The concept of development has evolved over the past two centuries. The main idea of economic development expanded from economic growth to poverty alleviation, sustainable development, human development, Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Preliminary findings show that these concepts are mainly focused on the physical and material development, ignoring social development which is very fundamental to development. In recent years, the literatures have begun to emphasise that social development is an important dimension of development and its importance was confirmed globally after introducing SDGs. However, the findings in these works remain inconsistent to what constitutes social development, they lack consensus and clear definition of social development, they focus on the physical dimension of social development and, they emphasise on the physical dimension of social development frameworks. This study aims critically to examine the shortcomings and limitations of existing social development, along with its features, definitions and dimensions. The study also attempts to identify the shortcomings of social development frameworks, and to recommend the direction towards developing social development framework, which will be more comprehensive in nature. The paper employs meta-analysis and content analysis methods through the review and analysis of related literature on development, especially social development.

The study draws insights to teacher and learners in terms of teaching material development. Teaching of the second language has been an important issue in modern world. It is not only an area of teaching but also an area of economic concerns. As a natural outcome that brings out, there is a hard competition among the publishers to obtain the high quality of the teaching materials. Any language learning process traditionally needs print materials or non-print materials (Reinders and White, 2010; Richards, 2001, p. 251; McGrath, 2002, pp. 125-136). The current paper is an assessment of the English Language curriculum that is taught in the colleges across Gujarat. Through this paper, it is focused on whether the curriculum fulfills learners’ needs. Curriculum is used as a general term for the entire organized teaching plan of a subject. Syllabus refers to a pre-defined teacher and supervisor definition of how the curriculum will be accomplished over a predefined period. A curriculum can consist of a number of syllabi. In many parts of the world, language education programs are designed following a syllabus-driven approach, that is, the syllabus determines what kind of materials will be prescribed and in what ways they can be implemented for the classroom teaching. In certain educational contexts, the syllabus even determines how materials should be designed in the first place.

Currently, studies on English for Tourism course mainly focuses on need analysis and material development. A few studies highlight the teaching methods for successful learning of the course. This study discusses the implementation of virtual exhibition simulation as a project based learning in the course of English for Tourism enrolled by students of tertiary education majoring English Literature. It aims at revealing the learning process as well as revealing the opportunities and challenges of the activity. Five lecturers are selected as the subject of the study. The data collected through semi structured interview and further qualitatively analysed by seeing the common and unique features. The findings suggest that the implementation of virtual exhibition project should be followed by lecturers’ teaching strategies in the step of preparation, rehearsal and exhibition in order to achieve learning objectives. Despite the technical challenge on internet connection and students’ reluctance that lecturers should cope with, this activity is seen as an alternative method that reflect contextual learning and give students English learning opportunity through intensive interaction and creativity.

In this paper we present an analysis of the development process of technology-supported didactic material. Such analysis considers didactic materials as the conjunction of contents and instructional design used to guide learning and teaching processes. And we examine why several features such as reusability, semantic interoperability and collaboration support must be ensured from the earlier stages of the material creation process. For those reasons didactic material development is not a trivial task and demands of a development methodology support and a high-quality authoring environment. We describe how the MD2 research project provides an integrated solution for creation of didactic materials that take into account those rationales. The MD2 solution is based on two approaches first, the definition of a method for the collaborative creation of didactic materials and second, the elaboration of a quality evaluation framework for a priori testing of educational products. We also present CASLO a collaborative authoring tool used to facilitate these endeavors.

Abstract: Development of teaching materials to write biographical text choosing a life-based learning approach is intended for students of grade X Vocational High School (SMK). This development is considered capable of being a solution to the lack of teaching materials to write biographical text for vocational schools. The selection of life-based learning approaches is considered by researchers to be able to bring learning closer to life. An approach that is in accordance with the characteristics of The Indonesian Language that becomes a science expert. Qr-code presented in the development of this book helps students understand the concepts, materials of teaching materials, articles, concepts of life-based learning, and activities presented. This study uses the ADDIE model (analysis, design, develop, implement, and evaluate). Needs analysis and curriculum become the beginning of knowing the urgency of need analysis. Analysis of student needs at SMKN Darul Ulum shows the need in the development of teaching materials with a percentage of 80%. Product development by arranging teaching material development instruments according to previous needs analysis. Validity test is conducted to know that the teaching materials developed in accordance with the material expert validation test instrument, the validity of learning media, and the validity of field learners. Based on the results of the validity test, the following percentages were obtained: material validity 99.01%, media validity 91.04%, and lastly the validity of field learners 95.52%. Seeing the results, the teaching materials developed by the researchers get very valid results and can be implemented. Keywords: teaching materials, biographical text, Life Based Learning, vocational high school Abstrak: Pengembangan bahan ajar menulis teks biografi memilih pendekatan life-based learning ini ditujukan untuk siswa kelas X Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK). This study is aimed to develop a digital learning game as a medium to enrich students’ insight about their local culture embedded in descriptive text material. Adapting “system approach” model designed by Dick and Carey, this study employed need analysis, material development and formative evaluation as steps to develop the product. The need analysis was conducted by analyzing the documents, administering questionnaires to the students and interviewing the teachers. The material development was done by designing blueprint of the product’s content, pictures and sound in the computer applications. The formative evaluation consisted of the theoretical validation and empirical validation. The result of the theoretical validation was classified into four categorizes involving multimedia, language content, cultural and pedagogical aspect. The multimedia validator graded the most criteria of the game’s design and layout in a very good scale. The language content validator graded the most criteria of the learning game’s content in balance between “very good” and “good” scale. The cultural aspect had been validated by the natives of mentioned places, consisting of a native of Java, Bali and Flores. Lastly, the pedagogical aspect was validated by two teachers who taught seventh grade and eighth grade at SMPN 26 Surabaya. Both teachers graded the digital learning game in a “very good” scale. Those final scales obtained after some revisions from validators had been finished. The result of empirical validation was obtained from the tryout of the product to fifteen students of SMPN 26 Surabaya. The result of the empirical validation showed that the students have positive responds to the developed learning game. It was concluded from the most scales given by the students including “very good” and “good” scale for the mentioned criteria. In conclusion, the digital learning game has met its final product to be used by the students to learn culture for descriptive text material.
