Inspired by nature, humankind has been able to attain significant achievements in the drug and food industries. Particularly, medicinal plants are a rich source of medicinal, cosmetic, sanitary, and aromatic substances. Genus Ferula from the Apiaceae family is a plant genus that possesses over 170 species, which have been carefully documented with regard to their medicinal properties. Ferula spp. affects many body organs, and their respective functions, in humans, such as the immune system, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous system, bone (skeleton), and teeth. In spite of the benefits, ferulosis (Ferula toxicity) is an important aspect of Ferula consumption in humans and animals. Hemorrhagic problems and infertility are important signs of ferulosis. In this review, we have described all of the effects of the active ingredients of Ferula spp. and their mechanisms of actions, when known, based on an extensive literature review. Thus, our review opens a window of the benefits of Ferula as a phyto-pharmaceutical and its therapeutic applications in pharmacy, dentistry, and medicine.

Tualang, Gelam and Kelulut honeys are tropical rainforest honeys reported to have various medicinal properties. Studies related to the medicinal properties and physicochemical characteristics of these honeys are growing extensively and receiving increased attention. This review incorporated and analysed the findings on the biological and physicochemical properties of these honeys. Tualang, Gelam and Kelulut honeys were found to possess a wide variety of biological effects attributed to their physicochemical characteristics. Findings revealed that these honeys have anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-cancer, anti-oxidative, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties and effects on the cardiovascular system, nervous system and reproductive system. The physicochemical properties of these honeys were compared and discussed and results showed that they have high-quality contents and excellent antioxidant sources.

Aerva plants are known widely for their exceptional medicinal uses. They have been employed conventionally for their medicinal properties by the common folk in several regions of the world. This indicates the efficacy of these remarkable herbs. They are also known for their multiple biological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antilithiatic, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, anticancer, antihyperlipidemic and nephroprotective potential. These pharmacological actions are associated with the presence of valuable nutrients and biochemical compounds such as sterols/terpenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolics and sugars. The proper utilization of the substances obtained from these plants can enhance the finesse of the capabilities of these plants. These plants are not only medicinally important but are significantly serving several other scientific purposes. In the prospect of medicinal, scientific uses and the bioavailability of precious chemicals of Aerva species, a comprehensive review is compiled, which focuses on the detailed profile of biochemical compounds, pharmacological functions and biological activities of Aerva plants. The review also discusses the synthetic importance and the toxicity of these plants. The study aims to compile comprehensively what is already done and what more is needed to be done in the future investigations related to Aerva species.

Psoralea corylifolia (Leguminosae) commonly known as babchi or babachi has been used in different traditional system of various aliments since, ancient time. Psoralea corylifolia grow throughout Asia and India or many other countries. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review on the phytochemical and pharmacological aspect of Psoralea corylifolia. In traditional medicine, it has been used in treatment of various diseases such as leucoderma skin diseases, cardiovascular diseases, nephritis, osteoporosis, and cancer vitiligo, poisoning, for conception, caries, deafness, filarial. The stem, seeds, leaves, of this plant containe a variety of biologically active compound such as flavonoids, coumarins, phenols, benzofurans, benzopyrans, quinines, sesquiterpenoids, triterpenoids, steroids, and some other components. Those have varuous medicinal properties. The different part of the plant showed the antimicrobial, antipregnancy, estrogenic, antitumor, antioxidant, and many other pharmacological activities. In the present era, researchers are focusing on medicinal plant research throughout the world as medicinal plants are an important and cheap source of drugs and have a long history. Most of the remedies in the traditional system were taken from plants due to lack of technology, and using plants as medicines were proven to be useful. Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) is an aromatic plant as well as a rich source of medicinal compounds. From decades the plant is used to treat many diseases i.e., malaria, fever, cold and cough etc. Several essential phytochemicals have been isolated from L.camara L., including triterpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, steroids, and tannins. Moreover, it is also known as an essential oil-producing plant, and the essential oil is available in the market known as Lantana oils. Thus due to the above mentioned economic as well as medicinal properties of L.camara L; there is a need of a comprehensive report on the ethnobotanical, phytochemical, pharmacological and toxicological aspects of L. camara L. This review will be useful for researchers working in the field of genomics, metabolomics and molecular studies of medicinal plants.

Zanthoxylum species (Syn. Fagara species) of the Rutaceae family are widely used in many countries as food and in trado-medicinal practice due to their wide geographical distribution and medicinal properties. Peer reviewed journal articles and ethnobotanical records that reported the traditional knowledge, phytoconstituents, biological activities and toxicological profiles of Z. species with a focus on metabolic and neuronal health were reviewed. It was observed that many of the plant species are used as food ingredients and in treating inflammation, pain, hypertension and brain diseases. Over 500 compounds have been isolated from Z. species, and the biological activities of both the plant extracts and their phytoconstituents, including their mechanisms of action, are discussed. The phytochemicals responsible for the biological activities of some of the species are yet to be identified. Similarly, biological activities of some isolated compounds remain unknown. Taken together, the Z. species extracts and compounds possess promising biological activities and should be further explored as potential sources of new nutraceuticals and drugs.
