This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted to explore the influence of socio-demographic characteristics on academic performance of medical students. The study period was from July 2015 to June 2016. Total 627 final year MBBS students of 11 (6 government and 5 non-government) medical colleges were selected through convenient sampling technique. A self-administered semi structured questionnaire and an interview schedule were used. Study revealed that family income did not have any influence on the academic performance of medical students. Location of parental stay did not show any influence on students' academic performance. Respondents' previous medium of study had little influence on their academic performance. Students who were regular in passing formative assessment also had better performance in professional examinations. Students who failed in professional examinations mostly failed in oral portions (more than 80%). Father's educational qualification did not have any influence on the performance of students but mother's educational qualification had positive relation on it. Performance of those students who were willing to study MBBS were better than unwilling ones. Respondents who were satisfied with the money provided by the parents/guardians were more regular in passing professional examinations. Objective: To estimate the frequency of usage and types of mobile medical applications amongst medical students of Pakistan and its association with their academic performance. Methods: The is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in five medical colleges. It was of 6 months duration from Sept, 2017 to Feb 2018. A sample size of 448 undergraduates was calculated by using WHO sample size calculator. Sampling technique was non-probability convenient sampling. Self-constructed questionnaire was used as data collection tool. Data were entered and analysed in SPSS version 22. Results: The study included 198 male (44.2%) and 250 female (55.8%) students (448 in total). The mean age was 21.08±1.542 years. About 323 (72%) students who were routinely using medical application scored 69+7% in their professional examination while 125 (28%) students, who were not using medical application scored 67±9%. The association between average usage of medical application and academic performance was statistically significant (p<0.01). Amongst the medical applications “Medical Wikipedia” had the most frequent usage i.e. 162 (36.2%) while the least frequently used app was Disease Dictionary i.e. 50 (11.2%). Conclusion: More than half of medical students who participated in the study were using medical applications on daily basis with “Medical Wikipedia” being the most commonly used application. Association between average usage of mobile medical applications and academic performance of the students was statistically significant. A large number of students agreed that medical applications were helpful in improving their medical as well as clinical knowledge. ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the level of medical students’ self-directed learning (SDL) ability in mainland China and to identify its modifiable influencing factors for medical educators to take measures to improve medical professionals’ ability in SDL.DesignThis was a cross-sectional study conducted between January and June 2019.SettingThis study involved students from five medical colleges located in the cities of Shenyang, Binzhou, Xuzhou, Shanghai and Guangzhou of mainland China.ParticipantsParticipants included 365 medical students and residents sampled by the stratified clustered random method from five medical colleges.MethodsThe t-test, F-test and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to test the association between personal and contextual factors of medical students and SDL.ResultsThe mean total SDL score was 76.12 (SD=10.96), implying that Chinese mainland medical students had moderate SDL ability. A univariate analysis found that the personal characteristics of confidence, students’ enjoyment of their specialty, utilisation of library resources, learning goals and habits and academic performance as well as the contextual factors of age, gender, learning resources, family income and group discussion were significantly associated with the total SDL score (p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analyses showed that academic performance, learning goals, confidence, learning resources, utilisation of library resources, family income and age were significantly associated with the total SDL score (p<0.05).ConclusionOur study indicated that the contextual factors of learning resources, family income and age as well as the personal factors of academic performance, learning goals, confidence and utilisation of library resources were associated with medical students’ SDL ability in mainland China. It may be advisable to implement appropriate teaching strategies to improve students’ confidence and assist them establish learning goals, as well as to amplify school learning resources and encourage students to use them fully.

This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 386 students of 3rd phase of selected 2 government and 2 non government medical colleges of Bangladesh in 2013. The objective of the study was to find out the perceptions of the students regarding hidden curriculum in undergraduate medical education. Sampling technique was convenient. A self administered structured questionnaire was used and it consisting of 43 items in relation to hidden curriculum in the likert scale. Perceptions of the respondents were positive about 27 items that is the issues on these item areas were satisfactory in their institutes. Mean scores of these items were more than 3 for each. On the contrary perceptions of the respondents were negative for 16 items that is the issues on these item areas were not satisfactory in their institutes. Mean scores of these items were less than 3 for each. The study result can be used to sensitize and aware the concerned teachers/ authorities for valuing the importance of hidden curriculum and address the issues accordingly.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.4(1) 2013: 20-24

Background/aims Vaginal candidiasis is commonly experienced by women with diabetes, but its prevalence is not well documented in Zimbabwe. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of vaginal candidiasis and factors associated with diabetic treatment adherence in pregnant women with diabetes. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on a consecutive sample of 157 participants from a central hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe. A structured questionnaire and physical examination of the perineum were used to collect data. All procedures were conducted in privacy. Diagnosis of vaginal candidiasis was made clinically. Data were analysed using the Chi-squared test, with P<0.05 being significant. Results The prevalence of vaginal candidiasis was 19.7%. There was a significant association between monthly family income (P=0.041), parity (P=0.029) and number of living children (P=0.049) and the presence of vaginal candidiasis. Women with poor adherence to diabetic therapy were 3.95 times more likely to have vaginal candidiasis (P=0.002). Conclusions Individualised health education on glycaemic control and good perineal hygiene remains key in the prevention of vaginal candidiasis among diabetic pregnant women.

Purpose:  To see the effect of binocular vision problems on childhood academic performance and to record the teacher's perspectives about childhood eye care in Khartoum State of Sudan. Place and Duration of Study:  A descriptive cross-sectional study done among the school going children in the Khartoum State of Sudan during the year 2018. Study Design:  Descriptive cross sectional study. Material and Methods:  Three hundred and forty (340) primary school children’s were recruited for study by convenient sampling technique during the academic year 2018. After relevant history, ocular examination was performed. It included visual acuity measurement, assessment of refractive errors and binocular function tests. Academic performance of the children was recorded from academic records of the children. Finally, the qualitative data was derived from teachers’ perspectives about childhood eye care. Results:  Mean age of the participants was 11.96 ± 1.63 years. The findings revealed that (78.6%) of children achieved poor academic performances with decompensated exophoria at near. 52.7% children with poor academic performances had weak positive fusion reserve at near P = 0.04. 37.2% of the poor performers had convergence insufficiency. Fort eight percent of females with ocular complaints achieved poor academic performances P = 0.034. With regard to teacher's perspectives about childhood eye care, 98.8%believed that the vision problems had effect on the academic record of the children. Seventy percent of the teachers reported that the students did not undergo eye examinations before joining school. Conclusion:  Convergence Insufficiency and weak positive fusional reserve at near has a significant effect on academic performances.

Antenatal care or antenatal care is a planned program that is observation, education and medical treatment for pregnant women, to obtain a safe and satisfying pregnancy and childbirth process. The indicator used to assess the access of pregnant women to antenatal care is K1 direction (first visit) is the contact of pregnant women to health workers and K4 (perspective visit) is 4 or more times contact with health workers. From the data of the Padang City Health Office, it was found that the Air Tawar Puskesmas with this low level was caused by various factors. The purpose of this study was to determine factors related to the use of antenatal services. This type of research is a quantitative study with cross sectional study design with 110 respondents of third trimester pregnant women with purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was performed univariate, bivariate with Chi squre test. From the research results obtained from the five factors studied, it was found that the factors related to the use of antenatal services in freshwater health centers were access or distance with pvalue 0.009 = OR 21.676), service availability factors with a p value of 0.001 = OR 9.293, the role factor midwives with a p value of 0.001 = OR 12.302, while the family income factor, disease complaints obtained results have nothing to do with the use of antenatal services. The author's suggestion is that there is a need for good coordination with the Independent Practice Midwife (BPM), revitalize puskesmas to more strategic places and improve better facilities, improve accessibility that can be minimized, strive to reach pregnant women, especially for accessibility that is less affordable.

Background: Mobile phone addiction is the compulsive use of a mobile phone by youth across the world. A new kind of health disorder in this category among smartphone users is “Whatsapp addiction”. Medical students are also affected by this high smartphone engagement.Methods: It was a cross sectional study, which was conducted among M.B.B.S. students of Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Science, Saifai, Etawah, India. All the M.B.S.S. students willing to participate and present at the time of the study included. The data was collected by using pre designed semi-structured questionnaire. Proforma included socio demographic profile, usage pattern and its impact.Results: This study revealed that most of the participants are males (60.75%). Approximately 54% participants felt that their concentration has been reduced due to Whatsapp use, 43.6% participants experienced strain/diminution of vision and 38.4% participants perceived that their physical activity has been reduced due to Whatsapp use.Conclusions: Whatsapp overuse affects the study duration, concentration, physical activity and sleep.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui beberapa faktor yang berhubungan dengan kejadian bayi Bayi Berat Badan Lahir Rendah (BBLR) di Wilayah Kerja Puskesmas Limboto Kabupaten Gorontalo. Metode yang digunakan adalah  Observasional Analitik dengan pendekatan cross sectional study. Populasi adalah seluruh ibu yang melahirkan berjumlah 853 responden, dengan Sampel yaitu sebanyak 202 responden. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan tekhnik Purposive Sampling. Analisis data menggunakan uji Chi Square. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan proporsi bayi Berat Badan Lahir Rendah (BBLR) 34 responden (16,8%) dan bayi Berat Badan Lahir Normal (BBLN) 168 responden (83,2%). Hasil bivariat didapatkan bahwa ada hubungan pengetahuan (p-value 0,044), pendapatan keluarga (p-value 0,029) dengan kejadian bayi Berat Badan Lahir Rendah (BBLR). Sedangkan, jumlah paritas (p value 0,523),  jarak kehamilan (p-value 0,659), dan Kekurangan Energi Kronik (KEK) (p-value 0,637) tidak memiliki hubungan yang bermakna secara statisti dengan kejadian bayi Berat Badan Lahir Rendah (BBLR).    This study aims to determine several factors associated with the incidence of low birth weight babies (LBW) in the Limboto Health Center, Gorontalo District. The method used is analytic observational with a cross sectional study approach. The population was all mothers who gave birth totaling 853 respondents, with a sample of 202 respondents. The sampling technique used purposive sampling technique. The results showed that the proportion of Low Birth Weight (LBW) babies was 34 respondents (16.8%) and Normal Birth Weight (BBLN) babies were 168 respondents (83.2%). The bivariate results showed that there was a relationship between knowledge (p value 0.044), family income (p value 0.029) with the incidence of low birth weight babies (LBW). Meanwhile, the parity (p value 0.523), pregnancy distance (p-value 0.659), and Chronic Energy Deficiency (P-value 0.637) did not have a statistically significant relationship with the incidence of Low Birth Weight (LBW).

Obesity is defined as an increase in energy intake compared to expenditure, resulting in depletion of body fat and eventually wearing weight. The prevalence of obesity has increased sharply in the Asia Pacific region. Many factors cause obesity. Based on data obtained from the Gorontalo District Health Office in 2018, it shows that the incidence of obesity was 8.795 cases (30.9%) consisting of 1.971 men (6.9%) and 6.824 women (24.0%). Objective: To determine several factors related to the incidence of obesity in adolescents in several high schools in Gorontalo District. This type of research uses observational analytic with a cross sectional study design. The population in this study were all students of class X and XI in SMA Negeri 1 Telaga and SMA Negeri 1 Tibawa, Gorontalo Regency as many as 1.341 students. By using the sampling technique of Proportional Stratified Random Sampling as many as 171 samples. With data analysis techniques using thetest Chi Square. The results of the study of physical activity and consumption of fruits and vegetables had no relationship with the incidence of obesity in adolescents in several high schools in Gorontalo District. Meanwhile, family income has a relationship with the incidence of obesity in adolescents in several high schools in Gorontalo Regency in 2019. It is hoped that each school can increase various activities that can reduce obesity problems and can also provide education in the form of health education to students.

Introduction: Student can be stressed due to different stressors such as academic, financial, health related or loss of close family member or friend, etc. Stress is the bodies’ reaction both neurologically and physiologically to adapt to the new condition. Stress has a negative effect on the academic performance of the students. This study was aimed to explore the stress and stressors and also to determine the association between stress levels and the academic performances in terms of cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of undergraduate medical students. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study conducted among all 234 year-4 medical students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), session 2011-2012. Sample size comprised of 179 students after fulfilling all inclusion and exclusion criteria. A validated Medical Students’ Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ) was used to collect the data. Stress level and its association with CGPA of semester-1 examination were analysed. Results: Response rate was 76.49%, where 72% were female and 69% resided in the hostel. Academic Related and Social-related Stressors caused for severe and high stress in 84% and 49% respondents respectively, with insignificant differences between gender and residency. Respondents with a high and severe stress level were observed to have higher CGPA. Conclusion: UKM medical students are highly resourceful to manage their stress well and thus denying the negative effect of stress towards their academic performance. Medical schools should train students exposing various personal and professional developmental activities that able to face the everyday challenges and manage stress well and thereby achieve better academic performance.
