing staffs from two long-term care facilities attended a multisession educational program about the care of residents with diabetes (treatment group). A control group consisted of the nursing staffs from two other similar facilities who did not participate in the educational program. Both groups were given a knowledge pretest and posttest. A chart review also was conducted following the educational intervention to determine any changes in the diabetes care provided by the treatment group. Following the educational program, the treatment group had a significant increase in their mean score on the knowledge test compared with the control group. However, a. review of the residents' charts revealed no significant increases in specific behaviors related to diabetes care. The findings suggest that, in addition to educational programs, more focused training concerning diabetes care is needed to improve the care of residents with diabetes in long-term care facilities. Implications for diabetes educators are discussed.

The paper presents the results of a study of reflexive techniques impact on the educational motivation of medical university students. In the context of the implementation of the humanistic paradigm in pedagogy, the role of motivation in educational activity regulation is analyzed. Reflexion is considered by the subjects of pedagogical process as a factor of facilitation of "objectification" of needs in the context of educational activity and construction of its subjective sense. It was found that for ISMA students professional motives are dominant in educational motivation and avoidance motives are the least declared. As a result of a quasi-experiment with two non-randomized groups, the impact of reflexive techniques on educational motivation was assessed. The techniques made it possible to keep the structure of educational motivation unchanged in the experimental group, while in the control group a decrease in professional motives and an increase in communicative motives were found.

Background and Aim: As means for enhancing gastrointestinal (GI) motility, prokinetics have previously been evaluated in different breeds of horses with varying success. No previous studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of prokinetics on the intestinal tract of Arabian horses breed. Using B-mode ultrasound in the quantification of intestinal contractility, this study aimed to compare the impact of neostigmine and metoclopramide on the intestinal motility of healthy Arabian horses. Materials and Methods: Twenty-one clinically healthy Arabian horses were equally distributed into three groups. The control group was administered with 5 mL normal saline intramuscularly (IM). The second group was administered with neostigmine (0.044 mg/kg body weight [BW], IM), and the third group was administered with metoclopramide (0.25 mg/kg BW, IM). Duodenal, cecal, and colonic contractions were counted through ultrasonography for 3 min (pre-administration and 15, 30, 60, 120, and 180 min post-administration). Results: In the neostigmine group, a significant (p<0.05) increase in duodenal, cecal, and colonic contractions was observed 15 min post-administration compared with that in the control group (15±1.0, 11.33±1.53, and 12.33±2.31 vs. 11.0±2.0, 6.33±0.58, and 5.33±0.58 contractions per 3 min, respectively), continuing to 60 min post-administration for the duodenum and cecum and 120 min for colon and then returning to the normal; however, the metoclopramide group showed a significant (p<0.05) increase only in cecal and colonic contractions 60 min post-administration compared with the control group (11.0±1.0 and 12.33±0.58 vs. 6±1.0 and 5.67±0.58 contractions per 3 min, respectively), continuing until the end of the experiment. Excessive sweating, excitation, and straining were recorded following the administration of neostigmine, whereas no side effects were observed in the metoclopramide group. Conclusion: Neostigmine improves duodenal, cecal, and colonic contractions in healthy adult Arabian horses, whereas metoclopramide only improves cecal and colonic contractions. Metoclopramide appears to be safer and longer acting than neostigmine in the Arabian horse breed. Ultrasonography is a valuable noninvasive tool for the quantification of intestinal contractility. Future studies should consider the use of various dosages of metoclopramide and administration routes and investigate its impact on horses with GI transit disorders and inclusion in colic post-operative care.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of virtual laboratories (VLabs) on academic achievement and Learning Motivation in the Students of Sudanese Secondary School in the subject of chemistry. The study followed a quasi-experimental method. The population consisted of second-grade students of Almutamaar school boys in Omdurman, the study sample was selected randomly totaling 54 students were divided randomly into two groups: 27 for experimental group and 27 for control group. The study used achievement pre & post tests, and Learning Motivation scale as tools for data collection. The result showed that  there  were statistically significant differences at the level (0.05) between the mean scores of students of the experimental group (a group is taught by VLabs) and control group (a group is taught by conventional method) in the post test in favor of the experimental group, and there were statistically significant differences at the level (0.05) between the mean scores of pre and post test for the students of the experimental group in favor of the post test, and there were statistically significant differences at the level (0.05) in the Learning Motivation scale between the experimental group( taught by VLabs) and control group (taught by conventional method)  for the favor of the experimental group too.

Background: Interactive Teaching learning can be used in clinical subjects like surgery for better participation of students as one-way didactic lectures do not involve active participation of students. WhatsApp is one of the most famous messaging services which everyone use and it is easy, cheaper, and faster. Objective: the purpose of the study was to study the impact of whatsapp in improving learning in general surgery among 9th semester medical students. Methods: This study was conducted among 9th semester MBBS students in Surgery department. Students were divided into group a (study group) and group b(control group) by a simple random sampling. Gastric cancer was discussed among students of both Groups through didactic teaching. after didactic teaching, only Group A students were exposed to social media type of learning, i.e., using WhatsApp, after the session a multiple-choice questionnaire having 10 MCQs was given to both groups and an additional poll was conducted among the Study-group students to assess their perception towards Whatsapp intervention. the mean score obtained by both the groups were compared with unpaired t test. P-value <0.05 is taken as statistically significant. Results: The mean (SD) score of the Study-group was 8.58(1.18) and the mean (SD) score of the Control-group was 5.41(1.32) and statistically significant difference was found between the two groups scores with a p-value less than 0.05 opinion poll found that the intervention of whatsapp among study group was effective. Conclusion: we observed that the usage of WhatsApp in addition to the didactic teaching was found advantageous and enhanced learning in undergraduate students

Abstract Objective To evaluate the impact of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) on the protection of thymic function after allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Methods Established model of allogenic murine HSCT (C57BL/6→BALB/c). The severity of acute graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) was assessed by a clinical scoring system that incorporates five clinical parameters: weight loss, posture, activity, fur texture and skin integrity. The intra-cellular levels of interferon-γ (INFγ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in thymocyte were analyzed by protein array and thymic function was evaluated by quantification of signaljoint TCR rearrangement excision circles (sjTRECs). Results Recipients in group A (allogenic mice), B( allogenic LHRH castrated-mice) and C (syngenic mice) all attained hematopoiesis reconstitution. White blood cell counts of mice in groups A, B and C were over 1.0×109/L on day (10.60±1.34), day (9.40±0.55) and day (9.40±0.89), respectively. There was no significant difference among the time of hematopoiesis reconstitution in three groups. The time of acute GVHD occuring was on day +11±0.5 and +14±0.5 posttransplantation, respectively, in groups A and B, and all mice had acute GVHD with the incidence of 100% in groups A and B. The average scores of acute GVHD in groups A and B were (1.56±0.51) and (0.92±0.49), respectively. Acute GVHD scores in group A was significantly higher than that in group B (P=0.000). The levels of INFγ, TNFα and IL-1β in control groups were 1.67±1.76 ng/ml, 1.69±1.07 pg/ml and 5.55±3.56 pg/ml, respectively. The levels of INFγ in groups A, B and C were (10.74±2.55) ng/ml,(6.81±2.33) ng/ml and (5.52±3.96) ng/ml, respectively. The levels of TNFα were (7.51±2.89) pg/ml, (4.30±0.63) pg/ml and (3.36±2.31) pg/ml, respectively. The levels of IL-1β were (25.83±8.91) pg/ml, (19.33±3.03) pg/ml and (11.94±4.00) pg/ml, respectively. There were significant differences in the levels of cytokines between group A and the control group (P=0.000, 0.000, 0.000). The levels of cytokines in group B were significantly higher than those of control group (P 0.010,0.037,0.000). The levels of INFγ in group C were significantly higher than those of the control group (P=0.044). Among groups A, B and C, there were significant differences in the levels of INFγ, TNFα and IL-1β (P=0.001,0.000,0.000). The levels of INFγ and TNFα in group A were significantly higher than those in group B (P=0.041,0.013). The levels of INFγ, TNFα and IL-1β in group A were significantly higher than those in group C (P=0.009, 0.002, 0.000). The analysis of linear regression showed that the average levels of INFγ paralled with aGVHD scores (r2 0.363,P=0.038). The average sjTRECs copies/1000 PBMNCs were (39.41±44.68) in the control group and (12.29±13.02), (58.01±71.82) and (19.61±14.59) in groups A, B and C, respectively. There was no significant difference in the multiple comparisons of peripheral blood levels of sjTRECs among these four groups (P=0.575). Conclusion INFγ ATNFα and IL-1β might be involved in the damage to the thymus by acute GVHD. Sex steroid inhibitor can not only reduce the severity of thymic damage after allo-HSCT, but also reduce the severity of aGVHD and the mechanism might be associated with the reduction of intracellular levels of INFγ and TNFα in thymocyte.

The purpose of this investigation was to prospectively examine performance on the pure-tone air-conduction threshold, speech-recognition threshold, and suprathreshold word-recognition tests over time in 21 monaurally aided (experimental group) and 28 unaided adults (control group) with asymmetric, sensorineural hearing impairment.The results revealed significant declines on the mean suprathreshold word-recognition scores over time at one and two years post-baseline for the worse ears of the control participants; no declines occurred in the worse ears of the experimental participants or in the better ears of either group. A slight, significant increase in the pure-tone average occurred for the better ears of both groups. The findings are consistent with the presence of an auditory deprivation effect on suprathreshold word-recognition ability in the control group, suggesting that lack of amplification leads to decline in word-recognition performance over time in the worse ears of adults with asymmetric sensorineural hearing impairment.

The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of the intake of aflatoxin on the development of tilapia and to evaluate the impact of inoculation with Aeromonas hydrophila on performance parameters, so these two individual tests were performed. One hundred and twenty fingerlings aged 35 days old, with mean weight of 1.55 ± 0.005 g and mean length of 5 cm were used in each test, distributed in 20 tanks. Each experimental unit consisted of a 60 L tank with six fingerlings. In the first experiment, increasing levels of aflatoxin (0.350, 0.757, 1.177 mg.kg feed-1) were used as treatments and, for the control group, a diet without aflatoxin was used in a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replicates. In the second experiment, a control group of Nile tilapia fingerlings was used and received a diet without aflatoxin, inoculated with saline solution (group 1) and Aeromonas hydrophila (group 2), as well as groups of animals fed on diets containing 0.350 mg.kg feed-1 of aflatoxin (group 3), 0.757 mg.kg feed-1 of aflatoxin (group 4) and 1.177 mg.kg feed-1 of aflatoxin (group 5), and these groups were inoculated with Aeromonas hydrophila. The survival rate and the total length of fingerlings were influenced by the treatments (p < 0.05). The synergistic action of aflatoxins and Aeromonas hydrophila was effective and caused the death of experimental fish, thus affecting feed conversion and length.
