Abstract Colibacillosis is one of the most problematic issues in the boiler industry. However, the antibiotic overuse has induced Escherichia coli resistance so that other alternative to reduce colibacillosis is needed. One of the alternatives is using aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller), which has been widely used as an antibacterial agent. This study aims to isolate and identify E. coli from the broiler drinking water source and test the aloe vera antibacterial activity against it. Escherichia coli were isolated from well in three broiler farms in Moyudan District, Sleman, Yogyakarta that previously had colibacillosis. Escherichia coli were isolated using eosin methylene blue (EMB) agar and the metallic sheen colony was tested to confirm the biochemist reaction. The pure isolate of E. coli was used in the aloe vera inhibition test using Muller Hinton agar (MHA) by a Well Diffusion method. Aloe vera was processed using aquades and ethanol 70%. The aquades infusion was diluted into 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% and the extract ethanol 70% was diluted into 10%, 12.5, %, 25%, 40%, and 50%. The bacterial identification showed that one of three samples contained E. coli which was then used for inhibition test. The result showed no inhibition zone in the aquades infusion while ethanol extract showed an inhibition zone in concentration 25%, 40%, and 50% of aloe vera extract with a diameter 19.5 mm, 24 mm, and 25 mm. It can be concluded that aloe vera ethanol extract has inhibitory activity against E. coli in poultry drinking water with a minimum concentration of 25%.  Keywords: Aloe vera; Broiler drinking water; Escherichia coli; Inhibitory activity   Abstrak  Colibacilosis masih menjadi permasalahan dalam industri broiler. This study aimed to test the antibacterial activity of n-hexane and methanol extracts of white cempaka flowers (Magnolia alba) against Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. The extract was obtained by using the maceration method for 72 hours. Each extract was tested for its antibacterial properties using the disc diffusion method with the variant concentration of the extract used was 0.05%; 2%; 4%; 6%; and 8%. The results showed that the methanol extract had a higher inhibition zone than the n-hexane extract. In n-hexane extract, the lowest concentration of 0.05% showed an inhibition zone of 6.6 mm and the highest concentration of 8% had an inhibition zone of 9.6 mm. Whereas in methanol extract, the inhibition zone obtained was 7.3 mm at a low concentration of 0.05%, but at the highest concentration of 8% the inhibition zone obtained was 11.6 mm. The effect of extract concentration on the diameter of the inhibition zone formed is very significant (directly proportional), where the higher the concentration used, the larger the diameter of the inhibition zone produced. Antibacterial testing for both extracts showed a weak (< 10 mm) to moderate (> 10 mm) bacterial inhibition, which was similar with the inhibition zone obtained from the positive control (11-11.3 mm; moderate bacterial inhibition).

Introduction: Corn silk or known as herb name stigma maydis is an important medicinal botanical in many traditional medicines worldwide, including jamu, an Indonesia traditional medicine. The exploration of corn silk to treat acne vulgaris is still lacking, therefore the current research was conducted to analyze the activity of ethanolic extract from corn silk (EECS) against 3 acne-related bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. Materials and Methods: The antibacterial activity of EECS at concentration range of 10 to 100% v/v was evaluated using the disk diffusion method. As comparation, distilled water was used as a solvent control, while 1% clindamycin was used as a positive control. Results: Shinoda’s test showed that flavonoid was detected in the EECS. The higher concentration of EECS exhibited higher diameter of inhibition zone indicating higher antibacterial activity on P. acnes, while the antibacterial activity of S. epidermidis was not increased at similar concentrations of EECS. The antibacterial activity of EECS against S. aureus decreased at the higher EECS concentration (>70%). Conclusion: Taken together, EECS is a potential as a bioactive source to inhibit the growth of acne-related bacteria P. acne, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Further investigation is needed to explore the corn silk or stigma maydis as a medicinal botanical in jamu targeted to treat acne vulgaris.
