Composite laminated materials have been largely implemented in advanced applications due to the high tailorability of their mechanical performance and low weight. However, due to their low resistance against out-of-plane loading, they are prone to generate damage as a consequence of an impact event, leading to the loss of mechanical properties and eventually to the catastrophic failure of the entire structure. In order to overcome this issue, the high tailorability can be exploited to replicate complex biological structures that are naturally optimised to withstand extreme impact loading. Bioinspired helicoidal laminates have been already studied in-depth with good results; however, they have been manufactured by applying a constant pitch rotation between each consecutive ply. This is in contrast to that observed in biological structures where the pitch rotation is not constant along the thickness, but gradually increases from the outer shell to the inner core in order to optimise energy absorption and stress distribution. Based on this concept, Functionally Graded Pitch (FGP) laminated composites were designed and manufactured in order to improve the impact resistance relative to a benchmark laminate, exploiting the tough nature of helicoidal structures with variable rotation angles. To the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to fully reproduce the helicoidal arrangement found in nature using a mathematically scaled form of the triangular sequence to define the lamination layup. Samples were subject to three-point bending and tested under Low Velocity Impact (LVI) conditions at 15 J and 25 J impact energies and ultrasonic testing was used to evaluate the damaged area. Flexural After Impact (FAI) tests were used to evaluate the post-impact residual energy to confirm the superior impact resistance offered by these bioinspired structures. Vast improvements in impact behaviour were observed in the FGP laminates over the benchmark, with an average reduction of 41% of the damaged area and an increase in post-impact residual energy of 111%. The absorbed energy was similarly reduced (−44%), and greater mechanical strength (+21%) and elastic energy capacity (+78%) were demonstrated in the three-point bending test.

In this paper, the post-impact shear strength of ICA surface mount (SM) joints was obtained experimentally and compared with that of SM lead-tin joints. The dynamic impact energy was provided in the form of three-point bending on the PCB using equipment called the split Hopkinson bar. Strain rates of over 4000/s were used for the impact bending test. The action of impact bending was used to simulate the effect on the PCB and the interconnection as a result of high energy impact on an electronic equipment. Shear test was then performed to examine the change in strength of the ICA joints as a result of impact damage. It was found that the SM ICA joints failed due to impact at a strain rate just over 4000/s. Microstructural examination carried out using a scanning electron microscope revealed that the interface between the ICA and copper pad on the PCB was the weakest region of the joint.

Abstract In this study, a series of in-plane hexagonal honeycombs with different Poisson's ratio induced by topological diversity are studied, considering re-entrant, semi-re-entrant and convex cells, respectively. The crushing strength of honeycomb in terms of Poisson's ratio is firstly presented. In the previous research, we have studied the compression performance of honeycomb with different negative Poisson's ratio. In this study, a comparative study on the local impact resistance of different sandwich panels is conducted by considering a spherical projectile with low to medium impact speed. Some critical criteria (i.e. local indentation profile, global deflection, impact force and energy absorption) are adopted to analyze the impact resistance. Finally, an influential mechanism of Poisson's ratio on the local impact resistance of sandwich panel is studied by considering the variation of core strength and post-impact collapse behavior.

This research paper deals with an investigation of the influence of honeycomb core compression on the mechanical properties of sandwich structures. These structures consist of prepreg facing layers and two different material types of honeycomb and are produced by modified compression molding called Crush-Core technology. Produced structures are mechanically tested in three-point bending test and subjected to low-velocity impact and Charpy impact test.

Low velocity drop weight impact testing of CPVC pipes was conducted on 160 mm long pipe sections obtained from 4-inch (100 mm) diameter schedule 80 pipes. Impact test were carried out for the base (as received) pipes and after their exposure to out door natural weathering conditions in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The results of the impact testing on the natural (outdoor exposure) broadly suggest that the natural outdoor exposures produce no change in the impact resistance of CPVC pipe material for the impact events carrying low incident energies of 10 and 20J. At the impact energies of 35 and 50J the natural outdoor exposures appear to cause appreciable degradation in the impact resistance of the CPVC pipe material. This degradation is noted only for the longer exposure periods of 12 and 18 months.

Composite structures are particularly vulnerable to impact, which drastically reduces their residual strength, in particular, at high temperatures. The glass-transition temperature (Tg) of a polymer is a critical factor that can modify the mechanical properties of the material, affecting its density, hardness and rigidity. In this work, the influence of thermal ageing on the low-velocity impact resistance and tolerance of composites is investigated by means of compression after impact (CAI) tests. Carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with a Tg of 195 °C were manufactured and subjected to thermal ageing treatments at 190 and 210 °C for 10 and 20 days. Drop-weight impact tests were carried out to determine the impact response of the different composite laminates. Compression after impact tests were performed in a non-standard CAI device in order to obtain the compression residual strength. Ultrasonic C-scanning of impacted samples were examined to assess the failure mechanisms of the different configurations as a function of temperature. It was observed that damage tolerance decreases as temperature increases. Nevertheless, a post-curing process was found at temperatures below the Tg that enhances the adhesion between matrix and fibres and improves the impact resistance. Finally, the results obtained demonstrate that temperature can cause significant changes to the impact behaviour of composites and must be taken to account when designing for structural applications.

In this paper, an alternative analysis strategy based on a Wavelet-Galerkin scheme specially tailored to solve impact problems of functionally graded orthotropic thin plates subjected to low-velocity impact is presented. The plate considered to be circular, is assumed to be clamped on its lateral edge and has internal supports of rigid, elastic and viscoelastic types. The material properties of the plate are represented in the form of exponential functions of the thickness coordinate. A rigid spherical indenter impacts the plate. The study is based on the classical lamination plate theory (CLT). An advanced contact law of the Hertzian type is adopted. A nonlinear Volterra integral equation system is obtained in the following unknown functions: the impact force and the dynamic reaction forces at the rigid, elastic and viscoelastic internal point supports. Numerical simulations displaying the contact force, the transversal displacement and the penetration depth are graphically presented, and pertinent conclusions regarding the implications of incorporation of graded material systems are outlined.

This study aims to compare the low-velocity impact and post-impact properties of intra-ply hybrid carbon/E-glass/polypropylene non-crimp thermoplastic composites with non-hybrid carbon/PP and E-glass/PP non-crimp thermoplastic composites. Impact test was performed at four energy levels as 15 J, 30 J, 45 J and 60 J. Post-impact properties of hybrid thermoplastic composites were tested by compression after impact method for each energy level to understand the impact damage tolerance of intra-ply hybrid carbon/E-glass/PP non-crimp thermoplastic composites. The effect of hybridization on energy absorption of composites was not significant, while C-scan results showed that the intra-ply hybrid non-crimp thermoplastic composites had smaller impact damage areas in comparison to the non-hybrid samples. Compression and compression after impact tests results confirmed that the intra-ply hybridization increased the toughness of the composite laminates. Also, the residual compression strength/modulus increased with hybridization which indicated to damage tolerance.

The dynamic response of functionally graded cellular structures subjected to impact of a finite mass was investigated in this paper. Compared to a cellular structure with a uniform cell size, the one with gradually changing cell sizes may improve many properties. Based on the two-dimensional random Voronoi technique, a two-dimensional topological configuration of cellular structures with a linear density-gradient in one direction was constructed by changing the cell sizes. The finite element method using ABAQUS/Explicit code was employed to investigate the energy absorption and the influence of gradient on stress wave propagation. Results show that functionally graded cellular structures studied are superior in energy absorption to the equivalent uniform cellular structures under low initial kinetic energy impacts, and the performance of such structures can be significantly improved when the density difference is enlarged. The stress levels at the impact and support ends may be reduced by introducing a gradual change of density in cellular structures when the initial impact velocity is low.
