In this paper, we exclusively studied the effects of dry and wet pulverization of different wood flours on the fatigue performance of polypropylene (PP)/wood flour (WF) composites. Wood flours obtained from cypress and Scots pine trees were pulverized in both dry and wet conditions at two different mill-plate gaps, 200 µm and 350 µm, and were used as reinforcement in PP matrices. Master batches of PP with different types of pulverized WF were compounded before processing in an extruder. The PP/WF composites of initial WF were also prepared for comparison. The prepared composites were analyzed by tensile and fatigue tests. It was found that the tensile properties of wood/polypropylene composites were affected by the pulverization of WF. Fatigue test results displayed that wet pulverization of short cypress flour had a negative effect on the fatigue life of PP/WF composites, while wet pulverization of long cypress flour and pine flour had a positive effect on the fatigue life of PP/WF composites.

The reinforcement of asphalt layers with geosynthetics has been used for several decades, but proper evaluation of the influence of these materials on pavement fatigue life is still a challenging task. The presented study investigates a novel approach to the reinforcement of asphalt layers using a new type of geogrid composite, in which square or hexagonal polypropylene stiff monolithic paving grid with integral junctions is bonded to polypropylene non-woven paving fabric. The laboratory fatigue tests were performed on large asphalt concrete beams reinforced with the new type of geocomposite. Unreinforced samples were used as reference. Test results were analysed in several aspects, including the standardised approach based on stiffness reduction, but also using energy dissipation. The effect of reinforcement on pavement fatigue life was also estimated. Based on the obtained final results of fatigue life calculations, it can be concluded that the evaluated geogrid composites have an evident positive effect on pavement performance and have a significant potential to extend the overall pavement life, especially in the case of hexagonal grid.

AbstractThe steel structure under the action of alternating load for a long time is prone to fatigue failure and affects the safety of the engineering structure. For steel structures in complex environments such as corrosive media and fires, the remaining fatigue life is more difficult to predict theoretically. To this end, the article carried out fatigue tests on Q420qD high-performance steel cross joints under three different working conditions, established a 95% survival rate $$S{ - }N$$ S - N curves, and analyzed the effects of corrosive media and high fire temperatures on its fatigue performance. And refer to the current specifications to evaluate its fatigue performance. The results show that the fatigue performance of the cross joint connection is reduced under the influence of corrosive medium, and the fatigue performance of the cross joint connection is improved under the high temperature of fire. When the number of cycles is more than 200,000 times, the design curves of EN code, GBJ code, and GB code can better predict the fatigue life of cross joints without treatment, only corrosion treatment, and corrosion and fire treatment, and all have sufficient safety reserve.

Abstract The bonding state of the asphalt layers in a road pavement structure significantly affects its fatigue life. These bondings, therefore, require detailed tests and optimization. In this paper, the analyses of the correlation between the results of laboratory static tests and the results of fatigue tests of asphalt mixture interlayer bondings were performed. The existence of the relationships between selected parameters was confirmed. In the future, the results of these analyses may allow for assessment of interlayer bondings’ fatigue life based on the results of quick and relatively easy static tests.

AbstractIt has been argued that economic development and democracy create new opportunities and resources for women to access political power, which should increase gender equality in politics. However, empirical evidence from previous research that supports this argument is mixed. The contribution of this study is to expand the research on gender equality in politics through an in-depth examination of the effect of development and democracy on gender equality in cabinets. This has been completed through separate analyses that include most of the countries in the world across three levels of development (least-developed, developing, and developed) and across different types of political regimes (democracies, royal dictatorships, military dictatorships, and civilian dictatorships). The results demonstrate that economic development and democracy only affect gender equality in cabinets positively in a few environments. Accordingly, the context is important and there seem to be thresholds before development and democracy have any effect. Development has a positive effect in developed countries and in democracies, but it has a negative effect in dictatorships, and the negative effect is strongest in military dictatorships. The level of democracy has a positive effect mainly in dictatorships, and the strongest effect is in civilian dictatorships. The article demonstrates the importance of dividing samples into subsets to increase understanding of what affects women's representation in cabinets in different environments, and I ask scholars to subset samples and run separate analyses more often in comparative studies.

Pretensioned concrete beams are widely used as bridge girders for simply supported bridges. Understanding the fatigue behavior of such beams is very important for design and construction to prevent fatigue failure. The fatigue behavior of pretensioned concrete beams is mainly influenced by the fatigue of the prestressing strands. The evaluation of previous test results from the literature indicated a reduced fatigue life in the long-life region compared with current design methods and specifications. Therefore, nine additional high-cycle fatigue tests were conducted on pretensioned concrete beams with strand stress ranges of about 100 MPa (14.5 ksi). The test results confirmed that current design methods and specifications overestimate the fatigue life of embedded strands in pretensioned concrete beams.

The strain rates in actual transients of operating plants are not constant and changing momentarily. A large number of fatigue tests under stepwise strain rate changing conditions were performed to develop a method for evaluating fatigue life under varying strain rate conditions. Based on these test results, a strain base integral model known as the named the modified rate approach method was developed and verified. However it was reported recently that in the case of sine wave fatigue tests in BWR environment, the fatigue life was two to six times longer than the fatigue life predicted by the modified rate approach method. For this paper, in order to confirm whether the same tendency is observed in PWR environment, fatigue tests of sine wave were performed of SS316 in simulated PWR water environment. As the result, the difference of fatigue life by sine wave test reported in BWR environment was not observed between experimental and predicted life in PWR environment and the modified rate approach method was applicable under continuous strain rate changing condition.

The semi-circular bending (SCB) test is a recently developed test method, adopted by the American Society of Testing and Material (ASTM) as ASTM D8044, to evaluate the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. To measure the robustness of the SCB test, a ruggedness test is needed. In this study, the effect of small changes in the key parameters of the test method on the results of the test were numerically investigated. The test method has many variables and set up conditions. Examining all of these parameters would be cumbersome using traditional testing and statistical techniques, as they require a significantly high number of samples. The Plackett–Burman (PB) technique was used to conduct the ruggedness test while reducing the number of tests required. Seven parameters have been examined: notch location, notch depth (low, intermediate and high), air voids, loading rate, and span length. Even using the PB technique, 16 scenarios need to be tested, and each scenario requires three specimens, one for each of the three notch depths. Hence the process requires plenty of time and material. In this study, the SCB test was modeled using a discrete element method (DEM) approach to analyze the fracture behavior of the samples. DEM was used to develop a model that reduced the time and materials required for the SCB test. Results showed that the parameters with most positive effect were intermediate notch depth and notch location, while those with the most negative effect were loading rates and air voids.

The paper considers the effect of lubricant viscosity, ν, on the contact fatigue life, N, in gearing applications. More than 40 sets of the thermal non-Newtonian EHL numerical calculations and six sets of disc fatigue tests under the conditions ranging from the mixed to full film lubrication are used. The results show that for improving gearing fatigue life it is generally useful to increase lubricant viscosity. But it is not simply the case that the higher the lubricant viscosity, the better. When lubricant viscosity, ν, is less than a critical value, νcr, a quantitative relation of is seen in the test results; When ν > νcr, however, increasing lubricant viscosity is found to reduce the fatigue life. Based on this result, the paper raises questions concerning the accuracy of the lubrication factor recommended by ISO/6336:1996.

The objective of this study is to identify the most closely related variable to the distribution of fatigue life in unnotched and three kinds of notched 2024-T4 aluminum alloy specimens. Carefully designed fatigue tests under a constant temperature and humidity condition provided fatigue life distributions over a wide range of stress amplitude. This study used about 1000 specimens. On the basis of the test results, the dependence of the scatter in fatigue life on notch configuration, the period to crack initiation, the level of stress amplitude, the median fatigue life, and the slope of the median S-N curve is investigated, and the relationship between the distributional form of fatigue life and the shape of the median S-N curve is discussed. It is concluded that the slope and shape of the median S-N curve in the vicinity of the test stress level are closely related to the scatter and distributional form of fatigue life respectively. This is common to the unnotched and three kinds of notched specimens. A variability hypothesis to correlate the median S-N curve with fatigue life distributions is examined.

One of the main benefits advertised with the use of warm mix asphalt (WMA) is the decreasing aging of the asphalt binder resulting from the lower production temperature compared to conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA). Some tests were performed to determine the asphalt binder aging properties from WMA and HMA. Asphalt binders were recovered by extraction and distillation from asphalt mixtures premixed at different temperatures (140°C, 160°C, 180°C for HMA, 100°C and 120°C for WMA) in the mixing plant. Penetration@25°C, softening point (R&B) and rotational Brookfield viscosity tests were carried out. Results show that the aging of asphalt binder increases as the mixing temperature is elevated, and remarkably accelerates at the temperatures higher than 150°C. Warm mix asphalt (for example, mixing temperature at 100°Cor 120°C) can greatly reduce the aging of asphalt. Aging of the asphalt binder is one of the factors that would affect the mixture’s fatigue life. Four-point beam fatigue test samples were mixed and compacted at 140°C for HMA and 120°C for WMA, and fatigue tests with a frequency of 10 Hz and three constant strain levels (150 micro-strain, 300 micro-strain, 450 micro-strain, respectively) were performed. Results show that WMA’s fatigue life was higher than the control HMA, which indicates that it may reduce aging of asphalt binder and improve fatigue performance of asphalt mixture at lower production temperatures.
