The work was carried out to compare the yield and quality of local Karacadag rice variety with the Osmancık-97 in conventional and organic agriculture conditions. In the organic agricultural conditions higher values were obtained compared to conventional conditions. Flowering took 82.6 days, 1000-kernel weight (31.38 g) and non-fractured rice yield were 61.75%. Local Karacadag rice variety under the organic conditions showed significantly higher values compared to Osmancık-97 breeding variety took 87.3 days for flowering, 128.2 days for ripening days. Plant height (84.1 cm), number of tillering in plants (2.82), number of bunches in the m2 (369.3), kernel number of bunch (56.5), bunch length (15.9 cm), biological yield (13440 kg/ha), yield for unit area (4681 kg/ha) and non-fractured rice yield (64.7%) were observed. While there was no difference between the two rice varieties with regards to the kernel weight of bunch. Local Karacadag variety proved its ability to adapt to the ecological conditions of the region. It is suggested that the cultivation of the Karacadag rice cultivar in organic agriculture conditions may be expanded in the region.

Abstract. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal harvest time to achieve maximum milled rice yield and quality of white rice in some newly introduced Italian rice varieties grown under agro-ecological conditions in the region of Kocani town, Republic of North Macedonia. During the 2014 and 2015, fourteen rice varieties were cultivated to estimate the milled rice yield and broken kernels from three different harvest times. From each rice variety, samples with moisture content between 20-22% (I variant), 18-20% (II variant) and 16-18% (III variant) were taken. From the third harvest variant the highest percentage of milled rice yield (65.23%) was obtained but also the highest rate of broken kernels (12.79%). From the remaining two harvests, almost identical milled rice yields were received (64.19% from the first variant and 64.33% from the second variant), but in terms of broken kernels, there were significant differences. The optimum moisture content during the harvest in order to obtain maximum yield and quality of milled rice ranged from 18% to 20%. The varieties Arsenal, Sprint and Mirko had the most favorable values for milled rice yield and broken kernels.

Most locally cultivated rice varieties in Ethiopia have low physical (low head rice yield, high broken rice yield, and high percentage of chalkiness) and cooking qualities (low water uptake ratio and swelling ratio). Parboiling, a process which involves soaking, steaming, and drying, has been identified as a key technique to improve cooking and milling quality of rice. The current study is aimed at elucidating the effect of parboiling on physical and cooking qualities of three rice varieties (Gumara, Edget, and Narica4) collected from Fogera National Rice Research and Training Center, Amhara region, Ethiopia. Each rice variety was subjected to different soaking temperatures (40°C, 50°C, 60°C, 70°C, and 80°C) and steaming time (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minutes). The treatment effect results indicated that parboiling has a significant effect (P<0.05) on head rice yield and percentage of broken rice with increased soaking temperature and steaming time as compared to the control. For instance, percent head rice yield increased as soaking temperature (from 40 to 80°C) and steaming time (from 10 to 50 min) increased: for Gumara, from 4.07 to 93.6%, for Edget, 9.47 to 96.53, and from 3.20 to 91.67 for Narica4. Percentage chalkiness had decreased as soaking temperature and steaming time increased: 97.33% to 0.00% for Gumara, 97.80% to 0.00% for Edget, and 100.00% to 0.13% for Narica4 as compared to 100% for control of all varieties. The minimum cooking time was identified as 16-23 min for Gumara, 16-23 min for Edget, and 15-20 min for Narica4 rice varieties. The result of the present study clearly showed that parboiling with high soaking temperature and steaming time increased the head rice yield, water uptake ratio, decreased percentage chalkiness, and enhanced the overall quality of the rice varieties.

A field experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of molybdenum (Mo) with recommenced chemical fertilizer and organic matter on yield and quality of rice cv. BRRI dhan 30. Three levels of Mo viz. 0, 100 and 200 ppm were applied with recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (80, 15, 40, 10, 1.5 kg ha-1NPKSZn) and organic matter as both cow dung and compost. Plant height, number of ear bearing tillers hill-1, straw yield and biological yield were maximum when 100 ppm Mo was applied with chemical fertilizer. Number of total spikelets panicle-1, grains panicle-1, nitrogen content, nitrogen uptake in grain and straw, and protein content in grain were recorded better when 100 ppm Mo was applied with cowdung. Those parameters were minimum when 0 ppm Mo was applied with either cowdung or compost or NPK. The best performance was obtained when 100 ppm Mo was applied either with recommended fertilizers or with cow dung/compost. The performance of rice with 200 ppm of Mo was better than no addition of Mo in respect of yield and yield contributing characters. Environmental contamination and the excessive use of inorganic fertilizers resulting in stagnant yields of field crops which necessitate the utilization of combined fertilization approach under changing climatic conditions. Current study was aimed to clarify the influence of several fertilizer sources (chemical, organic, organomineral fertilizers) on yield and quality of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.). The results revealed that the fertilizer sources significantly affected the yield of coriander cultivars. The absence of “Year x Variety x Fertilizer Type” interactions for any of the noted parameters signaled that the detected “Variety x Fertilizer Type” interactions were constant regardless of the year factor. The recorded values of traits according to fertilizer sources different for the plant height from 61.85 to 69.67 cm, number of branches from 5.98 to 7.71 (piece/plant), number of umbels per the main umbel from 5.62 to 7.18 pieces, seed yield from 1.06 to 1.66 t/ha, the biological yield from 4.29 to 5.70 t ha−1, harvest index from 25.29 to 29.41%, essential oil ratio from 0.29 to 0.33%, and essential oil yield from 3.1 to 5.6 L ha−1. Erbaa variety was observed to be superior over the rest of the varieties producing the maximum values of 6.5 L ha−1 of essential oil, 0.36% essential oil content, 30.9% harvest index, 1.81 t/ha seed yield, and 5.9 t ha−1 biological yield with the treatment of chemical fertilizers.

Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) severely reduces rice grain yield, significantly affects grain quality, and leads to substantial economic loss. In this study, we aimed to characterize the physicochemical properties and processing quality of the Garumi 2 flour rice variety under PHS conditions and compare them with those of the Seolgaeng, Hangaru, Shingil, and Ilpum rice varieties and the Keumkang wheat variety. Analysis of the molecular structure of starch revealed uniform starch granules, increased proportions of short-chain amylopectin in DP 6–12 (51.0–55.3%), and enhanced crystallinity (30.7–35.7%) in rice varieties for flour compared with the Ilpum cooking rice variety. PHS significantly altered the starch structure and gelatinization properties of Garumi 2. It also caused surface pitting and roughness in Garumi 2 starch granules and decreased their crystallinity. Collectively, the findings of this study provide important novel insights into the effects of PHS on the physicochemical properties of Garumi 2 floury rice for flour.

The work shows that application of increased doses of nitrogen does not significantly affect the total milling yield and affects the head rice content. The ambiguous nature of the variability of the grain quality of rice varieties under conditions of different doses of nitrogen fertilizers confirms the need for further studies of the varietal reaction to the level of nitrogen nutrition, based on it - the development of rice cultivation technology modes in order to obtain rice yield with high grain quality.

A 2-year study conducted to determine the effect of integrated nutrient management on yield and quality of basmati rice varieties in non-traditional area with 54 plots in split plot design. Variety HUBR 10-9 produced 18.8% higher mean grain yield and superior quality parameters than HUBR 2-1. Mean milling, head rice recovery, amylose content and alkali digestion value noted higher with HUBR 10-9 by 4.1%, 4.1%, 8.5% and 15.1% over HUBR 2-1, respectively. Addition of 75% recommended dose of fertilizers with 25% recommended dose of nitrogen as farmyard manure produced higher mean values by 3.1%, 4.2% and 4.0% for hulling, milling and head rice recovery respectively over 100% recommended dose applied as inorganic sources. Combined use of bio-inoculants (blue green algae plus Azospirillum) exhibited higher values for yield and quality parameters. HUBR 10-9 be grown using 75% recommended dose of fertilizers with 25% nitrogen as farmyard manure and blue green algae plus Azospirillum for enhancement in yield and quality in non-traditional areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Further investigation required under diverse conditions.

Organic rice production in Indonesia is increasing due to the tendency of consumers who start to consume healthy food and one of them is organic rice. Varieties cultivated by farmers in Lampung Province is mentik susu and sintanur based on high yields and climate suitability. The quality of organic rice can be known through nutritional approach. The purpose of this research is to analyze quality comparison of organic rice of mentik susu and sintanur varieties with nutritional approach. The research methodology used is laboratory research. Data analysis methods used to answer the objective of a proximate test to determine the nutrient content of organic rice in both varieties of mentik susu and sintanur. Nutritional content that is cultivated is carbohydrates, fats, proteins, water, fiber, and ash content. The result of the analysis shows that carbohydrate, protein, and nutrient content of organic rice of mentik susu variety was higher than sintanur varieties. While the fat content, water content, and ash content of organic rice varieties mentik susu is lower than the sintanur varieties. In general it can be concluded that the quality of organic rice varieties mentik susu better than sintanur varieties.

A study was made at Winnipeg in 1938 to determine the effect of leaf rust on the yield and quality of Thatcher and Renown wheat. In one experiment, Thatcher and Renown were sown late in 1/400-acre plots; in another, Thatcher only was used and was sown early in rod-row plots. Half the plots of each variety were kept as free from leaf rust as possible by frequent applications of sulphur dust, but the remaining half became heavily infected. In the 1/400-acre plots, leaf rust reduced the yield of Thatcher and Renown by 51.17 and 29.61%, respectively; in the rod-row plots of Thatcher, it reduced the yield by 37.02%. The decrease in yield was due more to reduction in kernel weight than to reduction in number of kernels per head. All the non-dusted plots ripened approximately three days earlier than the dusted, and the grain from them graded one grade lower than that from the corresponding dusted plots. In both varieties, the protein content was diminished while the carotene content was increased.

AbstractThe yield heterosis of rice is sought by farmers and strong contributes to food safety, but the quality of hybrid rice may be reduced. Therefore, developing new varieties with both high yield and good quality is a heavily researched topic in hybrid rice breeding. However, the molecular mechanism governing yield heterosis and high rice quality has not been elucidated to date. In this study, a comparative transcriptomics and genomic analysis was performed on a hybrid rice variety, Chuanyou6203 (CY6203), and its parents to investigate the molecular mechanism and gene regulation network governing the formation of yield and quality stages. A total of 66,319 SNPs and InDels between CH3203 and C106B were detected in the 5′-UTR, exon, intronic, and 3′-UTR regions according to the reference genome annotation, which involved 7473 genes. A total of 436, 70, 551, 993, and 1216 common DEGs between CY6203 and both of its parents were identified at the same stage in panicles and flag leaves. Of the common DEGs, the numbers of upregulated DEGs between CY6203 and CH3203 were all greater than those of upregulated DEGs between CY6203 and C106B in panicles and flag leaves at the booting, flowering, and middle filling stages. Approximately 40.61% of mRNA editing ratios were between 0.4 and 0.6, and 1.68% of mRNA editing events (editing ratio ≥ 0.8) in CY6203 favored one of its parents at three stages or a particular stage, suggesting that the hypothetical heterosis mechanism of CY6203 might involve dominance or epistasis. Also 15,934 DEGs were classified into 19 distinct modules that were classified into three groups by the weighted gene coexpression network analysis. Through transcriptome analysis of panicles and flag leaves in the yield and quality stages, the DEGs in the green-yellow module primarily contributed to the increase in the source of CY6203 due to an in increase in photosynthetic efficiency and nitrogen utilization efficiency, and a small number of DEGs related to the grain number added spikelet number per panicle amplified its sink. The balanced expression of the major high-quality alleles of C106B and CH3203 in CY6203 contributed to the outstanding quality of CY6203. Our transcriptome and genome analyses offer a new data set that may help to elucidate the molecular mechanism governing the yield heterosis and high quality of a hybrid rice variety.
