Academic Gymnasium was found in October 1784 at the University of Lviv. This is a state secondary educational institution of the humanitarian direction. The graduates-maturists had the opportunity to continue their studies at the university after its completion. The Academic Gymnasium was the oldest gymnasium with the Ukrainian language of instruction. The information concerning the gymnasium's organization's functioning and principles till 1848 was lost due to revolutionary events. We can find the data about the organization of the institution's functioning, the number of teachers and students, and their social origin from 1849. At the same time, this date coincides with the secondary school's reform in 1849 based on the «Organizational Essay of High Schools and Actual Schools of Austria» and the «Normative Plan of Education for Gymnasia», which functioned until 1910 with minor changes. Exactly these normative documents regulated the functioning of the gymnasium - the organization of the educational process, the language of teaching, the priority of disciplines, the number and load of teachers, the organization of extra-curricular activities of high school students. Since 1907, the gymnasium is reorganized into the Main Gymnasium due to the number of students' growth and moving into a newly built building on L. Sapieha street and the Branch in the premises of the Narodnyi dim (People's Hall). The educational process in the gymnasium was carried out based on ministerial plans. By the end of the 20th century, more than 60% of the educational time was spent on learning languages, and the natural and mathematical cycle reached 25%, which indicates the humanitarian direction of gymnasium preparation. The situation was changed by the curriculum for classical gymnasiums in 1909, according to which the disciplines of the natural-mathematical cycle were synchronized with the requirements of universities. The article's main thesis is that during the 1849-1914 years, the Tsissar-Royal Academic Gymnasium in Lviv developed into a leading secondary educational institution. Mostly Ukrainian Greek Catholics, natives from Halychyna, studied here. The headmasters of the gymnasium were experienced teachers, skilled administrators. During the second half of the 19th century - at the beginning of the 20th century, the gymnasium was headed by Franz Brugger (1848-1858), Ivan Piontkovskyi (1858-1868), Vasyl Ilnytskyi (1868-1892 ), Edvard Kharkevych (1892-1911) and Illia Kokorudz (1911-1927). The teaching staff was increasing quantitatively and qualitatively. Careful selection, education requirements, and teaching methods provided the gymnasium with qualified specialists and responsible officials. The institution's educational process was provided by about 23-25 teachers, 70% of whom were gymnasium professors. Teachers of gymnasium conducted classes on a high professional level with students and created original textbooks in their native language, literature, history, and geography. Many teachers of the gymnasium and later graduates became well-known socio-political figures, scientists, and artists. So, Academic Gymnasium in Lviv is a secondary educational institution of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It functioned following Austrian secondary school legislation. The Academic Gymnasium, being in the structure of the Lviv University, provided it with well-prepared entrants. Students received a profound knowledge of normative disciplines in the gymnasium and a good national and religious education. The heads of the educational institution were experienced teachers and organizers who took care of the proper provision of the educational institution with teaching staff. The educational and methodological literature was supported, developed, and implemented in the educational process, together with teachers and public figures. Teachers of the gymnasium constantly worked on self-education and were active socio-political leaders. Keywords: Academic Gymnasium, organization, Krajova Szkolna Rada (Region School Council), teachers, teaching process, students, educational legislation.

The article deals with literary and artistic life at the Kremenets Ukrainian Gymnasium named after Ivan Steshenko. On the basis of archival materials the teaching staff of the educational institution, which functioned in the territory of the Second Rzeczpospolita, was studied. The author notes that the main component of state formation in the years of the Ukrainian People's Republic was the formation and development of Ukrainian national education and culture. The first step in implementing the national school reform was the creation of conditions for the introduction of the Ukrainian language in high school and the opening of new Ukrainian gymnasia. Numerous documents stored in the State Archives of the Ternopil region (351, «Private Ukrainian Gymnasium of Joint Training in Kremenets»), reveal the activity of the educational institution and confirm its prominent role in the educational life of the Ukrainian population of Kremenets. The researcher emphasizes the pedagogical skills of the teaching staff of the Kremenets Ukrainian Gymnasium, and the understanding of the important role of education in the process of preserving national dignity and spirituality contributed to the formation of students' professional and intellectual development. In its activity, the Ukrainian gymnasium has repeatedly faced difficulties: lack of funding, lack of premises adapted properly to educational needs, lack of appropriate material and technical base, but it became the center of high culture and education. The content of the first issue of the handwritten literary and artistic magazine "Youth" was analyzed, on the basis of the memoirs of the student of the gymnasium and the editor of the almanac U. Samchuk, the names of the members of the literary circle were established. The main aspects of the cultural-artistic collaboration of the teaching staff and the students' collectives of the gymnasium with Prosvita Society are revealed. The musical activity of high school students was traced and the programs of concert performances were explored. Based on the memories of former students of the gymnasium, the repertoire of the theater circle under the direction of G. Berezovsky was considered, and the study of high school students at the School of National Dances V. Avramenko was analyzed. The names of well-known writers and public figures who studied in the Ukrainian gymnasium were established.

Introduction. In modern Russian society, the requirements for the general level of the school educational process have resulted not only from the demands related to the content of educational programmes, but also from sufficiently high requirements for a teacher personality. A modern teacher has to build up a holistic and harmonious image, ranging from stylish and modern appearance to a high level of professionalism. The image of a teacher directly or indirectly influences the effectiveness of the mutual action of the members of education. Therefore, the reflection of various aspects, which form the image of the teacher in order to correct it in accordance with the existing school realities, is a relevant direction of psychological research. The aim of the present research is to identify the most significant and preferred characteristics of the image of a modern teacher in the perceptions of high school students.Methodology and research methods. The methodological framework of the research is based on psychosemiotic approaches in social psychology: the concept of modern psychosemiotics of communication by E. A. Petrova and theoretical positions of objective and subjective psychosemantics by E. Yu. Artemyeva, V. F. Petrenko and A. G. Shmelev. The selection of psychodiagnostic methods was based on three-factor models of imageological space organisation. The perceptions of high school students about such characteristics of the image as the appearance of the “ideal” and “bad” teacher were studied using a projective technique. The method of free semantic survey, supplemented by the method of “Factor Space of the Teacher Image” by E. A. Petrova, was used to study personal, professional and communicative features. Such method allowed the authors to structure the students’ ideas about the image of the teacher by categories related to personal characteristics: attitude to own profession, attitude to students and educational activities. The images of teachers of different types were created through the psychosemantic technique developed by D. Peabody in A. G. Shmelev’s adaptation. The non-parametric criterion of differences – Mann-Whitney U-test was employed to identify the differences in high school students’ ideas about the image of the modern “ideal” teacher depending on gender. Results and scientific novelty. It was established that the attitude of high school students to the teacher mostly depends on teacher’s professional and personal qualities. School students especially highlighted the following aspects: the high level of mastery over the subject taught; teachers’ ability to interest students in educational material; cooperation with students and objective assessment of their knowledge. Significant positive personality characteristics included the ability to interact constructively and kindly with each student, as well as the high level of activity and positive energy of the teacher. The students think that a teacher’s appearance does not play a determining role. However, the respondents noted that it is important for them that the teacher prefers the business style of clothing and looks modern and neat.Practical significance. The research results can be applied in the practice of school psychological service and in coaching activities in order to inform the teaching staff and interested teachers about the role of image when building effective interactions in the system “teacher-student”.

In the modern conditions of market economy development, the world of professions depends on technological and cultural globalization, hyper competition, widespread use of the latest state-of-the-art technologies and considerable growth of the realm of intellectual labour. The gap between educated and non-educated people is also growing fast, the popularity of professions essential for society is diminishing, and some have already disappeared. The determining factors for successful personal professional realization become increasingly complex. This trend is more visible and contradictory in the local social and economic spaces. The real situation of the regional labour market does not guarantee a permanent job, and severely limits the opportunity for jobs that match individual qualifications. These conditions threaten to narrow the range of options regarding the choice of a university and an academic concentration, and orientates people towards survival strategies (supporting realization in the home town and domination of social models of behavior). In this sense there is an actual need of a complex examination of all the factors and conditions influencing the life choices of university applicants, of the dynamics of their planning strategies and self-determination (as an orientation towards a university or profession), which is considered essential for the development of efficient university policies with a view to attracting students and modernizing the educational process. For a long period of time career orientation problems have been seen as consequences of career consulting and social and psychological diagnostics, underestimating the subjectivity factor in prospective students. All the abovementioned aspects urge us to examine the life strategies of high school students related to their choice of university education as part of their career development within the context of significant social and economic changes. The research discussed herein focuses on the motivation attitudes of students to continue their study at South- West University. A survey has been conducted to reveal the content of the three basic reactions that come with the attitudes – 1. Cognitive reactions or beliefs, reflecting their knowledge of the university and the personal perceptions of it; 2. Affective reactions connected to the evaluation of the university, its social and economic environment, the emotional attitude of students. 3. Conative reactions revealing students’ intentions to continue their education, to make decisions, or highlighting certain tendencies in their development of a personal attitude towards the university. The results of the survey show that the motivation attitudes depend on the public prestige of the university, the parents’ opinion (especially those who have graduated from the same university and have a successful career), the range of academic majors on offer, and the social and economic standards.

The purpose of this work is to highlight some aspects of the development of the Katerynoslav Theological Seminary in the context of its achievements and problems in the early 20th century. Research methods: descriptive and retrospective. Their use made it possible to recreate the vast majority of historical plots relaing to the activities of the Katerynoslav Theological Seminary during the specified period. Main results. The historical conditions and features of the activity of the Katerynoslav Seminary at the beginning of the 20th century are analyzed. The role of diocesan bishops and rectors in the development of the educational institution is investigated. It is noted that the seminary achieved significant achievements thanks to the efforts of the first rector, later Katerynoslav Archbishop Agapit (Vishnevsky), in the 20th century. The set of documents used in the work makes it possible to reconstruct the position of the seminary during 1906–1914, during the rectorship of Archpriest Andrei (Odintsov). It is stated that the educational process in the theological seminary at that time was under the control of Katerynoslav Bishop Simeon (Pokrovsky). The main achievements and problems that arose during this period are analyzed. The leadership of the seminary failed to protect the institution from the penetration of revolutionary sentiments that arose in society. The author shows the formation of free thought among students, which led to their violation of discipline and the charter of the seminary. In 1910 the activities of a secret group of 16 seminarians were revealed. Their purpose was to create a general seminary union and spread national revolutionary ideas. Punishments of violators of discipline and the fight against manifestations of free-thinking did not save the educational institution from further historical realities. It is established that during the rectorship of Joseph Krechetovich (1915–1918) the Seminary had all the opportunities for its further development. Confirmation is the growth in the number of students by 1917 and the high level of its financial support. Thus, the Katerynoslav Theological Seminary for 18 years of its activity in the 20th century passed an active phase from the rise of its development to the closure of the educational institution. The active position of Katerynoslav hierarchs, rectors and teachers contributed to the scientific and educational development of the seminary, which rightly occupied an important place among other theological educational institutions in Ukraine. However, the historical events taking place in this period could not but affect the life of the teaching staff and seminarians. The closure of the seminary was the result of revolutionary transformations in the country. Practical significance. The main provisions of the article can become the basis for further scientific research. They are recommended for those who are interested in this problem. Originality is due to an unbiased approach when considering the used scientific works of researchers and archival sources. Scientific novelty. For the first time, a comprehensive study of the peculiarities of the development of the Katerynoslav Theological Seminary through the prism of the activities of its rectors in the context of historical events of the early 20th century is proposed. Type of article: theoretical.
