Startfruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) is one the kind of plant that is widely used as a traditional herbal medicineto overcome various diseases i.e. diabetes mellitus, cough, rheumatism, thrush, diabetes, toothache, acne, etc. The secondary metabolites of the starfruit leaves contain flavonoids and tannins, whereby these activecompounds can be used as an antibacterial. This study aimed to determine the inhibiting power of starfruit leaf ethanol extract against Staphylococcus epidermidis at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The research was conducted at the AKAFARMA Laboratory and the Chemistry Laboratory , Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Syiah Kuala University from June to July 2020. The research method was laboratory experimental using the disk diffusion method. The population of starfruit leaves was obtained from Lhokseumawe using a purposive sampling technique. Ethanol extract of starfruit leaves with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The diameter of the inhibition zone of the ethanol extract from the starfruit leaves at concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% were 15 mm, 12 mm, 11 mm and 10 mm, respectively. It can be concluded that ethanol extract of starfruit leaves can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis with a maximum inhibitory concentration of 100%, which is classified as a strong category.

This research aims to formulate and assess the efficacy of the peel-off mask as an anti-acne of ethanol extract from bilimbi leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.). The method used was an experiment, evaluating the extract through the inhibition test of Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria with the paper disk diffusion method. The peel-off mask formulation added the extract with a concentration of 7% (F1), 9% (F2), 11% (F3), and without using extract (F0). The Peel-off mask preparation testing includes the detection of scents, colours, irritation checks, and the determination of peel-off anti-acne mask efficacy. This study was carried out at Akafarma of Banda Aceh and the Chemistry laboratory of FKIP Unsyiah. The findings of the inhibition zone for Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria at extract concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% were 15 mm, 12 mm, 11 mm and 10 mm, respectively. The four peel-off mask formulas were gel, homogeneous, brown, with the distinctive scent of bilimbi leaves, and did not irritate the volunteers’ skin. The average decline in acne before and after using the mask for any formula (F0, FI, FII, and FIII) was 19.64%, 22.63%, 28.75% and 50%, respectively. The peel-off mask of ethanol extract of bilimbi leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) is effective as an anti-acne treatment.

Researchers have been trying to develop new broad-spectrum antibiotics against the infectious diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites for many decades. Prolonged usage of the antibiotics has led to the emergence of drug resistance among bacteria; therefore, there is a tremendous need for novel antimicrobial agents from different sources such as plants which are used in traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate antibacterial effect of Achillea tenuifolia. The plant material was extracted by maceration method using methanol three times at room temperature. The extract was concentrated after removing the solvent by rotary evaporator and then lyophilized using freeze dryer. Inhibitory effect of the extract was examined against four standard bacteria strains and two isolated strains from diseased hen using disk diffusion method and microdilution method to evaluate their inhibition zone diameter (IZD) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), respectively. The results showed that the extract of the plant was active against standard strains including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis with IZDs of 10.3±0.5, 14±0.0, 12±0.0 and 11.6±0.5, respectively. However, growths of isolated strains were not inhibited in the presence of the extract. Although, the growths of isolated strains were not inhibited by the plant extract, the standard strains were moderately susceptible to the extract; among those P. aeroginosa was more sensible than other tested strains

Acne is the abnormality production of sebum in the sebaceous glands which are usually caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis. Staphylococcus epidermidis one of bacterial that caused acne. Quercetin have a phenolic compound that can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis at 0.05% w/w. The purpose of this study was to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of quercetin gel. HPMC was used as gel base. The concentrations of quercetin that was added to gel were 0.05% w/w, 0.15% w/w, and 0.25% w/w. The antibacterial activity of the gels was determined using agar diffusion method. The results showed that the inhibition zone on the F1, F2, and F3 were 7.83 mm , 6.53 mm , 4.56 mm and the result showed that quercetin gels significantly effected the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis (p<0,05). The minimum inhibitory concentration of quercetin gel was 0,05% w/w with inhibition zone of 7.83 mm.
