Pandemics though concern the medical health of a certain community or communities, also have a significant impact on the mental health of the members of that community. Each section of society is affected, albeit differently, in a pandemic. Art and literature engage with and represent society and all its mores. In a pandemic as well, these modes of representation assume a special responsibility and role. This paper seeks to analyse the representation of the mental health of individuals and society through literary and artistic mediums. In the case of artistic mediums, cinematic portrayals will be the centre of study. These representations, in turn, affect one’s mental state and understanding of a situation. The paper will thus, study and evaluate certain literary and cinematic texts, their representation of mental health, and their applicability to the COVID-19 pandemic using established theories as supporting material to substantiate the claims made in the study of the aforementioned works.

Cultural sustainability refers to inter-and intra-generation access to cultural heritage. The sustainability of non-material culture is complex because it is related to the experiences of cultural groups and is built by actors in their daily lives. Cultural sustainability is important for the diaspora community because it is an attempt to maintain their cultural identity in their communities while not completely losing contact with cultural elements in their ancestral lands. This paper discusses the strategies used by Muslim Tamils in Medan, North Sumatra, The Muslim Tamils in Indonesia use mainly informal strategies in the process of preserving culture. However, technological advances that have increased the ease of travel and communication have also enhanced the communication and closeness of these two communities with other Tamil communities around the world and have helped further the sustainability of art, language, culinary and religious practices. Muslim Tamils in Medan are experiencing a crisis of identity as Tamils because they are Muslim and many cultural identities conflict with Islamic teachings. Cross-ethnic marriage, assimilation with the non-Tamil community is strong enough to influence changes in cultural orientation, the identity that is still embedded in the Tamil Muslim community can only be found in weddings, culinary and some cultural adaptation practices. At the same time, as citizens of descent, they face the construction of a citizenship identity, becoming Tamils who live in Indonesia or become Indonesians as ethnic Tamils.

AbstractThe first Scandinavian records appeared in 1899. By 1925, over 27,000 sides had been made in the region, and recordings had become an established part of musical life. Half of the recordings were made by the Gramophone Company, the market leader, but there were at least a dozen competing firms. The companies had to find out by trial and error what types of music would be attractive to customers. Early recording artists were mostly well-known personalities from opera, theatre or music halls, and their repertoire had already been tried on the stage. Most Scandinavian records were pressed in Germany or the United Kingdom, and the companies also promoted their international repertoire in the region, but customers preferred local artists. A hundred years ago, opera singers were the only internationally known recording artists. Popular music was tied to local languages and traditions, and a demand for imported popular music only emerged after World War One, with the growing popularity of modern dance music.

Ulos is a traditional Batak clothing that we can find in traditional events; birth, marriage, death and other Batak traditional ceremonies such as: Mandailing, Pakpak, Dairi, Sipirok-Angkola and Karo. Apart from being a typical cloth in the Batak community, Ulos is believed to be able to create a feeling of warmth and raise tondi (raga) because of the 'sacred' element inherent in Ulos. In the past, Ulos cloth was woven by 'spiritual' weavers using natural dyes. Ulos cloth is also a regional marker cloth; social level, and clan (surname). So not just any Ulos cloth can be given to someone or the community. Batak Opera Training Center (PLOt) Pematang Siantar. North Sumatra is one of the Ulos cloth user communities in every activity. The Batak Opera Group has undoubtedly existed until now. His performances reached many countries. The plays that are played also tell about the life of the Batak people and the epics of Batak heroism. The group's mission is to protect cultural heritage and develop traditional arts. For this reason, every stage of the PLOt is faithful in using hand-woven Ulos cloth. Judging from the patterns, colors and motifs of the Ulos fabrics used by PLOt, they seem "luxurious" because of their artistic value. This, of course, is not just any modification made by PLOt because the function and meaning of Ulos cloth is culturally meaningful with customary provisions. In this regard, we tried to examine the function and meaning of the Ulos cloth in the Batak Opera Training Center group which is domiciled in Pematang Siantar. North Sumatra. This research is also part of the task of the Center for Traditional Clothing Studies, which is not only examining patterns and motifs but furthermore the use of Ulos cloth outside of traditional events and traditional ceremonies. Keywords: ulos, custom, meaning, function, PLOt.
