The paper is dedicated to the problem of creating a network of public spaces in the downtown area of a major city as an effective means of its humanization. The goal of the work is to justify and develop a graphical model of the network of public spaces in the structure of the downtown area of a major city on example of Kharkiv. Analysis of the scientific works of foreign and domestic authors has shown that the issues relating to the formation of a spatially integrated network of public spaces have not been subjected to special scientific scrutiny. The use of the law of isomorphism of structures of urban planning systems suggested that a network of public spaces could have a linear-nodal spatial organization. It is shown that open public spaces are located along the streets and should be seen as part of the city’s communication framework. The placement of a significant variety of small public service elements on the first floors of the city center neighborhood development contributes to the formation of public spaces along the streets. These pedestrian spaces providing connections to subway stations are “linear” components of the network. The presence of open, undeveloped spaces in areas close to the entrances to subway stations creates attractive conditions for the formation of new types of public spaces. On the basis of analysis of placement of 8 subway stations in the structure of the downtown area of Kharkiv there was justified the assumption that it is their areas that are considered to be “nodal” elements of the networks of public spaces. In this way, a spatially integrated network of public spaces is created and presents an effective means of humanizing the urban environment as a whole. The study of the architectural and urban construction of the network of public spaces in the city structure led to the conclusion of the effectiveness of such a measure in social, economic and aesthetic aspects.

The purpose of this work is to consider the factors influencing on the features of architectural and urban organization of public spaces in the areas of subway stations as important resources for the development of their network in the structure of the largest cities in Ukraine. Public spaces are considered as publicly accessible areas of the city where informal communications and short-term recreation of citizens take place. The location of these objects in the structure of the transport and communication framework of the city creates the preconditions for the formation of a kind of integrated network of public spaces that perform a special communicative function of the city community. This determines the relevance of this work. The need for such spaces is defined by theoretical understanding and a professional approach to their creation. The study has identified the factors that affect the functional and planning parameters of public spaces in the areas of subway stations’ influence. They consist of three groups: - characteristics of the urban situation; - type and rank of the transport interchange; - the needs of passengers who use the subway station, adjacent public transport stations or visit the area for other reasons. The following conclusions have been made on the base of the study: In the zones of subway stations’ influence the locations are formed that fully correspond to the characteristics of "public spaces". These new functional and spatial formations are one of the complex and dynamic elements of the system of public spaces of the city which have significant potential for the formation of an integral network of spaces of this type. It has been improved the necessity of the spatial organization of public spaces in the areas of subway stations’ influence in order to optimize their functional and planning organization and landscaping. It has been defined and researched the factors of influence on the organization of public spaces which will allow to define receptions and principles of their functional and planning organization in various urban organization situations and features of formation of the given objects’ network.

Abstract. The article substantiates the need to complete the formation of an integrated network of pedestrian spaces in the historic center of Kiev. Now the historic center covers three hills - the Upper Town, Pechersk and Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. However, the problem of creating an integrated network of pedestrian connections in the historic center of Kyiv has not yet been solved, and its formation is one of the urgent tasks today. After all, the creation of a holistic system of pedestrian ways in the historic city makes it possible to increase its tourist potential and ensure the preservation and development of historical and cultural heritage. The author proposes a method of spatial analysis to assess the state of public spaces in the city. The author's comparative analysis of two cities in the UK confirmed the importance and cost-effectiveness of pedestrian public spaces. It is noted that the existing transport infrastructure of the city of Kyiv does not provide for the formation of new pedestrian zones. The author analyzes the central squares of Kyiv: Independence Square, Troitska, Tolstoy, European, Sofiyska, Mykhailivska, Lvivska and Peremohy Squares in terms of comfortable pedestrian movement and the availability of public places. It turned out that in terms of transport accessibility, they are convenient, but not suitable for pedestrians; by use - have mainly administrative, political functions; sometimes - cultural; by category of comfort - are inconvenient, there are no sanitary conditions, places for sitting, rest, greens; these are mainly transport interchanges; by category of social function - meeting places, commercial spaces; there are no signs of identity. Means of forming a network of pedestrian public spaces and proposals for the design of individual fragments of the city are proposed. The author determines how transit space and stationary spaces are used, whether it is possible to use them as a citywide public space and connect it to the main axis along Volodymyrska and Khreschatyk.

The idea of this research was developed as a result of the new direction of urban development taking place in The Arab Republic of Egypt along with the emergence of new cities that mark a new age in Egypt’s modern history. This paper also highlights the importance of completing important national projects with the highest possible standards and least possible cost in order to satisfy the people’s needs.Egyptian artists have always excelled in the field of architecture as their creations are still present today and they all mark these architects’ interaction with the natural environment in terms of the materials used.  These characteristics are now a way to distinguish Egyptian artists because of the different analyses carried out for the modes of movement, the intersection of lines, shapes, light, colors, and consistency along with the various cultural values that contribute to the enrichment of Egyptian history.   There is a set of visual determinants and characteristics that are exclusive to every city, this, in turn, shows each city in its aesthetic form that distinguishes it from others. This is dependent on a group of environmental and design-based characteristics that are used when aesthetically designing a city. This is starting with its morphological model, which is concerned with the overall aesthetic design of the city, and ending with applying the values of the design of urban coordination of sites (Landscape), which is concerned with the design of public spaces. A good design is one that applies all the visual and aesthetic determinants needed for their formation. The concept of identity is considered one of those concepts that are hard to accurately explain, as it’s more of an ecological concept rather than a scientific one. Identity plays a leading role in the design of buildings that manage to reflect the environment which it’s in, as it is considered the main criterion for measuring the success of the community. On that basis, the identities of buildings are developed as a result of employing specific elements. The built environment therefore is an effective means through which the community can confirm its identity and distinguish itself among other communities.

Understanding the role of urban public spaces in today’s historic Spanish Mediterranean cities is a key priority for researchers and urban professionals. Increasingly, social media showcases users’ preferences, a trend that can provide an indication as to why some urban public spaces are preferred over others. This research focuses on preferred urban public spaces in historic cities in the province of Alicante (Spain) and has two objectives: to identify their urban morphological features; and, to recognise similar traits in terms of their location within the urban structure. The method involved: first, analysing Foursquare social media data on user preferences about urban public spaces; second, studying spatial and functional urban attributes; and third, recognising their role within the city structure. The results demonstrate that the preferred urban spaces share morphological attributes; a central position in the urban structure; mixed-use ground floor activities; and the presence of relevant urban public facilities.

Recently, urbanism interventions have caused major changes in the spatial and physical structure of Iran cities. These interventions have changed primary spatial organization pattern and the city′s main structure. In the process of this physical development in many historical cities, it has not been enough attention to the structure and historic core shape of the city and subsequently, problems such as the inability to adapt to the new physical changes, the lack of appropriate linkage with the available network structure and its diminution in the minds of people, have aggravated the historical cores. Recognition of the main cities structure and skeleton based on analysis of all components of cities is difficult and impossible. Space organization theory (space syntax) is one of the methods that has responded to the needs of cities’ spatial analysis. This research, with the aim of investigating the impact of urban development plans on the spatial structure of the historical boundaries of Urmia investigating and analyzing the city structure in four important periods (2016-1996-1974-1930), using space organization method. Results of this study, demonstrated that was decreased functionality and coherence of the historical area and its relation to the totality of city structure affected by physical changes over time. And the inner structure of this area could not be linked to the city's overall structure. Also, a large part of the identity and physical values of texture are demolished by discontinuity of the main elements of the area. The functional importance of historical orders has been weakened and this means that rapid physical changes, had negative effects on the spatial structure of historical area.

The concept of multi-sensory perception of cities is one of the elements shaping the complete image of the city. It is an aspect as important to the recipient as the urban structure. The study of the multisensory record of public spaces gives a better chance to understand: the identity of the place, the changing dimensions of cultural heritage, local social problems, and even conditions influencing spatial decisions. Multisensory research has an implementation value and can be an important, previously unaccounted for factor, influencing the revitalization program and planning decisions. Therefore, it is so important to analyze the available literature on the subject, conduct scientific observation of the research area, create a proposal for a hybrid research methodology on multi-sensory recording of space and determine their relationship with activities in the field of urban planning. The trial area – selected public spaces of the Praga – Północ district in Warsaw was adopted according to predetermined criteria, the most important of which were: authentic urban tissue, downtown area, architectural and functional diversity of buildings.

This article analyzes the main problems of urban public spaces, because today public spaces can determine the future of cities. It is noted that parks are multifunctional public spaces in the urban environment, as they are an important element of the citywide system of landscaping and recreation, perform health, cultural, educational, aesthetic and environmental functions. The article notes that the need for easily accessible and well-maintained urban parks remains, however, the state of parks in many cities of Russia remains unsatisfactory, requiring reconstruction. A brief historical background of the Park of Culture and Rest of the Soviet period in Omsk is expounded, the analysis of the existing territory of the Park is presented. It is revealed that the Park, being the largest public space in Omsk, does not meet the requirements of modern urbanism, although it represents a great potential for designing the space for the purpose of recreation of citizens. Performed functional zoning scheme of the territory of the Park in question, where its division into functional areas destined for active recreational users of the Park is presented, considered the interests of senior citizens, people with limited mobility, etc. Reconstruction of Parks of the Soviet period can provide the city with additional recreational opportunities, as well as increase its tourist attractiveness.
