The n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane soluble fractions of methanol extract of the whole plant of Desmodium motorium were subjected to antioxidant activity by indicated method, inhibition of microbial growth by disc diffusion method and cytotoxicity by brine shrimp lethality bioassay. The methanol i.e., crude extract showed highest antioxidant activity having IC50 9.5 ?g/ml as compared to 9.0 ?g/ml for standard agent BHT. The n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride and dichloromethane soluble fraction showed moderate inhibitory activity to microbial growth, while all the extractive exhibited strong cytotoxic property with the carbon tetrachloride soluble materials revealed the strongest cytotoxicity with LC50 1.54 ?g/ml.© 2013 JSR Publications. In this study, three compounds, stigmasterol (1), lupeol (2), 16-hydroxylupeol (3) were isolated from the petroleum ether soluble fraction of a methanol extract of whole plant of Justica gendarussa (Burm. f). The crude methanol extract as well as its petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform soluble Kupchan fractions were studied for antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Among the different fractions tested for antioxidant activity, the chloroform soluble partitionate was the most potent with IC50 value of 18.80 μg/ml as compared to tertbutyl- 1-hydroxytoluene (IC50=17.69 μg/ml). Antimicrobial screening of the different extractives was conducted by the disc diffusion method and all the fractions except chloroform soluble partitionate exhibited mild antimicrobial activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 7-10 mm. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the petroleum ether soluble materials demonstrated the highest toxicity with LC50 of 1.27μg /ml. This is the first report of isolation of compounds from J. gendarussa, and its antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. Cryptocoryne ciliata belonging to the Araceae family has been investigated for isolation of its secondary metabolites and evaluation of biological activities of the crude extractives with special emphasis to the antioxidant activity and brine shrimp lethality bioassay. The whole plant was extracted with methanol and concentrated extract was partitioned using petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride and ethyl acetate. Aqueous soluble fraction of the methanolic extract showed the highest antioxidant activity. The carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction of the methanolic extract and the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the methanolic extract showed moderate antioxidant activity as compared to free antioxidant activity of tert-butyl-1-hydroxytolunene. In the brine shrimp lethality bioassay, among all extracts of whole plant of C. ciliata, the carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction of the methanolic extract showed strong cytotoxic activity. Aqueous soluble fraction of the methanolic extract, methanolic crude and ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the methanolic extract showed mild cytotoxity as compared to that of vincristine sulphate. Scopoletin (1) was isolated from the chloroform soluble fraction of a methanol extract of the stem bark of Phyllanthus reticulates (Family: Euphorbiaceae). The petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride and choloroform soluble fractions of this methanol extract were subjected to antimicrobial screening and brine shrimp lethality bioassay. All of the partitionates showed moderate to strong inhibitory activity to microbial growth while the chloroform soluble fraction showed strongest cytotoxicity having LC50 1.99 ?g/ml. Fungal food spoilage plays a key role in the deterioration of food products, and finding a suitable natural preservative can solve this problem. Therefore, antifungal activity of green mandarin (Citrus reticulata) essential oil (GMEO) in the vapor phase against the growth of Penicillium (P.) expansum and P. chrysogenum inoculated on wheat bread (in situ experiment) was investigated in the current research. The volatile compounds of the GMEO were analyzed by a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC–MS), and its antioxidant activity was determined by testing free radical-scavenging capacity (DPPH assay). Moreover, the disc diffusion method was used to analyze the antifungal activity of GMEO in in vitro conditions. The results demonstrate that the Citrus reticulata EO consisted of α-limonene as the most abundant component (71.5%), followed by γ-terpinene (13.9%), and β-pinene (3.5%), and it displayed the weak antioxidant activity with the value of inhibition 5.6 ±0.7%, which corresponds to 103.0 ±6.4 µg TEAC.mL-1. The findings from the GMEO antifungal activity determination revealed that values for the inhibition zone with disc diffusion method ranged from 0.00 ±0.00 (no antifungal effectiveness) to 5.67 ±0.58 mm (moderate antifungal activity). Finally, exposure of Penicillium strains growing on bread to GMEO in vapor phase led to the finding that 250 μL.L-1 of GMEO exhibited the lowest value for mycelial growth inhibition (MGI) of P. expansum (-51.37 ±3.01%) whose negative value reflects even supportive effect of the EO on the microscopic fungus growth. On the other hand, GMEO at this concentration (250 μL.L-1) resulted in the strongest inhibitory action (MGI: 54.15 ±1.15%) against growth of P. chrysogenum. Based on the findings it can be concluded that GMEO in the vapor phase is not an effective antifungal agent against the growth of P. expansum inoculated on bread; however, its antifungal potential manifested against P. chrysogenum suggests GMEO to be an appropriate alternative to the use of chemical inhibitors for bread preservation.

<p> </p><p>Red dragon fruit (<em>H. Polyrhizus</em>) is one of the the plants that has a great potential as natural antioxidant. This study tested the activity of radical scavenging of 2-2' diphenyl -1- pikril hidrazil (DPPH) in the methanol extract, as well as in the soluble and insoluble fractions of ethyl acetate of red dragon fruit peel. This research is carried out through various stages, such as: extraction and fractionation to obtain both insoluble fraction and soluble fractions of ethyl acetate. Antioxidant activity test is conducted by the method of thin layer chromatography and spectrophotometry.<strong> </strong>Antioxidant activity test, IC<sub>50 </sub>values of methanol extract, ethyl acetate soluble fraction, and insoluble fraction of ethyl acetate had been obtained consecutively as much as 241.19 µg /mL, 8.34  µg/mL, 46.84 µg/mL. The soluble fraction of ethyl acetate had greater antioxidant activity compared to the methanol extract and the insoluble fractions of ethyl acetate.</p>

Scytonema schmidtii,a cyanobacterium was isolated from the collected soil samples from different locations of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra state (India). Identification was carried out using morphological variation and taxonomical approaches according to Desikachary (1959) and Prescott (1962) .The axenic culture of Scytonema schmidtii was obtained by using the method recommended by Bolch and Blackburn (1996). The isolated Scytonema schmidtii was grown autotropically in BG-11 medium as described by Rippka et al.,(1979) and incubated at 30±2°c.After 25 days, biomass was harvested by filtration through double layered muslin cloth and dried using air blower. The biomass of this Scytonema schmidtii species was used for the assessment of antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Micrococcus flavus and Proteus mirabilis. The antibacterial activity was studied by disc diffusion method (Anonymous,1996).Methanol extract of Scytonema schmidtii showed the activity against all the tested bacterial strains.Maximum zone of inhibition (23±1.9 mm) was recorded with methanol extract of Scytonema schmidtii.

The methanol extract of leaves and stems of Glycosmis arborea and their pet-ether, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and aqueous soluble partitionates were subjected to assays for antioxidant activity by Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, membrane stabilizing and thrombolytic activities. The carbon tetrachloride soluble fraction of stems of G. arborea demonstrated the presence of significant amount of phenolic compounds (36.95 ± 0.54 mg of GAE/g of extract). The extractives inhibited heat as well as hypotonic solution-induced haemolysis of rat erythrocytes in vitro. The pet-ether soluble fraction of leaves and stems of G. arborea showed 20.46 and 38.24% and 22.50 and 48.25%. inhibition of hemolysis of RBC caused by heat and hypotonic solution, as compared to 30.55 and 72.91% inhibition of hemolysis of RBC caused by the standard Acetyl salicylic acid at 0.01 mg/ml concentration, respectively. Among the four fractions, the chloroform soluble materials of the stems of G. arborea revealed highest thrombolytic activity with clot lysis value of 36.50% while standard streptokinase and water used as positive and negative controls, showed 64.25±0.26 and 2.35±0.35 % lysis of clot respectively DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bpj.v15i2.12579 Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 15(2): 141-143, 2012

The methanol extracts of whole plant of Cissus adnata (Roxb.) and their organic and aqueous soluble partitioning materials were evaluated for antioxidant, cytotoxic and membrane stabilizing properties. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, the aqueous extract of whole plant of C. adnata displayed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 4.17 ?g/ml, while the pet ether soluble fraction showed significant lethality to brine shrimps having LC50 value of 1.02 ?g/ml, as compared to the standard vincristine sulphate (LC50 value of 0.44 ?g/ml). In the evaluation for membrane stabilizing property, the pet ether soluble fraction of methanol extract of the whole plant inhibited 67.43 % and 56.60 % hypotonic solution- and heat-induced haemolysis of RBCs, respectively.Dhaka Univ. 9´-Desmethylgaruganin I has been isolated from the dichloromethane extract of the stem bark of Garuga pinnata Roxb. The crude extract was screened for antimicrobial activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi by disc diffusion method and cytotoxicity by brine shrimp lethality bioassay. The work described in this paper details the biological investigation on Bombax ceiba, species of Malvaceae. The methanol crude extract of Bombax ceiba was fractionated with kupchan method and n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform fraction were made for  screening the antimicrobial and antitumor potentials using disc diffusion method and brine shrimp lethality bioassay respectively. An established antibiotic (kanamycin, 30µg/disc) and cytotoxic agent (vincristine sulphate) were used to compare the results. From the graphs the concentration of methanolic crude extract give LC50 (50% mortality) value of 3.90mg/ml. LC90 was also determined from the graph to establish the therapeutic index and the value was found 150.0mg/ml. The four fractions were assayed for antimicrobial screening and the carbon tetrachloride fraction showed most prominent zone of inhibition against a number of bacterial and fungal strains.Keywords: Bombax ceiba; Brine shrimp lethality bioassay; Disc diffusion method.© 2011 JSR Publications.
