Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a serious significant public health problem, since it’s negative impact on physicaland psycological development, behavior and work capacity. There are many risk factors influencing the development of IDA.A cross-sectional study has been conducted in 301 Junior High School students at East Jakarta in January-February 2000.A structural questionnaire, physical, cell blood count (CBC) and Serum Iron ( SI ) examinations were performed. We foundsome of the many variables were connected with IDA by using bivariat analysis. Anemia was found in 41 out of 301 students(13,6%) and only 25 children (8.3%) suffered from IDA. Among 179 female students, only 33 children (18.5%) were anemicand 20 out of 33 (12.0%) have IDA. Bivariat analysis revealed a significant association between IDA with sex, parent’seducation, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) scores, and menstruation. It is concluded that the prevalence of IDA in thisstudy was lower than found in some previous studies in Indonesia. Gender, menstruation, low educated parents, and low FFQscores were risk factors for IDA.

Anemia is commonly found in Indonesia especially in infants, children and adolescents. Adolescent  suffering a double burden of anemia including iron deficiency anemia and carriers of thalassemia. Iron deficiency anemia can affect brain function, growth and development process , and  weaken  the immune system. Thalassemia is a chronic disease passed down from parents to their children. The symptoms of these two diseases are very difficult to distinguish, namely  mild anemia and sometimes asymptomatic. The incidence of new cases needs to be controlled, one of them is by using screening tests and education to the community. This program was carried out in the form of increasing the knowledge of health workers, junior high school teachers and students regarding thalassemia and iron deficiency anemia regarding talasemia screening policy from the Health Ministry. The method used is survey, observation and socialization lecture. The results of this study showed an increase in knowledge of Tempuran Middle School students, teachers, and health workers after socialization of thalassemia. The voluntary level of students to join the anemia screening program was 81.89% in Combat 1 Junior High School, and 66.67% in Combat Middle School 2. One of the nutritional problems that often occurs among adolescents is iron deficiency anemia. Especially for adolescent girls who have a higher risk of anemia than adolescent boys. Based on data from Riskesdas 2018, the prevalence of anemia in adolescents aged 15-24 years is 32%, meaning that there are still anemia problems in Indonesia that have not been resolved. The purpose of this community dedication activity is to provide education about iron deficiency anemia for adolescent girls using leaflet media. The target of this community dedication activity is adolescent girls aged 12-19 years in the JABODETABEK area. The community dedication activity is carried out online through the WhatsApp group due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are 31 adolescent girls who participated in this community dedication activity. This community dedication activity consists of three stages including pretest, education with leaflets, and posttest. The amount and types of pretest and posttest questions are the same. The amount of questions given is 15 questions. The correct answer is given a score of 10 and the wrong one is given a score of 0. The level of knowledge of adolescent girls is categorized as 3 groups, which is less if the correct answer is <60%, sufficient if the correct answer is 60-80%, and good if the correct answer is >80%. Most of the adolescent girls are in the age range of 17-19 years (54.8%). The results showed that there was an increase in knowledge about iron deficiency anemia in adolescent girls. The results of the Wilcoxon signed rank test showed significantly different pretest and posttest results (p-value = 0.000), so it can be concluded that providing education using leaflets can help increase knowledge of iron deficiency anemia for adolescent girls.

Male contribution towards couple infertility is increasing but is less discussed. We aimed to assess the knowledge about iron deficiency anemia (IDA) as a contributor to male infertility in students at health colleges of Jazan University. A multicentric, cross-sectional survey included 910 participants and 768 participants qualified as per our inclusion criteria. The questions were categorized as: Model 1—knowledge about IDA-induced male infertility; Model 2—knowledge about IDA. The average knowledge of IDA causing male infertility is very low among students. The 18–20 years age group had a lesser score for either knowledge of IDA (M2; p-value = 0.047) or total (p-value < 0.0001) compared to the older group. In addition, female students were significantly more likely to be better in achieving higher total scores (p-value = 0.023) as well as M2 scores (p-value < 0.0001) when compared to the respective male category. On the other hand, males were significantly better in scoring for M1 (p-value = 0.004) compared to females. Awareness about iron deficiency anemia as a factor in male infertility may reduce the infertility burden, arising from a preventable factor, in the Jazan region.
