Introduction: R occella montagnei is widely distributed in subtropical regions. As the continuous study on the hexane extract of Roccella montagnei lichen, the isolation and structural determination of five compounds were addressed. Method: The crude extract was obtained from the dried lichen powder's extraction at room temperature. The n-hexane, n-hexane-ethyl acetate, and ethyl acetate extracts were obtained by the liquid-liquid partition method. The organic compounds were isolated from n-hexane extract by silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Their chemical structures were identified by the NMR and HR-ESI-MS data analysis and the comparison of their NMR data with the published data. Results: Five compounds were isolated and chemically structural identified, consisting of 3b -hydroxy-7a-methoxystigmast-5-ene (1), sekikaic acid (2), lichenxanthone (3), (+)-6,8-dihydroxy-3-propyl-3,4-dihydroisocoumarin (4), and ar-turmerone (5). Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, except 3 which was reported from this species for the first time, four isolated compounds left did not known to be present in Roccella genus before.

Introduction: Sterculia foetida Linn. is widely distributed in tropical countries. As the continuous study on the hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of Sterculia foetida leaves, the isolation and structural determination of four triterpenoids and two coumarins were addressed. Method: The crude extract was prepared from dried power of Sterculia foetida leaves by maceration method in ethanol. This extract was then separated by liquid-liquid partition with n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, respectively, to obtain the corresponding extracts. The hexane and ethyl acetate extracts were applied to multiple silica gel column chromatography to yield six compounds. Their chemical structures were determined by the NMR data analysis as well as the comparison their spectroscopic data and physical properties with those of reported literature. Results: Four triterpenoid compounds, including betulinic acid (1), conyzasaponin G (2), taraxerol (3), and taraxer-14-ene- 1a,3b -diol (4), and two coumarins fraxetin (5), and aesculin (6) were identified. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, they have not been reported in the leaves of Sterculia foetida before, and compound 2 was known to present in Sterculia genus for the first time.

Urena lobata L. is used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases. Tree roots are used to treat rheumatism, dysentery, poor digestion, flu, tonsils, malaria, asthma, goiter. Flowers are used to treat chickenpox, fever, and mental disorders. Branches, leaves or whole trees used to treat injuries bruises, rheumatism, mastitis, bites. Phytochemical investigation of the n-hexan and ethyl acetate extract of Urena lobata L. led to the isolation of β-sitosterol (1), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), a-acetylamino-phenylpropyl a-benzoylamino-phenylpropanoate (3), quercetin (4), and trans-tiliroside (5). Their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including MS, 1D, 2D NMR and comparing with those reported in previous papers. Two compounds 3, 5 were isolated for the first time from Urena lobata plant.

A phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of Garcinia mackeaniana leaves led to the isolation, and determination of five secondary metabolites, including one benzophenone 4,3',4'-trihydroxy-2,6-dimethoxybenzophenone (1), two flavone C-glucosides vitexin (2) and its 2''-O-acetyl derivative (3), one biflavone amentoflavone (4), and one mono-phenol methyl protocatechuate (5). The chemical structures of these compounds were characterized by the NMR-spectroscopic method. These isolated compounds were isolated from G. mackeaniana species for the first time. Benzophenone derivative 1 has shown to be associated with a significant IC50 value of 14.97±0.8 µg/mL in the DPPH-antioxidant assay.

From the chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of the leaves of Kalanchoe pinnata L. (Crassulaceae), two flavonoids and three phenolic compounds were isolated; named quercetin (1), 5,7,4’-trihydroxy-8,3’-dimethoxyflavone (2), gallic acid (3), ferulic acid (4) and isoferulic acid (5). Based on the NMR spectroscopy, their chemical structures were elucidated and the result was confirmed by comparison with published data.

A phytochemical investigation of the leaves of Annona reticulata led to the isolation and structural determination of β-sitosterol (1), ent-pimara-8(14),15-dien-19-oic acid (2), ent-pimara- 8(14),15-dien-19-ol (3), quercetin (4), quercetin 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside (5), and a mixture of quercetin 3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside (6a) and quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6b). Of these, compounds 2 and 3 were isolated from the genus Annona for the first time. Compound 3 showed strong cytotoxicity against SK-LU-1 and SW626 cell lines with IC50 values of 17.64 ± 1.07 and 19.79 ± 1.41 μg mL-1, respectively.

Nowadays, knowledge of ancient botanical medicinal practices and application of modern phytochemical techniques have provided the excellent tools for the purification and structural elucidation of various phyto-compounds, which, in turn, has given insights into their mode of action on the human body. This study has been designed to investigate for the first time the antioxidant effects of the ethyl acetate, methanolic, and water extracts of Kitaibelia balansae. Different chemical methods were performed and the observed abilities depend on the solvent used. The best antioxidant ability was noted in water extract, followed by methanol and ethyl acetate extracts. The highest level of phenolic was also detected in water extract. The present findings suggest that K. balansae can be considered as a potential source of bioactive compounds for novel phytopharmaceuticals development

Disease cancer caused by abnormal growth of tissue where there has been an error, fast and out of control. Judging from the fact of gender, more than 270,000 women die every year caused by cervical cancer. To inhibit the growth of cancer cells, a compound is needed that causes the cell cycle to stop so that the ability of cell proliferation decreases. Alkaloid compounds can inhibit proliferation through oxidative inhibition processes that can cause cancer. Mangrove plants have potential as anticancer, antimicrobial, and antioxidant. The content of chemical compounds found in mangroves are flavonoids, steroids, alkaloids, phenolites, saponins and tannins. These compounds show high antioxidant activity and are shown to have a real relationship with the properties of the material's bioactivity against cancer cells. One of the mangrove species is Rhizophora apiculata. The purpose of this study was to determine the IC50 value produced by Rhizophora apiculata mangrove leaf extract on HeLa cell viability and to see the effect of Rhizophora apiculata mangrove leaf extract dosage on HeLa cell viability. The method used in this research is the experimental method. The research parameters included yield, proximate test, phytochemical test, toxicity test, total phenol test, cytotoxicity test and LC-MS test. The experimental design used was a simple and complex completely randomized design (CRD) with the Tukey test.The results of this study showed that the highest yield was in the ethanol extract of 5.91%, while the n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts respectively had yields of 1.18% and 1.31%. The results of the proximate test on the water content of leaves and powder were 64.53% and 13.86%, respectively, the results of the ash content in the leaves and powder of Rhizophora apiculata were 3.94% and 8.41%, respectively. while the water content in the extract obtained the highest yield in the ethanol extract of 21.42%, while the n-hexane extract and ethyl acetate extract were 11.08% and 15.42%, respectively. For phytochemical results, it was found that n-hexane extract only contained alkaloids, flavonoids and steroids. Ethyl acetate extract contains steroid compounds. Meanwhile, the ethanol extract contains the most bioactive compounds, namely saponins, flavonoids, tannins and triterpenoids. The toxicity test using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method resulted in the lowest IC50 of ethanol extract at 49.45 ppm while the n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts were 251.63 ppm and 920.45 ppm respectively. In the total phenol test, the n-hexane extract was 66.79 mg GAE / 100 gr, 222.97 mg GAE / 100 gr ethyl acetate extract and 929.04 mg GAE / 100 gr ethanol extract. HeLa cell cytotoxicity testing using the MTT method (3- (4,5-dimethiltiazol-2-yl) -2,5-dipheniltetra zolium bromide) assay resulted in the highest cell viability value at a dose of 125 ppm of 46.97%. As for the doses of 250 ppm, 500 ppm 1000 ppm, and 2000 ppm resulted in a percentage of viability of 42.95% 37.70% 35.82% and 32.12%, respectively. The IC50 value of Rhizophora apiculata leaf extract was 64.42 ppm. This value indicates that the Rhizophora apiculata extract is toxic to HeLa cells.

Phytochemical investigation of Fissistigma cupreonitens (Annonaceae) led to the isolation of 34 compounds. The chemical structures of all compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods. Among the isolates, compounds 20–27 and 31–34 were reported from this genus for the first time. From the results of the cytotoxicity assay against three human cancer cell lines (NCI-H226, NPC-TW01, and Jurkat E6–1), oxoaporphine compounds oxoxylopine (1), oxocrebanine (3), kuafumine (4) and lysicamine (5), and the flavonoid adunctin E (26) displayed significant cytotoxicity against NCI-H226 cell line, with IC50 values of 8.45, 8.10, 8.54, 12.83 and 12.00 μM, respectively, in comparison with the standard drug, cisplatin with IC50 of 13.37 μM.

Hyperglycemia is a condition of increased blood glucose levels caused by insufficient insulin enzymes produced to control blood sugar levels in the body. This study aimed to determine the activity of ethanol-water, nhexane, and ethyl acetate extracts of Dioscorea alata L. in reducing blood  glucose levels in hyperglycemia modeled mice that were given intraperitoneal alloxan induction. 25 white rats were divided into 5 groups of test animals. Each group consists of 5 mice. The first group was given 0.5% sodium carboxymethylcellulose solution as a placebo, the second group was given 0.65 mg/kg BW glibenclamide as a positive comparison group, the third group was given the suspension of ethanol-water extract, the fourth group was given n-hexane extract, and the fifth group was given ethyl acetate extract at a dose of 140 mg/kg BW. The test preparation was orally given within 14 days of testing. The test was measured as the initial blood glucose levels of mice after alloxan induction and after giving the test preparation suspension. The results of the qualitative analysis illustrate that the water-ethanol extract can reduce blood glucose levels by 31.39%, n-hexane extract by 51.11%, and ethyl acetate extract by 50.77%. The results of quantitative analysis using One Way ANOVA method showed that the water-ethanol, n-hexane, and ethyl acetate extracts significantly decreased the blood glucose levels of mice. The best antidiabetic activity was ethyl acetate extract with a decrease in rat blood glucose levels by 169 mg/kg BW.

A phytochemical investigation of whole <em>Aspidistra letreae</em> plants led to the isolation of 2<em>H</em>-chromen-2-one (<strong>1</strong>), <em>α</em>-tocopherol (<strong>2</strong>), (<em>E</em>)-phytol (<strong>3</strong>), asparenydiol (<strong>4</strong>) and (25<em>S</em>)-spirost-1<em>β</em>,3<em>α</em>,5<em>β</em>-triol (<strong>5</strong>). Their structures were determined on the basis of NMR spectral evidences and in comparison with the reported data. Of these, asparenydiol (<strong>4</strong>) was isolated from the genus <em>Aspidistra</em> for the first time. This is also the first report on the separation and structural determination of (25<em>S</em>)-spirost-1<em>β</em>,3<em>α</em>,5<em>β</em>-triol (<strong>5</strong>) as a pure compound. The methanol extract exhibited a moderate cytotoxicity against the LU-1, HeLa, MDA-MB-231, Hep-G2, and MKN-7 human cancer cell lines with <em>IC</em><sub>50</sub> values ranging from 52.58 ± 3.65 to 64.78 ± 4.89 μg/mL.
