Objective: assessment of dental caries intensity in children with disturbances in tooth formation living in radiologically contaminated territories as a result of the Chornobyl NPP accident. Materials and methods. Children aged 6-14 years old (n = 1470) suffering from disturbances in tooth formation (DTF) with the residents of radiologically contaminated territories (n = 528) among them were enrolled in the study. The DTF subtypes were assayed, namely the systemic enamel hypoplasia (SEH) and molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). Personal radiation history was recorded. Intensity of caries and caries of surfaces in the mixed (i.e. transitional) occlusion (df+DMF, dfs+DMFS coefficients) and permanent occlusion (DMF, DMFS coefficients) was identified. Results. Caries intensity in the exposed children suffering DTF with mixed and permanent dental occlusion was significantly higher vs. either in children exposed to ionizing radiation with no DTF or in the control group (р < 0.001, р < 0.001 and р < 0.05, р < 0.001 correspondingly). The highest caries intensity of the permanent teeth was revealed in the residents of contaminated territories suffering SEH (6.95 ± 2.3) vs. cases of MIH (5.68 ± 1.97) as a result of nonsymmetrical teeth involvement. Conclusions. The highest values of df+DMF, dfs+DMFS coefficients were diagnosed in children with a mixed dental occlusion aged 6-14 years old living on territories contaminated as a result of the ChNPP accident as compared to the not exposed subjects and control group (7.2 ± 2.07 and 8.98 ± 2.4, р < 0.001). A very high intensity of caries and surface caries of permanent teeth (DMF = 6.79 ± 2.34, DMFS = 8.69 ± 2.75, р < 0.001) was established in children exposed to ionizing radiation and suffering DTF. Such a high intensity may be due to the impact of a set of negative factors including the ionizing radiation in low doses and peculiarities of economic component of social status of study subjects, namely the unbalanced diet. In case of permanent occlusion the intensity of caries and caries of tooth of in children survived after the ChNPP accident and suffering SEH was significantly (р < 0.05) higher compared to the persons suffering MIH. Key words: children, caries, disturbances in tooth formation, systemic enamel hypoplasia, molar-incisor hypomineralization, ionizing radiation, ChNPP accident.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of dental caries in patients with cleft lip and/or palate and their cleft-free sibling controls. Methods: The two subject groups (patient and control) comprised 106 participants. The former group consisted of 53 patients with cleft lip and/or palate, aged 12 to 29 years, who visited the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Hospital at Damascus University of Syria. The control group consisted of the patients’ siblings who had no clefts, and they were sex matched to the patient group. Dental caries were examined clinically and were reported using the decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index. The DMFT scores were compared between the two groups. Results: The author found an overall association of dental caries with the presence of cleft lip and/or palate (odds ratio  =  2.52; 95% confidence interval  =  1.389–4.574; p < .05). The DMFT index scores were proportionally higher in patients with cleft lip and/or palate compared with the control group (p < .001). Conclusion: Subjects with cleft lip and palate are susceptible to dental caries independently of socioeconomic status.

Objective: This 3-year retrospective controlled clinical trial assessed the effect of a school-based oral health education program on caries incidence in children. Study design: A total of 240 students, aged 5 to 7 years, from two public schools in Monte Sião, Brazil, were included in this study. A school-based oral health education program was developed in one of the schools (experimental group), including 120 students, while the 120 students from the other school did not participate in the program (control group). All children were initially examined for dental caries (dmf-t), and after 3 years, 98 children from the experimental group and 96 from the control group were again examined and answered a questionnaire on oral health issues. The between-groups difference in caries incidence on permanent teeth was calculated using Poisson regression analyses. Logistic regression was used to observe the association between caries incidence and other variables. Results: More students from the experimental group stated knowing what was dental caries and declared that they use dental floss daily, but no significant differences in caries incidence was observed between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: The school-based oral health education program is not adequately efficient to decrease caries incidence after three years, but some issues about oral health knowledge could be slightly improved.

Background: The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been introduced as one of the complicated developmental disabilities impairing communication and behavioral, intellectual as well as social functioning describes diverse symptoms, such as difficulties in communication skills and social interactions. The present research has been performed to assess seriousness of the dental caries in conjunction with the oral cleanliness amongst children suffering from autism in comparison with a control group according to age groups and gender. Materials and Methods: This research involved 30 children aged 3-14 years (male, female) who suffered from autism and attended autism centers in Welfare Children Teaching Hospital in Baghdad province, Iraq, were selected for the study compared to 30 healthy children with the same age group. Plaque (PlI), Decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (dmfs, DMFS), calculus (CI) as well as Gingival (GI) indices have been applied for measuring the status of oral health for these two groups. The data of our research has been analyzed by SPSS 26. Results: The entire autism group was caries active. For primary dentition, a lower dmfs values were recorded for study in comparison with the controls, differences have been not significant in dmfs, while for permanent dentition, a higher DMFS values were recorded for study in comparison with the control group with statistically significant concerning DMFS (P < 0.05). Moreover, caries experience (DS and DMFS) among both genders were higher in the study group in comparison with the controls with a significant difference in female only. Total mean value of PlI in the study group has been greater than the controls with no statistically significant difference. In addition, total mean value of GI in the study group has been lower than the controls with no statistically significant difference. Furthermore, correlation coefficient between the caries experience of primary and permanent teeth with PlI and GI among study and control group showed no significant correlations seen in the study and control groups, all of them were positively correlated except (ds) with (GI) in control group which was negatively correlated with no significant correlation. Conclusion: children with ASD had higher dental caries severity regarding permanent teeth compared to normal subjects, plaque higher in autistic group than control group. Dental care planners must design preventing strategies for avoiding caries; procedures for oral care as well as educational programs for oral care and promotion for addressing diverse challenges facing the oral care in ASD.

Background: Dental agenesis is the most common developmental anomaly in humans, frequently associated with disorders in dental development and maturation. Aim: The purpose of this study is to determine radiographic variations in dental maturation in a group of Venezuelan children with dental agenesis. Study design: 1,188 panoramic radiographs, from healthy patients ages 5 to 12 years old were studied for agenesis of permanent teeth. Dental maturation was assessed by relative eruption and dental age according to Nolla, comparing children affected with dental agenesis to a stratified control group selected from the same population, excluding children with premature loss of primary teeth in the left quadrants and unclear radiographs. Descriptive analysis, and differences between means and medians (Student t test, Kruskall-Wallis p=0.05) were performed. Results: Medians for Nolla stages were similar between groups, with delay in tooth formation in the agenesis group for second molars (p<0.05) and maxillary lateral incisors and second premolars. Dental age was significantly underestimated for both groups, −0.89 (±0.78) for the control group and −1.20 (±0.95) for the study group. Tooth eruption was similar between groups. Conclusion: Dental age was significantly delayed in Venezuelan children with dental agenesis, with variable significance for tooth formation of studied teeth.

Modern domestic preventive dentistry has success in the theory of the origin and development of major dental diseases, practice of treatment, including dental caries, and uses these results to prevent children’s diseases in the country. However, the desired effectiveness of preventive measures have not been achieved primarily among the population and individual level, taking into account some specific characteristics of residence region, etiology and pathogenesis of the demineralization phenomena of hard dental tissues in different periods of child’s development. Adverse environmental conditions and technogenic character are not taken into account, when air, soil and groundwater are oversaturated with environmental contaminants and toxicants. They cause fatal breakage in biochemical reactions and metabolic processes in childhood and at a young age, when defective dental health brings a lot of problems in the adult period of life, and, as a result, reduces the life. Investigation of dental health had been conducted in 251 preschool age children (first age group consisted of 3-4 years-old, II group consisted of 5-6 – years-old with 123 and 128 people respectively). In addition, all the observed children were divided into two groups depending on the use of prophylactic anti-caries interventions: the basic group was in compliance with the "Program- maximum" and control the "Program- minimum". Approximately 60 members were in the monitoring teams of different age groups. The "Program-minimum" included measures of general health, balanced diet with the significant restriction of carbohydrate and perform twice a day hygiene actions in the oral cavity. The “Program – maximum” also included the ingestion of calcium citrate and amino acids with SH-group of methionine. Such treatment and prophylactic complex has the adaptive, antioxidant, antidote and immune resolving action. It makes sense for neutralization of eco toxicants – heavy metals in the area of children’s residence. It was found that level of Fe and Zn was in the threatening degree of content, and Cd is moderate in the living environment of the examined children. It provokes and enhances the glycolytic processes in the oral cavity. Harmful effect of toxicants in the oral cavity, and also in a children's organism as a whole, was clearly fixed in the mineralization of the skeleton flat bones of children. It was revealed with densitometry of the calcaneus that 53 individuals had indicators, particularly BUA. They indicated the weakening of the skeleton mineralization. It indirectly pointed to problems in the hard tissues of the teeth. However, the use of treatment and prophylactic complex improved the bone structures density. The level of calcium and phosphate in the oral fluid of the observed individuals had recovered to optimal after three years of use of treatment and prophylactic complex, contributed to effective secondary mineralization both in temporary and in permanent teeth. Thus, the use of treatment and prophylactic complex in people of the basic group allowed quite convincingly and positively to impact on the incidence of caries of deciduous and permanent teeth. The rate of growth of dental caries intensity after three years of preventive interventions in the basic group was three times less than in the control group. At the same time, the caries preventive efficacy was 59-62%, and this is a very positive indicator. These results are evidence of proven necessity of prophylactic of dental health correction in children years of those people who reside in areas with a very complex technogenic environment due to metallurgical plants located in the Prydniprovsk region.

Objective of research. To analyze features of stomatological status indexes, relative length of telomeres and phenotype of immunocompetent cells of peripheral blood in children with chronological enamel hypoplasia – residents of Ukrainian territories, contaminated with radionuclides after the Chornobyl NPP accident. Materials and methods. The object of research is chronological enamel hypoplasia (CEH) of permanent teeth, and lymphocytes of peripheral blood (PB). The subject of research is the state of oral cavity hygiene, caries intensity, gingivitis severity degree, relative telomere length (RTL), and phenotype of immunocompetent cells (ICC) of peripheral blood (PB). Methods of the research: stomatological, immunological (flow cytofluorometry), molecular genetic (fluorescence in situ hybridization-flow cytometry – flow-FISH), statistical. Results. Two types of the analysis of the stomatologic status, RTL and phenotype of PB ICC were carried out: the first is the comparison of indexes of the combined group of children with anamnesis complicated by radiation (group No. 1 with CEH + group No. 2 without CEH) comparing with the control group No. 3; the second is the analysis of indeces of the group No. 1 comparing with the same markers in children of the groups No. 2 and No. 3. The first stage of the analysis shows thesignificant worsening of oral hygien indices , high DMFTand DMFS in children with permanent dentition, higher degree of gums inflamation and moresignificant RTL shortening in children of the combined group (No. 1 + No. 2) comparing with the control. Changes of the same character, but more expressed observed during the another analysis concerning the children with anamnesis complicated by radiation and CEH comparing with the control. Reliable changes in the content of PB ICC subpopulations in the examined children of all groups were not identified. Conclusions. 1. Inchildren with CEH, complicated by ionizing radiation (IR) influence in low doses diapason the highest degree of stomatological status disorders comparing with the examined reference and control groups was determined: unsatisfactory and poor oral cavity hygiene according to OHI-S (1.76±0.41, р˂0.0001 and р˂0.0001, respectively) and Silness-Loe index (1.73±0.45, р˂0.0001 and р˂0.0001, respectively); very high intensity of dental caries ((DMFT=7.0±2.29, р=0.003and р˂0.0001; DMFS=8.74±2.58, р=0.0004 and р˂0.0001, respectively); mean degree of gingivitis severity (РМА 47.55±14.27 %, р˂0.0001 and р˂0.0001, respectively). 2. At CEH, which occurs due to the complex of negative factors during first years of life, including IR in residents of territories with effective doses more than 1.0 mSv/year, reliable shortening of relative telomeres length of PB lymphocytes comparing with the control group (15.17±3.20, р=0.0002) was found. Reliable differences in the content of peripheral blood immunocompetent cells when compared the examined groups were not identified. 3. Results of indices of the groups No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 comparison are agreed with the data, obtained in result of dispersive analysis that allowed to separate the most informative indices concerning stomatological examination of children: OHI-S index (F=34.92; р˂0.001); Silness-Loe index (F=27.01; р˂0.001); dft+DMFT (F=82.23; р˂0.001); dfs+DMFS (F=49.41; р˂0.001); DMFT (F=13.94; р˂0.001); DMFS(F=19.41; р˂0.001); РМА (F=41.25; р˂0.001); RTL (F=7.53; р=0.001).

The purpose of our study was to determine the intensity of dental caries and the level of oral hygiene in boys and girls, depending on age and conducting remineralizative therapy in the observed group of children with the aim of prevention of dental caries. The study was carried out with the informed consent of parents of examining children. We carried out dental examination of 60 schoolchildren in Vinnytsya, aged 6–8 years old, who were divided into two even groups, near 30 persons in evey group who was provided remineralizative therapy of dental hard tissue using the preparation “Bifluorid 10” VOCO (Germany). In the article the clinical discussion of high efficiency of preventive remineralizative therapy of dental hard tissues in children 6-8 years is presented. According to the results of the primary examination in the observed children, it was found that the average of oral hygiene index of Fedorova-Volodkina was 2.3±0.16 scores in the main group and 2.31±0.13 scores in the control group, which indicates an unsatisfactory level of oral hygiene in both groups. Dental caries was determined in 100% of cases among the examined children, caries intensity indexes DMFT+df were corresponded to 5.57±1.04 in the main group and 5.7±0.95 in the control group. The intensity of the color of the TER-test in the basic observation was — 3.88±0.75 in the main group and 4.19±0.91 the control group. The oral hygiene index slightly increased after 12 months of research. In children of the main group it was 1.52±0.12 and 1.58±0.15 in the control group, which corresponds to satisfactory oral hygiene. However, in general, during the period of our investigation, the oral hygiene index was significantly improved in comparing to the primary scores on 33.9% in the main group and on 31.64% in the control group. The index of growth of caries intensity was — 7 (23%) in the control group and in the main group — 1 (3.3%) in the main one. The parameters of the TER test were within the range of 2.1±0.3 scores in the basic and 3.93±0.7 scores in the control groups, which corresponds to the improvement of the mineralization of the dental hard tissue (p <0.05). Consequently, the problem of high dental caries intensity and caries prevalence of primary and permanent teeth suggests about cariogenic situation in the oral cavity of children during the period of the eruption of the first permanent molars. Professional oral hygiene, the formation of regular oral hygienic habits, deep fluoridation using the Bifluorid 10 VOCO (Germany), not only improve the oral hygiene status, but also reduce the growth index of dental caries and have a high efficiency of prevention of dental caries.

The defeat teeth multiple caries leads to their premature loss, violates the chewing function, which affects the development of the dental system in the period of formation of permanent teeth and leads to the formation of anomalies of maxillofacial area. In experiment were 30 white rats of both sexes and 30 three months white rat pups with a healthy, without pathologically changed tissues of the teeth and periodontium. In experiments on rats 35-day monitoring damaged by caries white rats showed that when using liquid with a positive redox potential is reduction of the area of the zones carious lesions on the 14th day – by 23%, 21 day – 41%, at 28 days – 59%, 35 day – 69%. The remaining liquid didn’t cause changes in the dimensions of zones of caries in time. For long (8 weeks) oral use a white rat pups liquids with negative redox potential and the subsequent 30-day getting glucoso-lactose diet the incidence of dental caries was only 3% in the control group 86%. The article shows that the liquids with positive and negative redox potential doesn’t have a damaging effect on the mucous membrane of the mouth cavity and the hard tissue of teeth, however optimize the recovery processes in case of chronic generalized periodontitis moderate.

Objective: To compare levels of dental caries, bacterial dental plaque, gingivitis, enamel defects, and caries-related microflora in children with and without craniosynostosis. Study group: Fifty-seven children with craniosynostosis and their matched controls. Outcome measures: The decayed, missing, and filled teeth and surfaces in both the deciduous (dmfs and dmft) and the permanent dentition (DMFS and DMFT). The plaque and gingivitis scores and developmental enamel defects were also recorded. The caries-related microflora was sampled using an alginate swab and the prevalence of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus and Candida species were recorded. Results: The dmfs (p < .02) and dmft (p < .01) were significantly greater in the control children. The plaque score for the deciduous dentition only (p < .02) and also the gingivitis score for the permanent teeth only (p < .008) in the craniosynostosis group were significantly greater. The total aerobic bacterial count (p < .004), anaerobic count (p < .002), and Candida count (p < .05) were significantly greater in the control group. The proportion of S. mutans both as a percentage of the total anaerobic count (p < .04) and the total streptococcal count (p < .05) was significantly greater in the control group.

The objective of this paper was to assess the effects of school-based fluoride mouthrinsing (S-FMR: weekly using 0.2% NaF solution) in two groups of school children with different periods of exposure to S-FMR in elementary school. Subjects were the S-FMR group consisted of 599 children, participated for six years. The control group consisted of 282 children, participated for less than one year in the sixth year of elementary school. From the results of the present survey, the caries reduction rate of S-FMR in the permanent teeth was 36.6% for DMFT and 42.8% for DMFS, and person rates with DMF, DMFT, DMFS, and CO (questionable caries under observation) were inhibited in both boys and girls. Girls in the control group showed clearly higher values for all parameters of dental caries because of earlier teeth eruption; however, no gender differences were observed in the S-FMR group. As caries prevalence in the first molars accounted for about 85% regardless of participation to S-FMR, and first molar caries were more common in the mandible than in the maxilla, consideration should be given to preventive measures against pit-and-fissure-caries in addition to S-FMR.
