This paper presents a novel theory regarding the blade loading and the passage flow field within general turbomachineries. The basic philosophy is to establish an analytical relation between the loading, the flow angle, and the blade geometry based on the conservation of energy. Detailed validations and analyses will be carried out to provide a general scope regarding the theory itself as well as its advantages and limitations in common applications. The paper includes the theoretical derivation of the target relation. The starting point is the standard RANS equations. From that, with the aid of the passage-average operator, the relation between the loading and the passage flow field is derived under the energy balance. Theoretical analyses regarding the validity of the relation are performed based on the simulation results and test data on different cascades. Discussions are conducted regarding the assumption and potential applications of the theory. Conclusions are drawn on the applicability of the theory to introduce its potential applications in general turbomachineries.

A theoretical study is performed about the hydrodynamic interaction of fine species entrapped in the boundary layer (BL) at solid wall (plate). The key starting point is the analysis of the disturbance introduced by solid spheres in the background fluid flow. For a neutrally buoyant entity, the type of interaction is determined by the size of the spheres as compared to the thickness of the BL region. The result is granulometric separation of the solids inside the BL domain at the wall. The most important result in view of potential applications concerns the so-called small particles Rp < L/ReL5/4 (ReL is the Reynolds number of the background flow and Rp is the radius of the entrapped sphere). In the case of non-neutrally buoyant particles, gravity interferes with the separation effect. Important factor in this case is the relative density of the solid species as compared to this of the fluid. In view of further practical uses, particles within the range of Δρ/ρ < Fr2/ReL1/2 (Fr is Froude number and Δρ/ρ is the relative density of the entrapped solids) are systematically studied. The trajectories inside the BL region of the captured species are calculated. The obtained data show that there are preferred regions along the wall where the fine solids are detained. The results are important for the assessment of the general efficiency of entrapment and segregation of fine species in the vicinity of solid walls and have high potential for further design of industrial separation processes.

Abstract The clearance that exists between the casing and turbine blade tips is one of the key drivers of efficiency in gas turbine engines. For this reason, engine manufacturers utilize precise manufacturing techniques and may employ clearance control systems to minimize tip clearances to reduce associated losses. Despite these efforts, turbines typically exhibit some nominal casing ovality or rotor-casing eccentricity, and changes to blade tip clearance during operation commonly occur due to thermal and mechanical stresses. The present study investigates non-axisymmetric tip clearance effects by creating a rotor-casing eccentricity in a one-stage axial test turbine operating in a continuous-duration mode at engine relevant conditions with engine representative hardware. A magnetic levitation bearing system was leveraged to move the turbine shaft to vary the rotor-casing eccentricity without test section disassembly. The results of this study indicate that rotor-casing eccentricity does not affect overall turbine efficiency over the range that was tested, but does locally influence efficiency and the rotor exit flow field. Comparisons of flow angle and secondary flow kinetic energy agreed with previous studies and existing analytical methods, respectively. Collectively, these results indicate that tip clearance can be studied locally on an eccentric rotor.

Two basic functions of the machine, consumer and technical are given. Application the law of conservation of energy is shown in case of the description of an energy balance of an element of the machine. The expanded concept of technical condition in relation to the machine is this, parameters of technical condition are justified. Communications of technical condition with operability and working capacity and also communication of operability of an element of the machine with its efficiency are defined. The possibility of representation of technical condition in the form of сlass in object-oriented programming is revealed.

Abstract Entanglement has attracted great attention in the past few decades due to its potential applications in the field of quantum information protocols. From now, achieving excellent phase locking in entanglement generation is significant yet a challenging task in cryogenic quantum technology. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a comprehensive paradigm of phase locking protocol for quadrature entanglement at the microwave wavelengths. We carry out a theoretical derivation of the quadrature entangled microwaves generated based on Josephson Parametric Amplifiers (JPAs), and the phase locking error signal, which is used to lock the relative phase of zero between the two quadrature squeezed microwaves. Simulating data for the phase locking scheme are shown under different parameter settings for comparison. Finally, we use the proposed phase locking scheme to enable a stable output of quadrature entangled microwave.

In order to study the effect of different numbers of impeller blades on the performance of mixed-flow pump “saddle zone”, the external characteristic test and numerical simulation of mixed-flow pumps with three different impeller blade numbers were carried out. Based on high-precision numerical prediction, the internal flow field and tip leakage flow field of mixed flow pump under design conditions and stall conditions are investigated. By studying the vorticity transport in the stall flow field, the specific location of the high loss area inside the mixed flow pump impeller with different numbers of blades is located. The research results show that the increase in the number of impeller blades improve the pump head and efficiency under design conditions. Compared to the 4-blade impeller, the head and efficiency of the 5-blade impeller are increased by 5.4% and 21.9% respectively. However, the increase in the number of blades also leads to the widening of the “saddle area” of the mixed-flow pump, which leads to the early occurrence of stall and increases the instability of the mixed-flow pump. As the mixed-flow pump enters the stall condition, the inlet of the mixed-flow pump has a spiral swirl structure near the end wall for different blade numbers, but the depth and range of the swirling flow are different due to the change in the number of blades. At the same time, the change in the number of blades also makes the flow angle at 75% span change significantly, but the flow angle at 95% span is not much different because the tip leakage flow recirculates at the leading edge. Through the analysis of the vorticity transport results in the impeller with different numbers of blades, it is found that the reasons for the increase in the values of the vorticity transport in the stall condition are mainly impacted by the swirl flow at the impeller inlet, the tip leakage flow at the leading edge and the increased unsteady flow structures.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is currently used in the environmental field to simulate flow and dispersion of pollutants around buildings. However, the closure assumptions of the turbulence usually employed in CFD codes are not always physically based and adequate for all the flow regimes relating to practical applications. The starting point of this work is the performance assessment of the V2F (i.e., v2¯ − f) model implemented in Ansys Fluent for simulating the flow field in an idealized array of two-dimensional canyons. The V2F model has been used in the past to predict low-speed and wall-bounded flows, but it has never been used to simulate airflows in urban street canyons. The numerical results are validated against experimental data collected in the water channel and compared with other turbulence models incorporated in Ansys Fluent (i.e., variations of both k-ε and k-ω models and the Reynolds stress model). The results show that the V2F model provides the best prediction of the flow field for two flow regimes commonly found in urban canopies. The V2F model is also employed to quantify the air-exchange rate (ACH) for a series of two-dimensional building arrangements, such as step-up and step-down configurations, having different aspect ratios and relative heights of the buildings. The results show a clear dependence of the ACH on the latter two parameters and highlight the role played by the turbulence in the exchange of air mass, particularly important for the step-down configurations, when the ventilation associated with the mean flow is generally poor.

A cascade design-method is presented which complements the meridional through-flow design procedure of turbomachines. Starting from an axisymmetric flow field and the streamline geometry in the meridional plane this simple method produces a solution for the quasi three-dimensional flow field and the blade-element geometry on corresponding stream surfaces. In addition, it provides intra-blade data on loss and turning required for a consistent design and a convenient means of optimizing blade loading. The purpose of this paper is to describe the theoretical basis of the method and to illustrate its application in the design of transonic compressors.

A transonic centrifugal compressor impeller is generally composed of the main and the splitter blades which are different in chord length. As a result, the tip leakage flows from the main and the splitter blades interact with each other and then complicate the flow field in the compressor. In this study, in order to clarify the individual influences of these leakage flows on the flow field in the transonic centrifugal compressor stage at near-choke to near-stall condition, the flows in the compressor at four conditions prescribed by the presence and the absence of the tip clearances were analyzed numerically. The computed results clarified the following noticeable phenomena. The tip clearance of the main blade induces the tip leakage vortex from the leading edge of the main blade. This vortex decreases the blade loading of the main blade to the negative value by the increase of the flow acceleration along the suction surface of the splitter blade, and consequently induces the tip leakage vortex caused by the negative blade loading of the main blade at any operating points. These phenomena decline the impeller efficiency. On the other hand, the tip clearance of the splitter blade decreases the afore mentioned acceleration by the formation of the tip leakage vortex from the leading edge of the splitter blade and the decrease of the incidence angle for the splitter blade caused by the suction of the flow into the tip clearance. These phenomena reduce the loss generated by the negative blade loading of the main blade and consequently reduce the decline of the impeller efficiency. Moreover, the tip clearances enlarge the flow separation around the diffuser inlet and then decline the diffuser performance independently of the operating points.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flow field in a high-pressure transonic turbine with a downstream vane row (1.5 stage machine) concerning the airfoil indexing. The objective is a detailed analysis of the three-dimensional aerodynamics of the second vane for different clocking positions. To give an overview of the time-averaged flow field, five-hole probe measurements were performed upstream and downstream of the second stator. Furthermore in these planes additional unsteady measurements were carried out with laser Doppler velocimetry in order to record rotor phase-resolved velocity, flow angle, and turbulence distributions at two different clocking positions. In the planes upstream of the second vane, the time-resolved pressure field has been measured by means of a fast response aerodynamic pressure probe. This paper shows that the secondary flows of the second vane are significantly modified by the different clocking positions, in connection with the first vane modulation of the rotor secondary flows. An analysis of the performance of the second vane is also carried out, and a 0.6% variation in the second vane loss coefficient has been recorded among the different clocking positions.

The present paper deals with the numerical and experimental investigation of the effect of return channel (RCH) dimensions of a centrifugal compressor stage on the aerodynamic performance. Three different return channel stages were investigated, two stages comprising three-dimensional (3D) return channel blades and one stage comprising two-dimensional (2D) RCH vanes. The analysis was performed regarding both the investigation of overall performance (stage efficiency, RCH total pressure loss coefficient) and detailed flow-field performance. For detailed experimental flow-field investigation at the stage exit, six circumferentially traversed three-hole probes were positioned downstream the return channel exit in order to get two-dimensional flow-field information. Additionally, static pressure wall measurements were taken at the hub and shroud pressure and suction side (SS) of the 2D and 3D return channel blades. The return channel system overall performance was calculated by measurements of the circumferentially averaged 1D flow field downstream the diffuser exit and downstream the stage exit. Dependent on the type of return channel blade, the numerical and experimental results show a significant effect on the flow field overall and detail performance. In general, satisfactory agreement between computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-prediction and test-rig measurements was achieved regarding overall and flow-field performance. In comparison with the measurements, the CFD-calculated stage performance (efficiency and pressure rise coefficient) of all the 3D-RCH stages was slightly overpredicted. Very good agreement between CFD and measurement results was found for the static pressure distribution on the RCH wall surfaces while small CFD-deviations occur in the measured flow angle at the stage exit, dependent on the turbulence model selected.
