To investigate the effect of the pure coal/rock strength on the mechanical behavior, failure behavior, and energy evolution of coal-rock combined (CRC) specimens, an AG-X250 Shimadzu Precision Universal Test was used to conduct uniaxial compressive loading, uniaxial cyclic loading, and unloading compression experiments on pure coal, pure rock, and different CRC specimens. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, and peak strain of the CRC specimen mainly depend on the coal specimen instead of the rock strength. The major failure modes of CRC were the shearing fracture and axial splitting failure, and for the CRC specimen with the same hard rock, the CRC specimen severely failed due to axial splitting cracks. In addition, the released elastic energy Ue, dissipated energy Ud, and kinetic energy Ur increase with increasing rock mass/coal strength, and for CRC specimen with the same coal, the greater the difference in strength between the rock and coal is, the greater the kinetic energy is.

The loading modes and roof lithology have a significant influence on the mechanical properties of coal seams. To reveal the failure modes and energy evolution law of underground coal during the mining process, conventional uniaxial and uniaxial cyclic loading tests were carried out on three types of samples: coal, rock, and coal-rock combinations. The results show that the samples mainly behave with three failure modes (shear slip, tensile splitting, and fracture), and all the coal sections in the coal-rock combinations fail, whereas most rock sections remain intact. The compressive strength of the coal-rock combination is higher than coal and much smaller than rock. Compared with the conventional uniaxial loading condition, both the maximum deformation before failure and Young’s modulus under the cyclic loading condition are greater, and the latter increases quadratically with the cycle index. The energy densities are also calculated, and their variations are analysed in detail. The results show that with increasing cycle index, both the elastic energy stored in the sample and the dissipated energy increase in a quadratic function, and the failure process becomes more intense. This research reveals the failure modes, deformation characteristics, and energy evolution of the coal-rock combination under different loading conditions, which can provide strong support for controlling underground surrounding rocks of the coal face and roadway in coalmines.

In this paper presents the effect of energy absorption on thin-walled aluminum cross-section square tubes wrapped with woven E-glass fiber laminated composite subjected to quasi-static axial compression. The compression test was carried out experimentally to examine the amount of energy can be absorbed as well as to observe for failure behavior for each specimens. The wall-thicknesses aluminum square of 1.9 mm was investigated and woven E-glass fiber laminate reinforced polyester resin was examined. Two different numbers of layers woven E-glass were investigated and examined. Result obtained from experimental analysis such that initial peak load, mean load, quasi-static absorbed energy against displacement curves were recoded and plotted then compared for each specimen profile. Results indicated that the tubes crashworthy structure was affected significantly by different number of layers wrapped on wall aluminum square profile and also that the effect of crushing behaviors and failure modes was discussed.

Abstract To explore the dynamic mechanical characteristics of coal-rock combined body (CRCB) load-bearing structures, impact tests were performed on CRCB specimens by using a separated Hopkinson pressure bar test device (SHPB) combined with an ultra-high-speed camera system. The propagation characteristics of stress wave , dynamic stress-strain relationship, energy evolution law, and distribution characteristics of CRCB crushed particles in the impact tests were analyzed. The obtained results showed that: with the increasing of impact velocity, the effect of the wave impedance difference between the CRCB specimens and incident bar on stress wave propagation is gradually weakened. The peak strength (sII) and peak strain of the CRCB had obvious strain-rate effects, the ratio of reflected energy decreases linearly. In addition, with increased impact velocity, the growth rate of the peak strength and ratio of absorbed energy gradually dropped, changing approximately as a power function. Macro-fractures of the CRCB mainly occurred at the coal or rock ends which is far away from the interface. When the stress at the crack tip is greater than the "weakened" coal or rock strength, the crack will continue to develop across the coal and rock interface. With the increasing of impact velocity and rock strength, the crushed coal particles gradually transform from massive to powdering, and the average size of crushed coal blocks decreases, which leads to a gradual increase in the fractal dimension of the CRCB specimens. Therefore, the monitoring and prevention of dynamic loads should be strengthened in the coal mines with thick and hard roofs.

A comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties of coal and rock sections is necessary for interpreting the deformation and failure modes of such underground sections and for evaluating the potential dynamic hazards. However, most studies have focused on horizontal coal–rock composites and the mechanical properties of inclined coal–rock composites have not been considered. To explore the influence of different confining pressures and inclined coal seam thicknesses on the mechanical properties and failure characteristics of rock–coal–rock (RCR) composites, a numerical model based on the particle flow code was used to perform simulations on five inclined RCR composites at different confining pressures. The results show that the mechanical properties and failure characteristics of the RCR composites are affected considerably by the inclined coal seam thickness and the confining pressure. (1) When the inclined coal seam thickness is constant, the elasticity modulus of the inclined RCR composite increases nonlinearly with the confining pressure at first, and then remains constant. At the same confining pressure, the elasticity modulus of the inclined RCR composite decreases nonlinearly with the inclined coal seam thickness. (2) When the confining pressure is constant, the peak stress of the inclined RCR composite decreases with the increase of the inclined coal seam thickness. When the inclined coal seam thickness is constant, the peak stress increases with the confining pressure. (3) As the inclined coal seam thickness increases, the peak strain of the inclined RCR composite first decreases rapidly, and then remains constant when there is no confining pressure. When the confining pressure is between 5 and 20 MPa, the peak strain of the inclined RCR composite gradually increases. (4) In the absence of confining pressure, there are few microcracks in the rock at an inclined coal seam thickness of 10 mm, whereas all the other cracks are in the coal section. When the confining pressure ranges between 5 and 20 MPa, the failure modes of the RCR composite can be divided into Y- and X-types.

AbstractPenetration and non-penetration lap laser welding is the joining method for assembling side facade panels of railway passenger cars, while their fatigue performances and the difference between them are not completely understood. In this study, the fatigue resistance and failure behavior of penetration 1.5+0.8-P and non-penetration 0.8+1.5-N laser welded lap joints prepared with 0.8 mm and 1.5 mm cold-rolled 301L plates were investigated. The weld beads showed a solidification microstructure of primary ferrite with good thermal cracking resistance, and their hardness was lower than that of the plates. The 1.5+0.8-P joint exhibited better fatigue resistance to low stress amplitudes, whereas the 0.8+1.5-N joint showed greater resistance to high stress amplitudes. The failure modes of 0.8+1.5-N and 1.5+0.8-P joints were 1.5 mm and 0.8 mm lower lap plate fracture, respectively, and the primary cracks were initiated at welding fusion lines on the lap surface. There were long plastic ribs on the penetration plate fracture, but not on the non-penetration plate fracture. The fatigue resistance stresses in the crack initiation area of the penetration and non-penetration plates calculated based on the mean fatigue limits are 408 MPa and 326 MPa, respectively, which can be used as reference stress for the fatigue design of the laser welded structures. The main reason for the difference in fatigue performance between the two laser welded joints was that the asymmetrical heating in the non-penetration plate thickness resulted in higher residual stress near the welding fusion line.

Experimental testing of deformed rebar anchors (DRAs) has not been performed extensively, so there is limited test data to understand their failure behavior. This study aims to expand upon these limited tests and understand the behavior of these anchors, when loaded in tension. Analytical benchmark models were created using available test data and a parametric study of deformed rebar anchors was performed. Anchor diameter, spacing, embedment, and number of anchors were varied for a total of 49 concrete breakout simulations. The different failure modes of anchors were predicted analytically, which showed that concrete breakout failure is prominent in the DRA groups. The predicted concrete breakout values were consistent with mean and 5% fractile concrete capacities determined from the ACI concrete capacity design (CCD) method. The 5% fractile factor determined empirically from the simulation results was kc = 26. This value corresponds closely with kc = 24 specified in ACI 318-19 and ACI 349-13 for cast-in place anchors. The analysis results show that the ACI CCD formula can be conservatively used to design DRAs loaded in tension by applying a kc factor no greater than 26.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evolve a guideline for scientists and development engineers to the failure behavior of electro-optical target tracker system (EOTTS) using fuzzy methodology leading to success of short-range homing guided missile (SRHGM) in which this critical subsystems is exploited. Design/methodology/approach – Technology index (TI) and fuzzy failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) are used to build an integrated framework to facilitate the system technology assessment and failure modes. Failure mode analysis is carried out for the system using data gathered from technical experts involved in design and realization of the EOTTS. In order to circumvent the limitations of the traditional failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA), fuzzy FMCEA is adopted for the prioritization of the risks. FMEA parameters – severity, occurrence and detection are fuzzifed with suitable membership functions. These membership functions are used to define failure modes. Open source linear programming solver is used to solve linear equations. Findings – It is found that EOTTS has the highest TI among the major technologies used in the SRHGM. Fuzzy risk priority numbers (FRPN) for all important failure modes of the EOTTS are calculated and the failure modes are ranked to arrive at important monitoring points during design and development of the weapon system. Originality/value – This paper integrates the use of TI, fuzzy logic and experts’ database with FMEA toward assisting the scientists and engineers while conducting failure mode and effect analysis to prioritize failures toward taking corrective measure during the design and development of EOTTS.

The dynamic failure characteristics of coal rock exposed to high temperatures were studied by using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. The relationship between energy and time history under different temperature conditions was obtained. The energy evolution and the failure modes of specimens were analyzed. Results are as follows: during the test, more than 60% of the incident energy was not involved in the breaking of the sample, while it was reflected back. With the increase of temperature, the reflected energy increased continuously; transmitted and absorbed energy showed an opposite variation. At the temperature of 25 to 100°C, the absorbed energy was less than that transmitted, while this phenomenon was opposite after 100°C. The values of specific energy absorption (SEA) were distributed at 0.04 to 0.1 J·cm−3, and its evolution with temperature could be divided into four different stages. Under different temperature conditions, the failure modes and the broken blocks of the samples were obviously different, combining with the variation of microstructure characteristics of coal at high temperatures; the physical mechanism of damage and failure patterns of coal rock are explained from the viewpoint of energy.

In this paper, a ring shaped numerical specimen is used to studying the failure process in brittle materials. The ring specimen is subjected to a compressive diametral load and contains two angled central cracks. Numerical modeling in this study is performed. It is shown that the obtained numerical results are in a very good agreement with the experiments. Effect of the crack orientation angle on the failure modes and loading-displace responses is discussed. In the range of 0°~40°, the fracture paths are curvilinear forms starting from the tip of pre-existing cracks and grow towards the loading points. For the crack orientation angle 90°, vertical fractures will split the specimen and the horizontal cracks do not influence the fracture process.

Abstract The stability of coal-rock composite structures is of great significance to coal mine safety production. To study the stability and deformation failure characteristics of the coal-rock composite structure, the uniaxial cyclic loading tests of the coal-rock composite structures with different coal-rock height ratios were carried out. Lithology and coal-rock height ratio play an important role in the energy dissipation of coal-rock composite structures. The higher the coal-rock height ratio, the greater the average elastic energy and dissipated energy produced per cycle of coal-rock composite structures, the smaller the total elastic energy and dissipated energy produced in the process of cyclic loading. Based on the difference of damage variables calculated by dissipative energy method and acoustic emission method, a more sensitive joint calculation method for calculating damage variable was proposed. The joint damage variable calculation method can more accurately and sensitively reflect the damage of coal-rock composite structure under cyclic loading. The macroscopic crack first appears in the coal specimen in the coal-rock composite structure, the degree of broken coal specimens in the composite structure is inversely proportional to the coal-rock height ratio. The strength and deformation characteristics of the coal-rock composite structure are mainly affected by coal sample in the composite structure.
