The study was conducted to evaluate the potentiality of potato as an alternative source of carbohydrate in fish feed and its effect on the growth performance, glucose level and survivability of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The experiment was designed into four treatments with three replications in each including control T1 (feed without rice bran and potato), T2 (feed with rice bran), T3 (feed with raw potato) and T4 (feed with boiled potato). Tilapia fry (average 6.27±0.07 g) were randomly distributed in each treatment as 40 fish per 300L tank and feed with experimental diets (protein 35%). Significantly higher (P<0.05) survival rate of the fishes were observed in T4 (85%) followed by T2 (72.5%), T3 (57.5%) and T1 (47.5%). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly lower in T4 (2.76) compared to T2 (2.89) T3 (3.2) and T1 (3.93). Specific growth rate (SGR) was significantly higher (P<0.05) in T4 (3.11%) followed by T2 (2.94%), T3 (2.85%) and T1 (2.68%). Higher (P<0.05) condition factor (CF) was also observed in T4 (3.19) compared to T2 (2.85), T3 (2.77) and T1 (2.64). Higher glucose level was found in T4 (P<0.05) compared to T2, T3 and T1. The water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and phosphate were not significantly (P>0.05) differed among the treatments. The results indicated that boiled potato treated feed would be effective as energy rich growth promoter in tilapia culture. However, further investigation is needed in farm condition adding varying levels of potato in feed. Ann. Bangladesh Agric. (2019) 23(1) : 79-89

Abstract Understanding the nutritional requirements and production of fish feed is essential to the development and sustainability of aquaculture for the matured feed mill practices. Fish feed management includes choosing the right feed, using a correct feeding method, calculating the feeding cost and ensuring the cost effectiveness of fish farm. The purpose of the present study was to feed the fishes with four different feeds and assessment of growth performance by length weight relationships. The growth analysis was executed by measuring FCR and related indices in gift tilapia oreochromis niloticus. Four feed composition was selected without any chemical contamination. In the present study fishes were collected from the golden farm, Neyyattinkara, Thiruvananthapuram district, South India. Fishes were introduced into four different tanks of well oxygenated good quality water. In each experimental tank, 20 fishes were introduced. For each experimental container a specific feed was fixed from 4 different diets. Every day feed was given to the fishes. They were fed two times for the period of 3 months. They were maintained to assess their growth performance. Four types of feeds used for the present study are control diet, diet 1, diet 2 and diet 3. Measurement of length and weight was measured on every 15 days interval. Based on the length-weight data, growth analysis was carried out by calculating relative growth (RG), relative growth rate (RGR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and the Fulton’s condition factor. The results of mean length in diet3proved the highest length of 6.455 ± 0.46cm and diet one contain lowest length of 5.03 ± 0.68cm. Highest weight of 96.8 ± 0.37g was recorded in diet3 and lowest weight obtained for the control diet (3.645 ± 0.306 g). In growth analysis the relative growth of fish was estimated in diet 3 having high relative growth (11.91). Relative growth rate was elevated in diet 3(1.5597). The upper limit of specific growth rate was 1.9146% observed in diet 3. The feed conversion ratio was maximum in diet 3 (58.06) and minimum in control diet (36). The highest k value in Fulton's condition factor was noticed in diet 3(88.32).All experimental results proved that live Azolla [D3] was a superior feed for the present trials.

Tilapia cultivation has the potential to be developed in Indonesia, especially in South Sulawesi. However, the obstacle faced in tilapia cultivation is feed; the price is relatively high because the raw materials are still imported. One of the efforts to overcome dependence on imported feed raw materials is using local raw materials, namely rice bran. This study aims to determine the best type of probiotic in hydrolyzing rice bran flour into artificial feed on survival and conversion ratio of tilapia fish feed. This research was conducted in Sidenreng Rappang Regency. The test animals used were tilapia larvae with an average size of 1.03 g. The maintenance container is a tarpaulin pond with a size of 1 m x 1 m x 1 m filled with 85 L of freshwater. The study was designed using a completely randomized design consisting of four treatments and three replications. The fermenting materials used as treatment were Bacillus sp., Lactobacillus sp., Aspergillus nigers, Yeast (Acetobacter). The test feed was given to 20 tilapia larvae stocked in each container for 60 days of rearing. The survival data and feed conversion ratio for tilapia were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that tilapia fed fermented rice bran feed using the fermenter Lactobacillus sp. had a significant effect on survival (SR) with a value of 85% and the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of tilapia with a value of 2.23.

Aflatoxin contamination, particularly common in cultured fishes in Asian countries, are considered unsafe both for fish and human health. However, the presence of aflatoxin in cultured fish feed and their effect are still under estimated in Bangladesh. The present study aimed to assess the effects of aflatoxin on growth performance and residues in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings. Fish feed were treated with several concentration of aflatoxin as 0 ppb (T0, control), 25 ppb (T1), 50 ppb (T2) and 100 ppb (T3) and fed the tilapia fingerlings (n=10) in individual glass aquaria (24×12×12 inch, 105-litre capacity) conditions for 12 weeks. Comparatively higher body length (cm) and weight gain (g) were observed in treatment T0 (1.68 and 4.98) and T1 (1.60 and 5.48) than those of treatment T2 (1.31 and 4.06) and T3 (1.20 and 3.10), respectively. The specific growth rate (SGR) were almost similar in treatment T0 (52%), T1 (51%) and T2 (52%) whereas declined significantly (p<0.05) in T3 (39%). Higher survival rate was also demonstrated in treatment T0 (90%) and T1 (90%) whereas significantly decreased in treatment T2 (60%) and T3 (40%). The residue of aflatoxin was not detected in T0 and T1. On the contrary, the residual effect in tilapia fingerling was evident in T2 and T3 treatment. The findings of the present study revealed that aflatoxin contaminated feed is harmful for the growth performance and survival of O. niloticus fingerlings. Further study is necessary to safeguard the aquaculture production as well as to produce healthy food for human consumption.

Aquaculture is an activity to develop, obtain, reproduce and produce a fishery with the help of human resources. One of the cultivation practices is wader fish (Rashbora argyrotaenia) which is known for its very slow growth and relatively small size. This study aims to determine the growth rate of wader fish with different feeds in Blado Kulon Village, Tegalsiwalan, Probolinggo. The feed used was feed A in the form of fish pellets as a control, feed B consisting of a mixture of conch flour, soybean flour, bran, and tapioca flour, while feed C consisted of a mixture of conch flour, cassava leaf flour, bran and tapioca flour. The study was conducted for 42 days. The parameters measured in this study were temperature, DO, and pH, as well as observing the growth in absolute weight, specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate, and feed concentration ratio (FCR). Observations were analyzed using One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and further tests were carried out using the Duncan test. The results showed that different feeding did not have a significant effect on growth rate, absolute weight, feed conversion ratio, and survival of wader fish. Water quality parameters measured include temperature with an average of 28.42oC - 28.54 oC, while pH has an average of 7.42 - 7.50, and dissolved oxygen (DO) with an average of 5.54 - 6, 23 mg / L.

Thai pangus polyculture with carps has been increasing for its high potential, however very few attempts were made to compare its growth using different types of feed. A research was undertaken to assess the effect of three types of feed on growth of Thai pangus (Pangasius hypophthalmus) and rohu (Labeo rohita) in polyculture system for 11 months from 15 May 2005 to 15 April 2006 in Khulna. Growth performance using Hand-made Feed (F1) was compared with two commercial fish feed, Sunney Feed (F2) and Saudi-Bangla Feed (F3) in three respective treatments of T1, T2 and T3. All treatments were carried out in triplicate at 24700/ha for Thai pangus and 4940/ha for rohu. Average initial weight of Thai pangus and rohu were 4.5 and 33.5g respectively. Growth performance was influenced by feed type. Average final weight of Thai pangus and rohu were 820 and 710; 846 and 770; and 872 and 717g with specific growth rate 1.58 and 0.93; 1.59 and 0.95 and 1.60 and 0.93 % day -1 in T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Feed conversion ratio was estimated 2.3 in T1, 2.1 in T2 and 1.96 in T3. The result showed a typical increasing trend of final weight and specific growth rate of Thai pangus along with the increasing of feed protein level. But rohu showed highest growth in T2 where protein level was 26-30% which was lower than that of T3 (Protein level 28-32%). The study suggests that suitable protein level and quality feed is required for adequate growth of fish. ABSTRACT: Essential oils of plants whose main compound is citral showed beneficial effects when added to fish feed. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the dietary effect of the addition of citral on zootechnical parameters and digestive enzyme activities of Centropomus undecimalis. Juveniles were fed for 45 days with diets containing different amounts of citral (0.0 - control, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mL per kg of diet). The water quality parameters were kept stable during the experiment and no mortality was observed. At the end of the experimental period, the treatment 0.5 mL citral per kg of diet had the lowest weight gain and specific growth rate, and the highest feed conversion, while the same parameters did not differ between the other treatments. Pepsin activity was higher in the stomach of fish fed with 0.5 mL citral per kg of diet and amylase activity was higher in the intestine of fish fed with 0.5 and 2.0 mL citral per kg of diet compared to the control group. Intestinal lipase activity was higher in all groups that were fed with citral compared to the control group. Chymotrypsin and trypsin activities showed no difference between groups. Consequently, dietary addition of citral at any of the levels tested is not recommended for common snook.
