Salvia plants belong to the Lamiaceae family and are recognized as being strongly aromatic, being widely used for different purposes in culinary or traditional medicine. These plants are well recognized as being rich in phenolic acids, flavonoids and terpenic compounds, which exhibit health-beneficial activities, protecting against oxidative and inflammatory-related diseases, such as diabetes and obesity. Because of these properties, phytochemicals from Salvia species have been investigated as health promoting agents, for application in distinct fields. However, the growing demand for natural products with possible uses and applications in industry requires scientific validation studies. This review consists of a compilation of relevant studies with an emphasis on the antioxidant, antidiabetic and anti-obesity properties of phenolic-rich extracts from Salvia plants.

Background:Stenoloma chusanum (L.) Ching is a Chinese traditional medicinal fern with high total flavonoid and total phenolic content. Traditionally, phenolic compounds were separated by using column chromatography, which is relatively inefficient. </P><P> Objective: This study aims to use an efficient method to separate natural products from S. chusanum by Medium-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (MPLC) and High-Speed Counter-Current Chromatography (HSCCC).Methods:In the present research, firstly, a sample (2.5 g) from the dichloromethane extract of S. chusanum was separated by MPLC. Next, fraction P5 was purified by HSCCC with a two-phase solvent system composed of hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (HEMWat) at a volume ratio of 2:4:1:4 (v/v/v/v). </P><P> Result: Four phenolic acids were obtained and their structures were identified by means of NMR and ESI-mass analysis. They were identified as: 1) protocatechuic acid (34 mg, purity 90.1%), 2) syringic acid (66 mg, purity 99.0%), 3) p-hydroxybenzoic acid (5 mg, purity 91.2%) and 4) vanillic acid (6 mg, purity 99.3%).Conclusion:The combination of MPLC and HSCCC is a high-efficiency separation method for natural products. This is the first report with regard to the separation of four phenolic acids in one step by MPLC and HSCCC from S. chusanum (L.) Ching.

Acanthosicyos horridus Welw. ex Hook. f. is a perennial shrub collected from the wild for its edible fruits and is also used as a traditional medicine. This study is aimed at evaluating the chemical properties and ethnomedicinal uses of A. horridus. Results of the current study are based on data derived from several online databases such as Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct, and pre-electronic sources such as scientific publications, books, dissertations, book chapters and journal articles. This study revealed that the fruit and root infusions and/or decoctions of A. horridus are used as traditional medicine for arteriosclerosis, chest pains, gastro-intestinal disorders, kidney problems, nausea and sexually transmitted infections. Phytochemical compounds identified from the species include cucurbitacins, fatty acids and sterols. Some of the compounds identified from the species have applications in food industry and health promoting products.

World over there is an immense demand for Traditional Medicine, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, natural products. The rampantly growing industry and interests of consumers have resulted in excessive demand of the botanical materials for manufacturing products. The major challenges herbal industries are facing relates to quality assurance, use of authenticated raw materials, conforming to the regulations, sourcing of botanicals, processing protocols and more. To meet the ever increasing demand, supply chain inturn bargains on the quality material which has a cascading effect on the quality of Traditional formulations. In the process, during shortfall, it is observed that alternatives/ substitutes and context based aberrations areidentified and supplied to fulfilthe demand. This has obviously affected the Quality Assurance of the traditional formulations and the credibility. The article is a revelation of a market study in southern India related to botanical trade w.r.t to the making of different commodities at regional levels. Here attempts to define the various commodities based on biological and non-biological factors is undertaken and examples shared.

The use of herbal drugs for the prevention and treatment of various health ailments has been in practice from time immemorial. Scientific validation and documentation of indigenous knowledge to work on patenting and research based on literature are necessary for the growth of Indian system of medicine. The Indian government has taken several initiatives for promotion and development of medicinal plants. Traditional medicine plays an inevitable role in drug discovery and development. Most of the therapeutically useful molecules used in the present day are inspired by traditional medicine. Several thrust areas of research need to be focused to develop scientifically validated data on their quality, safety and efficacy, to improve the consumer’s need of modern days. The products developed through validation will be of immense use for the betterment of healthcare and will help the industries to compete with their products to export to other counties. A paradigm shift is required for the promotion and development of traditional medicine, which can significantly convey the important task in economic growth. An attempt has been made through this article to highlight the major thrust areas and challenges in medicinal plant research and development.

This review discusses issues largely from the biological point of view about the targeted approaches for the use of natural products for the discovery of anti-diabetic drugs in collaboration with medicinal chemists and computer-aided drug design. A major thrust of this review reflects the collaborative research of four institutions: RMIT University (Australia), Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Australia), Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica of the Chinese Academy of Science (China) and Sun-Yat Sen University (China) in the past eight years. By joining forces of biomedical research in diabetes and medicinal chemistry with a focus on traditional medicine, they are trying to bridge the West (the latest research discoveries in biomedical research) with the East (traditional medicine) to step forward in drug discovery from natural products. Marine macroalgae occurring in the south eastern region of Victoria, Australia, consisting of Port Phillip Bay and the heads entering the bay, is the focus of this review. This area is home to approximately 200 different species of macroalgae, representing the three major phyla of the green algae (Chlorophyta), brown algae (Ochrophyta) and the red algae (Rhodophyta), respectively. Over almost 50 years, the species of macroalgae associated and occurring within this area have resulted in the identification of a number of different types of secondary metabolites including terpenoids, sterols/steroids, phenolic acids, phenols, lipids/polyenes, pheromones, xanthophylls and phloroglucinols. Many of these compounds have subsequently displayed a variety of bioactivities. A systematic description of the compound classes and their associated bioactivities from marine macroalgae found within this region is presented.

Wade Davis's study of Haitian “zombification” in the 1980s was a landmark in ethnobiological research. His research was an attempt to trace the origins of reports of “undead” Haitians, focusing on the preparation of the zombification poison. Starting with this influential ethnopharmacological research, this study examines advances in the pharmacology of natural products, focusing especially on those of animal-derived products. Ethnopharmacological, pharmacological, and chemical aspects are considered. We also update information on the animal species that reportedly constitute the zombie poison. Several components of the zombie powder are not unique to Haiti and are used as remedies in traditional medicine worldwide. This paper emphasizes the medicinal potential of products from zootherapy. These biological products are promising sources for the development of new drugs.
