ABSTRACTInterests on biochar application for the improvement of soil properties and fertily are increasing worldwide nowadays and numerous of production techniques are now available. This research was aimed at the investigation (a) on the characteristics biochar produced by 3 (three) different techniques, i.e: (1) traditional soil pit, (2) retort closed drum and (3) open drum kilns, as well as (b) on growth (height, leaf number and survival) response of Shorea leprosula seedling to 20%v biochar application on bioassay trial in the nursery. Bioassay trial was carried out in nursery of Forestry Faculty of Mulawarman University, Samarinda, Indonesia and was in accordance with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) applying 4 treatments and 3 replications.Of those 3 production techniques, retort closed drum kiln production technique was the most promising for further development and adoption providing not only that the biochar produced gave better properties and soil improvement capacity but also higher production recovery and less time and labour involvement. Furthermore, eventhough it was not statistically significant, biochar produced by retort closed drum gave better growth (height and leaf number) rate to S. leprosula seedlings in bioassay trial compared to those given by biochar produced by other techniques and without biochar treatments.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and yield of teak (Tectona grandis) stands at different spacing and in different soil classes. Twelve spacing were evaluated in an Inceptisol and Oxisol, in plots with an area of 1,505 or 1,548 m2, arranged in a completely randomized design with nine replicates. The teak trees were measured at 26, 42, 50, and 78 months of age. Total tree height was less affected by spacing. Mean square diameter was greater in wider spacing, whereas basal area and total volume with bark were greater in closer spacing. An increase in volume with bark per tree was observed with the increase of useful area per plant. For teak trees, growth stagnation happens earlier, the growth rate is higher in closer spacing, and the plants grow more in the Inceptisol than in the Oxisol.

This study evaluated the synergism between several P-solubilizing fungi isolates and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to improve clover ( Trifolium pratense) growth in the presence of Araxá apatite. Clover was sown directly in plastic pots with 300g of sterilized washed sand, vermiculite and sepiolite 1:1:1 (v:v:v) as substrate, and grown in a controlled environment chamber. The substrate was fertilized with 3 g L-1 of Araxá apatite. A completely randomized design, in 8×2 factorial scheme (eight P-solubilizing fungi treatments with or without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi)and four replicates were used. The P-solubilizing fungi treatments consisted of five Brazilian P-solubilizing fungi isolates (PSF 7, 9, 20, 21 and 22), two Spanish isolates ( Aspergillus niger and the yeast Yarowia lipolytica) and control (non-inoculated treatment). The greatest clover growth rate was recorded when Aspergillus niger and PSF 21 were co-inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Aspergillus niger, PSF 7 and PSF 21 were the most effective isolates on increasing clover growth in the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Greater mycorrhizal colonization resulted in greater clover growth rate in most PSF treatments. PSF 7 was the best isolate to improve the establishment of mycorrhizal and rhizobia symbiosis.
