This study examines the impact of the addition of bio-ethanol/bio-ETBE on the main volatility properties of gasoline. Although several studies have been published on the addition of ethanol or ETBE to gasoline, the simultaneous addition of these oxygenates has not been studied by taking the maximum oxygen content of 3.7% m/m into account. The EN 228:2012-A1:2017 standard specifies the requirements for marketed unleaded gasoline. This standard is able to determine, among other things, a gasoline type with a maximum oxygen content of 3.7% m/m and sets the maximum limits for ethanol content at 10% v/v and 22% v/v for ethers with a minimum five carbon atoms, such as ΕΤΒΕ. Five refinery fractions were mixed in various proportions and were used as base fuels. A total of 30 samples were prepared by blending the base fuels with bio-ethanol/bio-ETBE. In each of these base fuels, bio-ethanol was added in concentrations up to 10% v/v. Subsequently, bio-ETBE was added to each of these fuels in concentrations up to 20.8% v/v for use as a stabilizer. All of the samples were examined using the EN ISO 13016-1 and EN ISO 3405 test methods while considering the volatility requirements set by EN 228. The results showed that the addition of bio-ETBE has a beneficial effect on the volatility characteristics of the samples, as it reduces the vapor pressure of the final blend and sets all fuels in compliance with the required specification limits set by the EN 228 standard.

Abstract Background Retigabine belongs to the novel generation of antiepileptic drugs but its complex mechanism of action causes that the drug might be effective in other diseases, for instance, alcohol dependence. It is known that ethanol abuse impaired the function of brain structures associated with memory and learning such as the hippocampus. In our previous study, retigabine reduced hippocampal changes induced by ethanol in the EEG rhythms in rabbits. This study is focused on the impact of retigabine on memory processes in male rats receiving alcohol. Methods Memory was evaluated in various experimental models: Morris water maze, Contextual, and Cued Fear Conditioning tests. Retigabine was administered for 3 weeks directly to the stomach via oral gavage at a dose of 10 mg/kg. Rats received also 20% ethanol (5 g/kg/day in two doses) via oral gavage for 3 weeks and had free access to 5% ethanol in the afternoon and at night. Morris water maze was performed after 1 and 3 weeks of ethanol administration and after 1 week from the discontinuation of ethanol administration. Contextual and Cued Fear Conditioning tests were carried out after 24 h and 72 h of alcohol discontinuation. Results The drug significantly decreased ethanol-induced memory disturbances during alcohol administration as well as slightly improved learning processes after the discontinuation of ethanol administration. Conclusions This beneficial effect of retigabine-ethanol interaction on memory may be a relevant element of the drug’s impact on the development of addiction.

Icing/snowing/frosting is ubiquitous in nature and industrial processes, and the accretion of ice mostly leads to catastrophic consequences. The existing understanding of icing is still limited, particularly for aircraft icing, where direct observation of the freezing dynamics is inaccessible. In this work, we investigate experimentally the impact and freezing of a water drop onto the supercooled substrate at extremely low vapor pressure, to mimic an aircraft passing through clouds at a relatively high altitude, engendering icing upon collisions with pendant drops. Special attention is focused on the ice coverage induced by an impinging drop, from the perimeter pointing outward along the radial direction. We observed two freezing regimes: (I) spread-recoil-freeze at the substrate temperature of Ts = −15.4 ± 0.2 °C and (II) spread (incomplete)-freeze at the substrate temperature of Ts = −22.1 ± 0.2 °C. The ice coverage is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the frozen drop itself, and counterintuitively, larger supercooling yields smaller ice coverage in the range of interest. We attribute the variation of ice coverage to the kinetics of vapor diffusion in the two regimes. This fundamental understanding benefits the design of new anti-icing technologies for aircraft.

AbstractWhile vaccination is the optimal response to an epidemic, recent events have obliged us to explore new strategies for containing worldwide epidemics, like lockdown strategies, where the contacts among the population are strongly reduced in order to slow down the propagation of the infection. By analyzing a classical epidemic model, we explore the impact of lockdown strategies on the evolution of an epidemic. We show that repeated lockdowns have a beneficial effect, reducing the final size of the infection, and that they represent a possible support strategy to vaccination policies.

Three weld metals with different oxygen contents were developed. The influence of oxygen contents on the microstructure and impact toughness of weld metal was investigated through high heat input welding tests. The results showed that a large number of fine inclusions were formed and distributed randomly in the weld metal with oxygen content of 500 ppm under the heat input condition of 341 kJ/cm. Substantial cross interlocked acicular ferritic grains were induced to generate in the vicinity of the inclusions, primarily leading to the high impact toughness at low temperature for the weld metal. With the increase of oxygen content, the number of fine inclusions distributed in the weld metal increased and the grain size of intragranular acicular ferrites decreased, which enhanced the impact toughness of the weld metal. Nevertheless, a further increase of oxygen content would contribute to a great diminution of the austenitic grain size. Following that the fraction of grain boundary and the start temperature of transformation increased, which facilitated the abundant formation of pro-eutectoid ferrites and resulted in a deteriorative impact toughness of the weld metal.

Background: The impact of current smoking on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) course has been studied extensively; smoking is deleterious in Crohn's disease (CD), and beneficial in ulcerative colitis (UC). Except for enteral nutrition, there are only limited data regarding the impact of diet on disease course. Key Messages: Current smoking worsens the course of CD, increasing the incidence of flares, the need for steroids, immunosuppressants and re-operations. Conversely, smoking cessation has a rapid beneficial effect on disease course, decreasing the risk of flares and of post-operative recurrences. From 3 months after the quit date, quitters have a disease course similar to that of never smokers. Achieving smoking cessation in CD is thus an important goal of therapy. On the contrary, smoking improves the course of UC and in particular, is associated with a decreased need for colectomy. Smoking cessation increases the risk of flare and the need for steroids or immunosuppressants. However, patients with UC should not be discouraged to quit, because the beneficial effect of smoking for their disease is counterbalanced by the deleterious systemic effects of tobacco. Among dietary interventions, only exclusive enteral nutrition was shown to induce remission and achieve mucosal healing in some patients with CD. The beneficial effect of liquid-defined diet is observed whatever be the type of administration (orally or by tube), the type of diet regarding protein and fat content and resulting alterations in the gut microbiota. In UC, enteral nutrition has no effect. Finally, popularized restrictive diets in IBD as the specific-carbohydrate diet and the gluten-free diet have not been rigorously tested. In a small trial, a semi-vegetarian diet was shown to be effective in maintaining remission over 2 years in CD. Conclusions: Patients with IBD should not smoke and avoid passive smoking. Aside from the defined liquid diets, there is no rationale for advising particular diets.

A study of the mechanical properties of the finished metal products was carried out. All types of metal products are subjected to continuous quality control, both on the production output at the manufacturer of billets, and on the production entrance at the consumer of metal. Control subject are: strength characteristics (tensile strength σв and yield stress σ02 and the characteristics of plasticity (relative elongation δ and relative necking ψ). The pipe steels have another important controlled characteristic: the impact toughness КСU-60. All the test methods are the destroying ones and are characterized by high complexity. The task of reducing the types of tests, the introduction of a comprehensive indicator of product quality is an urgent technical task. The purpose of this work is to study the regularities of changes in the indicators that determine the quality of the sheet metal from the pipe steel.

The beneficial effect of STF impregnation in enhancing the impact resistance of high-performance fabrics has been extensively reported in the literature. However, this research work reports that fabric structure has a decisive role in moderating the effectiveness of STF impregnation in terms of impact energy absorption. Plain woven fabrics having sett varying from 25 × 25 inch−1 to 55 × 55 inch−1 were impregnated with STF at two different padding pressures to obtain different add-ons. The impact energy absorption by STF impregnated loosely woven fabrics was found to be higher than that of their neat counterparts for both levels of add-on, while opposite trend was observed in case of tightly woven fabrics. Further, comparison of tightly woven plain, 2/2 twill, 3/1 twill and 2 × 2 matt fabrics revealed beneficial effect of STF impregnation, except for the plain woven fabric, establishing that there exists a fabric structure-STF impregnation interplay that tunes the impact resistance of woven fabrics.

In this paper, the test methods of radiation laboratory and data analysis in detail were introduced. The impact of the capillary system with different parameters changing, such as water temperature or water flow the capillary cooling capacity changes, and the capillary cooling system when the initial radiation response time were specificially studied. Under different parameters while cooling capillary volume changes associated with the indoor temperature can be seen under certain conditions, the capillary cooling capacity and room temperature has a linear relationship.

Increasing awareness of the impact of frailty on elderly people resulted in research focusing on factors that contribute to the development and persistence of frailty including nutrition and physical activity. Most effort so far has been spent on understanding the association between protein intake and the physical domain of frailty. Far less is known for other domains of frailty: cognition, mood, social health and comorbidity. Therefore, in the present narrative review, we elaborate on the evidence currently known on the association between protein and exercise as well as the broader concept of frailty. Most, but not all, identified studies concluded that low protein intake is associated with a higher prevalence and incidence of physical frailty. Far less is known on the broader concept of frailty. The few studies that do look into this association find a clear beneficial effect of physical activity but no conclusions regarding protein intake can be made yet. Similar, for other important aspects of frailty including mood, cognition, and comorbidity, the number of studies are limited and results are inconclusive. Future studies need to focus on the relation between dietary protein and the broader concept of frailty and should also consider the protein source, amount and timing.
